Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical study of effects of free stream dissociation on the nonequilibrium gas properties behind shock waves is described. The analysis is based on a set of oblique shock relations which are generalized to include an arbitrary degree of nonequilibrium vibration, dissociation or ionization ahead of and/or behind the shock front. The frozen and equilibrium post-shock gas properties in air vs the ambient atom mass fraction and dissociation energy are presented at shock velocites ranging from 15,000 to 30,000 fps for normal and oblique hypersonic shock waves. Some of the potential effects of predissociation on the intervening relaxation process are briefly examined. Comparison is made with the properties behind geometrically-similar shock waves in a perfect undissociated ambient gas, independently of the preshock chemical history, for either the same shock velocity or the same total enthalpy. Significant changes in the post-shock density ratio, temperature, dissociation and ionization can occur if 10% or more of the total energy is tied up in preshock dissociation. Sharp reductions in the usual differences between the frozen and equilibrium properties associated with endothermic post-shock relaxation are observed when 50% or more of the total enthalpy is in preshock dissociation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Similarity parameters are developed which govern the length of nonequilibrium zones behind normal shock waves. Non-equilibrium effects produced by both vibrational relaxation and dissociation are considered. The parameters can also account for arbitrary levels of free-stream vibrational energy or dissociation level. The validity of the parameters is examined using numerical computations of the properties of the non-equilibrium fields. These computations are made with the aid of experimentally based rate expressions. The parameters, when written in a form describing the variation of non-equilibrium zone length with Mach number, are shown to have acceptable accuracy. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of ambient dissociation in a hypersonic free stream were examined for inviscid, nonequilibrium shock layers. The profiles of atom concentrations behind the bow shock were compared with those obtained for an undissociated free stream. Two types of correlations were developed, for fixed enthalpy and for fixed flight speed. For fixed enthalpy, the effect of ambient dissociation was shown to decay rapidly behind the shock. For fixed flight speed, the correlation was expressed by a simple subtraction of the ambient dissociation fraction. The subtraction rule preserves the gas temperature and its validity does not depend on a particular choice of the rate coefficient. The correlations were established for the simplified chemical model of a Lighthill gas. They were also extended to airflows with coupled chemical reactions. In this latter case, the application of the subtraction rule requires that the total oxygen content of the dissociated free stream be properly adjusted. It was found that the mixture must be richer in oxygen than the atmospheric proportion. The predicted correlations were verified on the basis of available numerical solutions for coupled air chemistry. The implications of the results were noted concerning simulation of real-gas effects.
