Poor-quality joints are characterized by a low density and high permeability; which generates surface distresses such as ravelling or longitudinal cracking. Density has been traditionally considered as the primary performance indicator of joint construction. Density measurements consist of taking cores in the field and determining their density in the laboratory. Although this technique provides the most accurate measure of joint density, it is destructive and time consuming. Nuclear and non-nuclear gauges have been used to evaluate the condition of longitudinal joint non-destructively, but did not show good correlation with core density tests. Consequently, agencies are searching for other non-destructive testing (NDT) options for longitudinal joints evaluation. NDT methods have significantly advanced for the evaluation of pavement structural capacity during the past decade. These methods are based either on deflection or wave velocity measurements. The light weight deflectometer (LWD) is increasingly being used in quality control/quality assurance to provide a rapid determination of the surface modulus. Corresponding backcalculation programs are able to determine the moduli of the different pavement layers; these moduli are input parameters for mechanistic-empirical pavement design. In addition, ultrasonic wave-based methods have been studied for pavement condition evaluation but not developed to the point of practical implementation. The multi-channel analysis of surface waves (MASW) consists of using ultrasonic transducers to measure surface wave velocities in pavements and invert for the moduli of the different layers. In this study, both LWD and MASW were used in the laboratory and in the field to assess the condition of longitudinal joints.

Book excerpt: The proceedings of June 1993 international symposium held in Atlanta, Georgia, called specifically to develop and standardized evaluation procedures for non-destructive methods of testing pavements. The 29 papers discuss analytical models and techniques, measurement and calculation techniques in the field and laboratory, problems and errors associated with backcalculation methods and design parameters, and testing for other pavement uses. Also includes a history of the quest for a standard and the status of that effort. Reproduced from typescripts. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book excerpt: Non-destructive testing of pavement structures can be achieved by accurately measuring and interpreting deflection data. this paper describes a computer program designed for simple and fast processing of deflection data collected using a falling weight deflectometer (fwd). a set of diagnostic parameters are calculated: first, maximum horizontal strain in the asphalt concrete (ac) under the test load, directly via the corresponding maximum curvature; next, the elastic stiffness (or young's modulus) of the subgrade; and finally, the vertical stress, strain and deflection on top of the subgrade, by means of an improved method of equivalent layer thickness. the actual stresses, strains, and deflections at test conditions can be normalized for standard ac temperature and standard test load. diagnostic and design applications are discussed. comparisons are made with parallel elastic layer analysis computations. for the covering abstract of the conference see irrd 807201.

Book excerpt: Asphalt pavements suffer various failures due to insufficient quality within their design lives. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) has been proposed to improve pavement quality through quantitative performance prediction. Evaluation of the actual performance (quality) of pavements requires in situ nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques that can accurately measure the most critical, objective, and sensitive properties of pavement systems. The purpose of this study is to assess existing as well as promising new NDT technologies for quality control/quality assurance (QC/QA) of asphalt mixtures. Specifically, this study examined field measurements of density via the PaveTracker electromagnetic gage, shear-wave velocity via surface-wave testing methods, and dynamic stiffness via the Humboldt GeoGauge for five representative paving projects covering a range of mixes and traffic loads. The in situ tests were compared against laboratory measurements of core density and dynamic modulus. The in situ PaveTracker density had a low correlation with laboratory density and was not sensitive to variations in temperature or asphalt mix type. The in situ shear-wave velocity measured by surface-wave methods was most sensitive to variations in temperature and asphalt mix type. The in situ density and in situ shear-wave velocity were combined to calculate an in situ dynamic modulus, which is a performance-based quality measurement. The in situ GeoGauge stiffness measured on hot asphalt mixtures several hours after paving had a high correlation with the in situ dynamic modulus and the laboratory density, whereas the stiffness measurement of asphalt mixtures cooled with dry ice or at ambient temperature one or more days after paving had a very low correlation with the other measurements. To transform the in situ moduli from surface-wave testing into quantitative quality measurements, a QC/QA procedure was developed to first correct the in situ moduli measured at different field temperatures to the moduli at a common reference temperature based on master curves from laboratory dynamic modulus tests. The corrected in situ moduli can then be compared against the design moduli for an assessment of the actual pavement performance. A preliminary study of microelectromechanical systems- (MEMS)-based sensors for QC/QA and health monitoring of asphalt pavements was also performed.

Book excerpt: FWD testing was completed on three urban arterial sections and six residential streets prior to and after rehabilitation to select the appropriate layout for FWD testing, establish joint performance threshold values, optimize FWD testing time and cost, and evaluate the effect of asphalt overlays on joint performance parameters. Moreover, the performance of full-depth repairs (FDR) and the incorporation of joint performance at the design stage were studied. Residential streets joint and basin FWD testing was completed to evaluate the structural capacity of residential streets and compare their performance to arterial regional roads. Comparisons between two widely used FWD geophones layouts allowed for the selection of a layout that represents the more critical loading condition on joints. Peak deflections and differential deflections were correlated with load transfer efficiencies to select threshold values for LTEs, peak deflections and differential deflections to trigger rehabilitation at the appropriate time. Statistical testing was used to optimize FWD testing to two load levels instead of four. The study found that asphalt overlays reduce recorded deflections and overestimate computed joints performance parameters. The effect of asphalt overlays was evaluated to establish correction factors, Fasphalt, for each load level to estimate deflections on the concrete surface using deflections obtained from testing on the overlay surface of Pembina Highway. The correction was found to improve the reliability of joint condition evaluation for that site. The study also found that FDRs generally restore the load transfer capacity of joints with good support and mechanical load transfer achieved. Moreover, it was demonstrated that joint performance information can be used at the design stage in the decision-making process to select the location and type of joint repairs. Lastly, residential streets were found to have less load transfer capacity than arterial regional roads and weaker pavement structure. The findings from this study indicated that NDT can be used to evaluate pavement condition, determine layer stiffness for use in rehabilitation design and to improve planning of rehabilitation through timely determination of rehabilitation needs and improvement of the reliability of load transfer efficiency estimate and void detection of PCC joints.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of literature concerned with the nondestructive testing of flexible pavements, and two types of testing methods are presented in this report. The first method deals with the measurement of pavement response through the deflection of the pavement surface. Effect of the loading characteristics, pavement structure, and environment on measured deflections are discussed. Experience has shown that deflections of certain magnitudes are associated with failure. Bending strain has also been associated with failure through field measurements of radius of curvature of the deflection basin and through laboratory fatigue studies. The second method involves the application of a vibratory load to the pavement surface and determination of pavement response through deflection of the surface under a low-frequency vibration or by measurement of wave propagation at higher frequencies. The deflection of the pavement under the vibratory loading is used to determine dynamic stiffness, or type of spring constant, for the pavement structure. The wave velocity is used to arrive at a shear modulus and compression modulus of each pavement layer and the subgrade as well as thickness of each layer. Theoretical calculations involved and typical results are presented. Conclusions are made from findings in the literature, and recommendations are given for developing a method of nondestructive evaluation of flexible pavements. (Author).
