Abstract: For the past twenty years, more and more attention has been drawn to the "performance-based design" of structures due to the concerns of earthquakes, dynamic impact, wind loads and so on. As a result, the ductility of a building has become an important aspect on par with its strength. As far as construction material is concerned, concrete structures have been the most prevalent in these years. As a matter of fact, the ductility of concrete structures is inferior to that of steel structures. However, recent studies have proved that the confinement effect will improve the strength and the ductility of concrete. In traditional concrete construction, confinement is provided by transverse steel hoops placed inside the concrete members with certain spacings, i.e. discontinuously. New forms of concrete structures, such as concrete columns confined by fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) and concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns, are therefore proposed to enhance the efficiency of confinement, since the concrete in these structures is confined continuously. The mechanisms of uniform and isotropic confinement effect in FRP-confined concrete columns and CFST columns have been well studied, and the existing theoretical models can be applied to those typical load cases, such as FRP-confined circular concrete columns and circular CFST columns under axial compression. But the research on the mechanisms of non-uniform and anisotropic confinement effect is still evolving, in order to predict the behaviour of confined concrete columns with sections of various shapes under combined axial loads and bending moments. Usually finite element (FE) method is used to analyse such complicated problems. However, in a lot of current studies using FE method, the dilation angle of plastic flow of concrete is often treated as a constant, which does not reflect the observed behaviour of concrete regarding the variation of volumetric strain under triaxial compression. In reality, the volume of concrete will eventually expand due to the propagation of splitting cracks, and the true dilatancy of concrete should be non-linear. In this study, a new FE model is developed through Fortran 90 to account for the nonlinearity of the dilatancy of concrete, and verified against several load cases with non-uniform and anisotropic confinement effect, i.e. eccentrically loaded FRP-confined circular concrete columns, axially loaded FRP-confined rectangular concrete columns and eccentrically loaded CFST columns. Moreover, a simplified method is also proposed to provide quick estimations on the behaviour of circular CFST columns under eccentric compression. Subjects: Columns, Concrete - Testing

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of concrete columns using unconfined concrete models is a well established practice. On the other hand, prediction of the actual ultimate capacity of confined concrete columns requires specialized nonlinear analysis. Modern codes and standards are introducing the need to perform extreme event analysis. There has been a number of studies that focused on the analysis and testing of concentric columns or cylinders. This case has the highest confinement utilization since the entire section is under confined compression. On the other hand, the augmentation of compressive strength and ductility due to full axial confinement is not applicable to pure bending and combined bending and axial load cases simply because the area of effective confined concrete in compression is reduced. The higher eccentricity causes smaller confined concrete region in compression yielding smaller increase in strength and ductility of concrete. Accordingly, the ultimate confined strength is gradually reduced from the fully confined value f[subscript]c[subscript]c (at zero eccentricity) to the unconfined value f[same as f1][subscript]c (at infinite eccentricity) as a function of the compression area to total area ratio. The higher the eccentricity the smaller the confined concrete compression zone. This paradigm is used to implement adaptive eccentric model utilizing the well known Mander Model and Lam and Teng Model. Generalization of the moment of area approach is utilized based on proportional loading, finite layer procedure and the secant stiffness approach, in an iterative incremental numerical model to achieve equilibrium points of P-[epsilon] and M-j response up to failure. This numerical analysis is adaptod to asses the confining effect in circular cross sectional columns confined with FRP and conventional lateral steel together; concrete filled steel tube (CFST) circular columns and rectangular columns confined with conventional lateral steel. This model is validated against experimental data found in literature. The comparison shows good correlation. Finally computer software is developed based on the non-linear numerical analysis. The software is equipped with an elegant graphics interface that assimilates input data, detail drawings, capacity diagrams and demand point mapping in a single sheet. Options for preliminary design, section and reinforcement selection are seamlessly integrated as well. The software generates 2D interaction diagrams for circular columns, 3D failure surface for rectangular columns and allows the user to determine the 2D interaction diagrams for any angle [alpha] between the x-axis and the resultant moment. Improvements to KDOT Bridge Design Manual using this software with reference to AASHTO LRFD are made. This study is limited to stub columns.

Book excerpt: Recent applications in reinforced concrete columns, including strengthening and extreme loading events, necessitate the development of specialized nonlinear analysis methods to predict the confined interaction domain of axial force, shear, and bending moment in square and slightly rectangular concrete columns. Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) materials are commonly used in strengthening applications due to their superior properties such as high strength-to-weight ratio, high energy absorption and excellent corrosion resistance. FRP wrapping of concrete columns is done to enhance the ultimate strength due to the confinement effect, which is normally induced by steel ties. The existence of the two confinement systems changes the nature of the problem. Existing research focused on a single confinement system. Also, very limited research on rectangular sections was found in the literature. In this research, a model to estimate the combined behavior of the two systems in rectangular columns is proposed. The calculation of the effective lateral pressure is based on Lam and Teng model and Mander model for FRP wraps and steel ties, respectively. The proposed model introduces load eccentricity as a parameter that affects the compression zone size, and in turn the level of confinement engagement. Full confinement corresponds to zero eccentricity, while unconfined behavior corresponds to infinite eccentricity. The model then generates curves for eccentricities within these boundaries. The numerical approach developed has then been extended to account for shear interaction using the simplified modified compression field theory adopted by AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications 2014. Comparisons were then performed against experimental data and Response-2000, an analytical analysis tool based on AASHTO 1999 in order to validate the interaction domain generated. Finally, the developed models were implemented in the confined analysis software "KDOT Column Expert" to add FRP confinement effect and shear interaction.

Book excerpt: In recent years confinement requirements for concrete columns have increased in seismic regions. Steel jackets are one way to confine reinforced concrete columns. The increased confinement provides additional strength and ductility for the columns during seismic events. For reinforced concrete columns with steel jackets, there are different section properties in the jacketed and non-jacketed regions. The variation can cause difficulties modeling the seismic response of these columns. A plastic hinge integration method, derived from the modified two-point Gauss-Radau quadrature rule, is used to model steel jacketed columns with force-based finite elements. This integration method allows for the specification of the plastic hinge length in the element, thereby confining the spread of material nonlinear response to selected regions. Controlling the location of material nonlinear response provides an objective numerical solution for strain-softening behavior that occurs due to the crushing of concrete. In addition, different material properties can be specified for the jacketed and non-jacketed regions, which allows for only one frame element to be used in modeling. This integration method is verified for elements with different material properties using a single force-based beam-column element. After the verification, the integration method is validated against experimental data from tests of steel jacketed reinforced concrete bridge columns conducted at the University of California at San Diego. The results of this research will be incorporated in pushover analysis software, developed at Oregon State University, for Alaska-style bridge bents.

Book excerpt: To satisfy the aims of performance based design, levels of damage which interrupt the serviceability of the structure or require more invasive repair techniques must be related to engineering criteria. In this report, the influence of displacement history on performance limit states, the relationship between strain and displacement, and the spread of plasticity in reinforced concrete structures is explored. An experimental study is underway to assess the performance of thirty circular, well-confined, bridge columns with varying lateral displacement history, transverse reinforcement detailing, axial load, aspect ratio, and longitudinal steel content. Eight of these columns, with similar geometry and detailing, were subjected to various unidirectional displacement histories including standardized laboratory cyclic loading and recreations of the displacement responses obtained from non-linear time history analysis of multiple earthquakes with distinct characteristics. Longitudinal reinforcing bars were instrumented to obtain strain hysteresis, vertical strain profiles, cross section curvatures, curvature distributions, and fixed-end rotations attributable to strain penetration. Results indicate that bar buckling was influenced by load history, but the relationship between strain and displacement along the envelope curve was not. The main impact of load history on bar buckling is its influence on accumulated strains within the longitudinal reinforcement and transverse steel.

Book excerpt: "This study details the development and implementation of a finite element model within a commercial finite element code, Abaqus CAE, for the analysis of reinforced concrete (RC) bridge columns containing interlocking spirals subjected to combined loading conditions including axial, shear, bending, and torsional loads, including the post-peak response. The model is a first of its kind attempt at simulating the response of RC columns with continuous spiral transverse reinforcement and subjected to combined loading conditions including torsion. The model is utilized to determine the quasi-static load-deformation response under various proportions of the input loads and displacements. The resulting quasi-static load-deformations, i.e., 'backbone' relationships, are compared to those experimentally obtained for three 1/2-scale prototype RC bridge columns subjected to constant axial loading and slow reversed cyclic lateral loading resulting in combined flexural moment, shear, and torsional moment. It was determined that such models can simulate the behavior of such columns with a reasonable level of error for unidirectional loading, but accurate torsional response and numerical stability of such models is difficult to obtain due to convergence errors resulting from a combination of inelastic material models and multi-body constraints used to couple the motion of the column's constituent pieces together. Attempts were made to extend the finite element model to similar RC bridge columns repaired and strengthened with externally bonded fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite jackets, however such attempts resulted in convergence failure as the model approached inelastic behavior"--Abstract, page iii.
