Book excerpt: This book is addressed primarily to civil engineers familiar with such traditional topics as strength of materials, soil mechanics, and theory of elasticity and structures, but less familiar with the modern development of the mathematical theory of soil plasticity necessary to any engineer working under the general heading of nonlinear analysis of soil-structure system. This book will satisfy his needs in the case of the soil medium. It introduces the reader to the theory of soil plasticity and its numerical implementation into computer programs. The theory and method of computer implementation presented here are appropriate for solving nonlinear static dynamic problems in soil mechanics and are applicable for finite difference and finite element computer codes. A sample computer model subroutine is developed and this is used to study some typical soil mechanics problems. With its comprehensive coverage and simple, concise presentation, the book will undoubtedly prove to be very useful for consulting engineers, research and graduate students in geotechnical engineering.

Book Synopsis Limit Analysis in Soil Mechanics by : W.F. Chen
Download or read book Limit Analysis in Soil Mechanics written by W.F. Chen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last ten years, our understanding of the perfect plasticity and the associated flow rule assumption on which limit analysis is based has increased considerably. Many extensions and advances have been made in applications of limit analysis to the area of soil dynamics, in particular, to earthquake-induced slope failure and landslide problems and to earthquake-induced lateral earth pressures on rigid retaining structures. The purpose of the book therefore is in part to discuss the validity of the upper bound work (or energy) method of limit analysis in a form that can be appreciated by a practicing soil engineer, and in part to provide a compact and up-to-date summary of recent advances in the applications of limit analysis to earthquake-induced stability problems in soil mechanics.

Book Synopsis Structural Dynamics and Static Nonlinear Analysis From Theory to Application by : Belgasmia, Mourad
Download or read book Structural Dynamics and Static Nonlinear Analysis From Theory to Application written by Belgasmia, Mourad and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-01-29 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Static analysis is a special case of dynamic analysis. The main reason for using static or pseudo-static analysis is the simplicity of the design and the analysis itself. Many structures such as buildings, bridges, dams, ships, airplanes, and more are studied by a dynamic analysis, which is a more complicated and time-consuming analysis compared to a static one; such structures studied in this way are safer and their behavior is closer to reality. Thanks to the important evolution of computer science, numerical methods, and mathematical models, we are boldly confronting the analysis of the most complex structures with huge dimensions, all this in a few hours in order to have an exact behavior of these structures closer to reality through the use of static dynamics and analysis. Structural Dynamics and Static Nonlinear Analysis From Theory to Application is concerned with the challenging subject of structural dynamics and the hydrodynamic principle as well as nonlinear static methods of analysis for seismic design of structures. The chapters are arranged into three parts. The first deals with single-degree of freedom (DOF) systems. The second part concerns systems with multiple degrees of freedom (DOF) with which one can create analytical and mathematical models of the most complex structures, passing through the hydrodynamic principle with an application in real cases. The last part sheds light on the principle of nonlinear static methods and its application in a real case. This book is ideal for academics, researchers, practicing structural engineers, and research students in the fields of civil and/or mechanical engineering along with practitioners interested in structural dynamics, static dynamics and analysis, and real-life applications.

Book Synopsis Consolidation Analyses of Soils by : Jian-Hua Yin
Download or read book Consolidation Analyses of Soils written by Jian-Hua Yin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-12-28 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When stresses are applied to saturated soil, deformation will occur as water in voids is squeezed out. Consolidation Analyses of Soils focuses on the consolidation of fully saturated soils. The book follows a classic approach by beginning with one-dimensional constitutive relations of soils and one-dimensional consolidation. It then moves on to analytical solutions to several one-dimensional consolidation problems and one-dimensional finite strain consolidation. The authors also present a finite element method for consolidation analysis of one-dimensional problems, analytical solutions to consolidation of soil with vertical drains, and a finite difference method for consolidation analysis of one-dimensional problems. Simplified methods for consolidation analysis of soils exhibiting creep are introduced and applied to different cases. Three-dimensional consolidation equations and solutions of typical three-dimensional consolidation problems are covered, as well as simplified finite element consolidation analysis of soils with vertical drain and finite element method for three-dimensional consolidation problems. The book is unique in that it covers both classic solutions and state-of-the-art work in consolidation analyses of soils. Authors Jian-Hua Yin is Chair Professor of Soil Mechanics in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Guofu Zhu is a Professor in the Department of Engineering Structures and Mechanics at Wuhan University of Technology, China.

Book Synopsis Damage Assessment and Reconstruction after War or Natural Disaster by : Adnan Ibrahimbegovic
Download or read book Damage Assessment and Reconstruction after War or Natural Disaster written by Adnan Ibrahimbegovic and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-05-14 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1.1. SAFETY OF CIVIL STRUCTURES Society expects that the failure of civil structures is extremely rare and relies on the care and expertise of the professionals involved in the design, construction and maintenance of structures. This is in particular true for public technical systems such as transportation or energy supply systems and structures such as bridges. Structural safety may be defined as follows: “Adequate safety with respect to a hazard is ensured provided that the hazard is kept under control by appropriate measures or the risk is limited to an acceptable value. Absolute safety is not achievable.” It is thus not the structure as such that is designated safe but rather the people, goods and the environment in its surroundings. The continued use of existing structures is of great importance because the built environment is a huge economic and political asset, growing larger every year. Nowadays evaluation of the safety of existing structures is a major engineering task, and structural engineers are increasingly called upon to devise ways for extending the life of structures whilst observing tight cost constraints. Also, existing structures are expected to resist against accidental actions although they were not designed for. Engineers may apply specific methods for evaluation in order to preserve structures and to reduce a client’s expenditure. The ultimate goal is to limit construction intervention to a minimum, a goal that is clearly in agreement with the principles of sustainable development.
