Book excerpt: The availability of computers has, in real terms, moved forward the practice of structural engineering. Where it was once enough to have any analysis given a complex configuration, the profession today is much more demanding. How engineers should be more demanding is the subject of this book. In terms of the theory of structures, the importance of geometric nonlinearities is explained by the theorem which states that "In the presence of prestress, geometric nonlinearities are of the same order of magnitude as linear elastic effects in structures. " This theorem implies that in most cases (in all cases of incremental analysis) geometric nonlinearities should be considered. And it is well known that problems of buckling, cable nets, fabric structures, ... REQUIRE the inclusion of geometric nonlinearities. What is offered in the book which follows is a unified approach (for both discrete and continuous systems) to geometric nonlinearities which incidentally does not require a discussion of large strain. What makes this all work is perturbation theory. Let the equations of equilibrium for a system be written as where P represents the applied loads, F represents the member forces or stresses, and N represents the operator which describes system equilibrium.

Book excerpt: Finite element thermal-structural analyses of cable-stiffened space structures are presented. A computational scheme for calculation of prestresses in the cable-stiffened structures is also described. The determination of thermal loads on orbiting space structures due to environmental heating is described briefly. Three finite element structural analysis techniques are presented for the analysis of prestressed structures. Linear, stress stiffening and large displacement analysis techniques are investigated. The three techniques are employed for analysis of prestressed cable structures at different prestress levels. The analyses produce similar results at small prestress but at higher prestress, differences between the results become significant. For the cable-stiffened structures studied, the linear analysis technique may not provide acceptable results. The stress stiffening analysis technique may yield results of acceptable accuracy depending on the prestress. The large displacement analysis technique produces accurate results over a wide range of prestresses and is recommended as a general analysis technique for thermal-structural analysis of cable-stiffened space structures.

Book excerpt: Nonlinear Analysis of Structures presents a complete evaluation of the nonlinear static and dynamic behavior of beams, rods, plates, trusses, frames, mechanisms, stiffened structures, sandwich plates, and shells. These elements are important components in a wide variety of structures and vehicles such as spacecraft and missiles, underwater vessels and structures, and modern housing. Today's engineers and designers must understand these elements and their behavior when they are subjected to various types of loads. Coverage includes the various types of nonlinearities, stress-strain relations and the development of nonlinear governing equations derived from nonlinear elastic theory. This complete guide includes both mathematical treatment and real-world applications, with a wealth of problems and examples to support the text. Special topics include a useful and informative chapter on nonlinear analysis of composite structures, and another on recent developments in symbolic computation. Designed for both self-study and classroom instruction, Nonlinear Analysis of Structures is also an authoritative reference for practicing engineers and scientists. One of the world's leaders in the study of nonlinear structural analysis, Professor Sathyamoorthy has made significant research contributions to the field of nonlinear mechanics for twenty-seven years. His foremost contribution to date has been the development of a unique transverse shear deformation theory for plates undergoing large amplitude vibrations and the examination of multiple mode solutions for plates. In addition to his notable research, Professor Sathyamoorthy has also developed and taught courses in the field at universities in India, Canada, and the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The commercial operation of the bullet train in 1964 in Japan marked the beginning of a new era for high-speed railways. Because of the huge amount of kinetic energy carried at high speeds, a train may interact significantly with the bridge and even resonate with it under certain circumstances. Equally important is the riding comfort of the train cars, which relates closely to the maneuverability of the train during its passage over the bridge at high speeds. This book is unique in that it is devoted entirely to the interaction between the supporting bridges and moving trains, the so-called vehicle-bridge interaction (VBI). Finite element procedures have been developed to treat interaction problems of various complexities, while the analytical solutions established for some typical problems are helpful for identifying the key parameters involved. Besides, some field tests were conducted to verify the theories established. This book provides an up-to-date coverage of research conducted on various aspects of the VBI problems. Using the series of VBI elements derived, the authors study a number of frontier problems, including the impact response of bridges with elastic bearings, the dynamic response of curved beam to moving centrifugal forces, the stability and derailment of trains moving over bridges shaken by earthquakes, the impact response of two trains crossing on a bridge, the steady-state response of trains moving over elevated bridges, and so on.

Book excerpt: Recent years have witnessed an increased need for applying nonlinear analysis in the assessment and design of civil engineering structures, particularly for structures subject to extreme loading. Nonlinear Structural Analysis for Engineers looks at how nonlinear analysis can be applied to a variety of different structures, including frames, plates and shells, whole buildings, and cable/membrane structures. The examples develop from simple models to detailed ones, based on finite element discretisation, focussing on the underlying methods/formulations. It illustrates real problems, through the use of the advanced nonlinear structural analysis program ADAPTIC, developed by the author. Suitable for students on undergraduate and post-graduate engineering courses, Nonlinear Structural Analysis for Engineers focuses on examples from civil engineering. Using simplified models, it demonstrates nonlinear structural analysis with emphasis on explicit cause and effect. This book is also an essential reference for researchers and practising engineers.

Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2013 in the subject Engineering - Civil Engineering, grade: -, University of Weimar, course: Cable Stayed Bridges, language: English, abstract: In this research, many models of a cable stayed bridge were generated using ABAQUS finite element commercial software for the purpose of proceeding with nonlinear design optimization on the shape and topology of the structure. The cable stayed bridge models in all cases are with a constant length and width for the deck, also the pylons height under and above the deck is constant, but the shape of stay cables arrangement varies to three main famous arrangements which are Fan, Semi harp and Harp.In addition to change in the pylons shape which are three known shapes Double out, Single Center and Single inclined out, and it is worthy to mention that in all cases of the shape optimization of the pylons , the stay cables arrangements are Fan style, andby governing computational nonlinear optimization process on the finite element models in all cases of shape and topology optimization through using static general step for analysis and a certain meshing type with global seeding size for the Beam elements, with a fixed and pinned boundary conditions for the deck supports and fixed boundary for the pylons.Concentrated static loads assigned on the same positions on the deck for all models cases. A numerical optimization and graphical simulation of the results were used to determine many responsesin the model cases which areReactions, Deflections and Mises stresses in the structural models of the cable stayed bridge, especially at the deck, pylons and the stay cables which are the main components of the structure, also the same step in the deck and pylons supportshas been done for optimization outputs. It is apparent and clear that the cable stayed model with the Fan arrangement of the stay cables showed efficiency and the best topological model case for the structural design optimization that involved a safe, robust, rigid, and safe for the design of cable stayed bridges. The pylon shape with double out case was the best design situation compared with the other two models single center and single inclined out shapes, this point was obvious in the reactions, deflections and Mises stresses for the deck supports and the deck itself, and as a result the Double out with a Fan shape arrangement of the cable stays is the best model for the design of cable stayed bridges to resist the static loads.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents the formulation and validation of a new 3d mixed cable element that is based on a two-field variational formulation and is suitable for the nonlinear static and dynamic analysis of cable structures. The new cable element is derived in general curvilinear coordinates under finite deformations, and identifies conjugate strain and stress measures for the nonlinear catenary problem. The formulation uses the weak form of the strain-displacement relation and the principle of virtual work to propose two numerical implementations of the element, one with a continuous axial force distribution and one with a discontinuous one. This dissertation also proposes a new filtered energy-momentum conserving algorithm for obtaining the dynamic response of cable structures in time. This new algorithm exactly conserves the Hamiltonian structure of the two-field mixed catenary problem for any {non\-linear} elastic complementary energy, and provides a consistent time integration in the case of inelastic material response. A postprocessing Savitzky-Golay filter is included to address the high-frequency contributions that appear in cables with a large sag-to-span ratio, without jeopardizing the desired conserving properties. The new element and the consistent time integration scheme are first validated under nonlinear elastic material response with several benchmark problems from the literature. In these examples, the mixed cable element obtains very accurate results for coarse meshes, and displays especially accurate axial force distributions compared to other models. For cables with a small sag-to-span ratio, the energy-conserving scheme and the Newmark method yield nearly identical results, while in the case of cables with a large sag-to-span ratio, for which the Newmark time integrator diverges, the new scheme gives accurate results and exactly conserves the total energy of the system. The proposed formulations are also validated under viscoelastic material response. In the case of small viscoelastic strains, the new element behaves robustly and gives excellent results. A new finite viscoelastic material model is formulated for large viscoelastic strains, and results show that it reduces to the infinitesimal model when small deformations are considered. Simple benchmark problems involving the free vibration and the earthquake response of simply-supported cables demonstrate that small relaxation times can reproduce the internal physical mechanisms that dissipate the high-frequency waves in the axial force field, while long relaxation times account for the decay of the dynamic response. The study concludes with the structural analysis of three-dimensional cable nets using the proposed 3d mixed cable elements. First, numerical joints are introduced to accommodate the discontinuities in the axial force field that appear in physical cable joints. These complex structures show excellent results for displacements and axial forces. For available experimental results, the proposed formulations give the smallest relative error compared to other models in the literature.
