Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists in many fields are now expressing considerable interest in non-linearity and the ideas of oscillations and chaos. Chemical reactions provide perfect examples of these phenomena, as oscillating reactions, explosions, ignition, travelling waves, patterns, quasiperiodicity, and chaosare all features of chemical kinetics. Now available in paperback, this book introduces non-linear phenomena in chemical kinetics using simple model schemes. These models involve chemical feedback, such as chain branching, autocatalysis, and self-heating. The emphasis is on physical and pictorial representation, and on identifying thosegross features which are essential. The experimental conditions under which such behaviour will occur can be predicted using simple mathematical recipes, and these are also included. The first part of the book begins with a discussion of long-lived oscillations for autocatalytic or exothermic reactions in closed vessels. Stationary states, bistability, and oscillations in continuous flow reactors and diffusion cells are then considered. This is followed by chemical wavepropagation and by pattern selection and oscillations. Complex oscillations, quasiperiodicity, and chemical chaos, either forced or spontaneous, are introduced. Part 2 deals with real experimental systems, describing observed experimental behaviour and its interpretation in terms of the underlyingchemical mechanisms or simplified models. The Belousov-Zhabotinskii reactions is discussed in some detail as the most extensively studied system, and the behaviour of important gas phase reactions is presented.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprises seven chapters. The first chapter addresses a phenomenological approach to the concept 'reaction rate', which views the complex reaction as a single unit whose progress if judged from measurements of the formation rates of the reaction participants; it also sets forth the main strategies by which to determine the rates of heterogeneous catalytic reactions. Another approach, a mechanistic one, relying upon the reaction mechanisms considered in the second chapter that has recourse to the Horiuti-Temkin complex reaction kinetics theory and the elementary statement of the graph method application in chemical kinetics. The third, fourth and fifth chapters consistently expound the philosophy of the steady state multiplicity, auto-oscillations, and the reciprocal effect of competitive catalytic reactions. The sixth and seventh chapters concentrate on the kinetics of some pragmatically important heterogeneous and heterogeneous-homogeneous catalytic reactions. Most results, presented in these chapters were obtained in the authors' laboratories.

Book excerpt: In recent years considerable interest has developed in the mathe matical analysis of chemically reacting systems both in the absence and in the presence of diffusion. Earlier work has been limited to simple problems amenable to closed form solutions, but now the computer permits the numerical solution of complex systems of nonlinear differ ential equations. The numerical approach provides quantitative infor mation, but for practical reasons it must be limited to a rather narrow range of the parameters of the problem. Consequently, it is desirable to obtain broader qualitative information about the solutions by in vestigating from a more fundamental mathematical point of view the structure of the differential equations. This theoretical approach can actually complement and guide the computational approach by narrow ing down trial and error procedures, pinpointing singularities and suggesting methods for handling them. The study of the structure of the differential equations may also clarify some physical principles and suggest new experiments. A serious limitation ofthe theoretical approach is that many of the results obtained, such as the sufficient conditions for the stability of the steady state, turn out to be very conservative. Thus the theoretical and computational approaches are best used to gether for the purpose of understanding, designing, and controlling chemically reacting systems. The present monograph is intended as a contribution to the theory of the differential equations describing chemically reacting systems.

Book excerpt: Chemical Kinetics relates to the rates of chemical reactions and factors such as concentration and temperature, which affects the rates of chemical reactions. Such studies are important in providing essential evidence as to the mechanisms of chemical processes. The book is designed to help the reader, particularly students and researchers of physical science, understand the chemical kinetics mechanics and chemical reactions. The selection of topics addressed and the examples, tables and graphs used to illustrate them are governed, to a large extent, by the fact that this book is aimed primarily at physical science (mainly chemistry) technologists. Undoubtedly, this book contains "must read" materials for students, engineers, and researchers working in the chemistry and chemical kinetics area. This book provides valuable insight into the mechanisms and chemical reactions. It is written in concise, self-explanatory and informative manner by a world class scientists in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty years ago, a new approach to reaction kinetics began to emerge: one based on mathematical models of reaction kinetics, or formal reaction kinetics. Since then, there has been a rapid and accelerated development in both deterministic and stochastic kinetics, primarily because mathematicians studying differential equations and algebraic geometry have taken an interest in the nonlinear differential equations of kinetics, which are relatively simple, yet capable of depicting complex behavior such as oscillation, chaos, and pattern formation. The development of stochastic models was triggered by the fact that novel methods made it possible to measure molecules individually. Now it is high time to make the results of the last half-century available to a larger audience: students of chemistry, chemical engineering and biochemistry, not to mention applied mathematics. Based on recent papers, this book presents the most important concepts and results, together with a wealth of solved exercises. The book is accompanied by the authors’ Mathematica package, ReactionKinetics, which helps both students and scholars in their everyday work, and which can be downloaded from http://extras.springer.com/ and also from the authors’ websites. Further, the large set of unsolved problems provided may serve as a springboard for individual research.

Book excerpt: This book demonstrates scientific computing by presenting twelve computational projects in several disciplines including Fluid Mechanics, Thermal Science, Computer Aided Design, Signal Processing and more. Each follows typical steps of scientific computing, from physical and mathematical description, to numerical formulation and programming and critical discussion of results. The text teaches practical methods not usually available in basic textbooks: numerical checking of accuracy, choice of boundary conditions, effective solving of linear systems, comparison to exact solutions and more. The final section of each project contains the solutions to proposed exercises and guides the reader in using the MATLAB scripts available online.

The usual phase plots of linear and nonlinear dynamical systems are also distinctly different, even before damping or forcing terms are added. It is also shown that the usual phase plot allows for the visualization of unobservable information that is present in the times series. The higher-order phase plots give yet additional information that is not present in the existing methods of plotting the data. Higher-order phase plots were originated and applied for the first time to a dynamical system (Morse oscillator) for the purpose of earlier detection of nonlinear effects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book on Advanced Chemical Kinetics gives insight into different aspects of chemical reactions both at the bulk and nanoscale level and covers topics from basic to high class. This book has been divided into three sections: (i) "Kinetics Modeling and Mechanism," (ii) "Kinetics of Nanomaterials," and (iii) "Kinetics Techniques." The first section consists of six chapters with a variety of topics like activation energy and complexity of chemical reactions; the measurement of reaction routes; mathematical modeling analysis and simulation of enzyme kinetics; mechanisms of homogeneous charge compression ignition combustion for the fuels; photophysical processes and photochemical changes; the mechanism of hydroxyl radical, hydrate electron, and hydrogen atom; and acceptorless alcohol dehydrogenation. The understanding of the kinetics of nanomaterials, to bridge the knowledge gap, is presented in the second section. The third section highlights an overview of experimental techniques used to study the mechanism of reactions.
