Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its origins in algebraic number theory, the theory of non-unique factorizations has emerged as an independent branch of algebra and number theory. Focused efforts over the past few decades have wrought a great number and variety of results. However, these remain dispersed throughout the vast literature. For the first time, Non-Unique Factoriza

Book excerpt: "About binomial theorems I'm teeming with a lot of news, With many cheerful facts about the square on the hypotenuse. " - William S. Gilbert (The Pirates of Penzance, Act I) The question of divisibility is arguably the oldest problem in mathematics. Ancient peoples observed the cycles of nature: the day, the lunar month, and the year, and assumed that each divided evenly into the next. Civilizations as separate as the Egyptians of ten thousand years ago and the Central American Mayans adopted a month of thirty days and a year of twelve months. Even when the inaccuracy of a 360-day year became apparent, they preferred to retain it and add five intercalary days. The number 360 retains its psychological appeal today because it is divisible by many small integers. The technical term for such a number reflects this appeal. It is called a "smooth" number. At the other extreme are those integers with no smaller divisors other than 1, integers which might be called the indivisibles. The mystic qualities of numbers such as 7 and 13 derive in no small part from the fact that they are indivisibles. The ancient Greeks realized that every integer could be written uniquely as a product of indivisibles larger than 1, what we appropriately call prime numbers. To know the decomposition of an integer into a product of primes is to have a complete description of all of its divisors.

Download or read book Advances in Rings, Modules and Factorizations written by Alberto Facchini and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-02 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Occasioned by the international conference "Rings and Factorizations" held in February 2018 at University of Graz, Austria, this volume represents a wide range of research trends in the theory of commutative and non-commutative rings and their modules, including multiplicative ideal theory, Dedekind and Krull rings and their generalizations, rings of integer valued-polynomials, topological aspects of ring theory, factorization theory in rings and semigroups and direct-sum decompositions of modules. The volume will be of interest to researchers seeking to extend or utilize work in these areas as well as graduate students wishing to find entryways into active areas of current research in algebra. A novel aspect of the volume is an emphasis on how diverse types of algebraic structures and contexts (rings, modules, semigroups, categories) may be treated with overlapping and reinforcing approaches.

Book Synopsis Algebras, Rings and Modules by : Michiel Hazewinkel
Download or read book Algebras, Rings and Modules written by Michiel Hazewinkel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-10-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The text of the first volume of the book covers the major topics in ring and module theory and includes both fundamental classical results and more recent developments. The basic tools of investigation are methods from the theory of modules, which allow a very simple and clear approach both to classical and new results. An unusual main feature of this book is the use of the technique of quivers for studying the structure of rings. A considerable part of the first volume of the book is devoted to a study of special classes of rings and algebras, such as serial rings, hereditary rings, semidistributive rings and tiled orders. Many results of this text until now have been available in journal articles only. This book is aimed at graduate and post-graduate students and for all mathematicians who use algebraic techniques in their work. This is a self-contained book which is intended to be a modern textbook on the structure theory of associative rings and algebras and is suitable for independent study.

Book Synopsis Lattices, Semigroups, and Universal Algebra by : Jorge Almeida
Download or read book Lattices, Semigroups, and Universal Algebra written by Jorge Almeida and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains papers which, for the most part, are based on talks given at an international conference on Lattices, Semigroups, and Universal Algebra that was held in Lisbon, Portugal during the week of June 20-24, 1988. The conference was dedicated to the memory of Professor Antonio Almeida Costa, a Portuguese mathematician who greatly contributed to the development of th algebra in Portugal, on the 10 anniversary of his death. The themes of the conference reflect some of his research interests and those of his students. The purpose of the conference was to gather leading experts in Lattices, Semigroups, and Universal Algebra and to promote a discussion of recent developments and trends in these areas. All three fields have grown rapidly during the last few decades with varying degrees of interaction. Lattice theory and Universal Algebra have historically evolved alongside with a large overlap between the groups of researchers in the two fields. More recently, techniques and ideas of these theories have been used extensively in the theory of semigroups. Conversely, some developments in that area may inspire further developments in Universal Algebra. On the other hand, techniques of semi group theory have naturally been employed in the study of semilattices. Several papers in this volume elaborate on these interactions.
