Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first monograph to discuss in detail the current stage of development of nonpolar nitrides, with specific emphasis on the three main topics of crystal growth, properties and device studies. World-class researchers summarize their own recent achievements in their respective fields of expertise, covering both nonpolar and semipolar nitride materials. The bulk of the discussion in each chapter is related to the physical properties of the material obtained by the respective technique, in particular, defect density and properties of the defects in nonpolar nitrides. In addiiton, the optical and vibrational properties are also addressed in several chapters, as is progress in heterostructures, quantum wells and dots based on the AlGaN/GaN and the InGaN/GaN systems. Finally, an outlook of the application areas of the differently grown materials is presented in most chapters, together with the capabilities and limitations of the respective growth approaches used.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to GaN and its alloys AlGaInN (III-V nitrides), semiconductors with intrinsic properties well suited for visible and UV light emission and electronic devices working at high temperature, high frequency, and harsh environments. There has been a rapid growth in the industrial activity relating to GaN, with GaN now ranking at the second position (after Si) among all semiconductors. This is mainly thanks to LEDs, but also to the emergence of lasers and high power and high frequency electronics. GaN-related research activities are also diversifying, ranging from advanced optical sources and single electron devices to physical, chemical, and biological sensors, optical detectors, and energy converters. All recent developments of nitrides and of their technology are gathered here in a single volume, with chapters written by world leaders in the field. This third book of the series edited by B. Gil is complementary to the preceding two, and is expected to offer a modern vision of nitrides and of their devices to a large audience of readers.

Book excerpt: A quantum dot molecule (QDM) is composed of two or more closely spaced quantum dots or “artificial atoms.” In recent years, QDMs have received much attention as an emerging new artificial quantum system. The interesting and unique coupling and energy transfer processes between the “artificial atoms” could substantially extend the range of possible applications of quantum nanostructures. This book reviews recent advances in the exciting and rapidly growing field of QDMs via contributions from some of the most prominent researchers in this scientific community. The book explores many interesting topics such as the epitaxial growth of QDMs, spectroscopic characterization, and QDM transistors, and bridges between the fundamental physics of novel materials and device applications for future information technology. Both theoretical and experimental approaches are considered. Quantum Dot Molecules can be recommended for electrical engineering and materials science department courses on the science and design of advanced and future electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Book excerpt: The advent of the femto-second laser has enabled us to observe phenomena at the atomic timescale. One area to reap enormous benefits from this ability is ultrafast dynamics. Collecting the works of leading experts from around the globe, Non-Equilibrium Dynamics of Semiconductors and Nanostructures surveys recent developments in a variety of areas in ultrafast dynamics. In eight authoritative chapters illustrated by more than 150 figures, this book spans a broad range of new techniques and advances. It begins with a review of spin dynamics in a high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas, followed by the generation, propagation, and nonlinear properties of high-amplitude, ultrashort strain solitons in solids. The discussion then turns to nonlinear optical properties of nanoscale artificial dielectrics, optical properties of GaN self-assembled quantum dots, and optical studies of carrier dynamics and non-equilibrium optical phonons in nitride-based semiconductors. Rounding out the presentation, the book examines ultrafast non-equilibrium electron dynamics in metal nanoparticles, monochromatic acoustic phonons in GaAs, and electromagnetically induced transparency in semiconductor quantum wells. With its pedagogical approach and practical, up-to-date coverage, Non-Equilibrium Dynamics of Semiconductors and Nanostructures allows you to easily put the material into practice, whether you are a seasoned researcher or new to the field.

Book excerpt: Semiconductor Nanodevices: Physics, Technology and Applications explores recent advances in the field. The behaviour of these devices is controlled by regions of nanoscale dimensions which typically determine the local density of electronic states and lead to the observation of a range of quantum effects with significant potential for exploitation. The book opens with an introduction describing the development of this research field over the past few decades which contrasts quantum-controlled devices to conventional nanoscale electronic devices where an emphasis has often been placed on minimising quantum effects. This introduction is followed by seven chapters describing electrical nanodevices and five chapters describing opto-electronic nanodevices; individual chapters review important recent advances. These chapters include specific fabrication details for the structures and devices described as well as a discussion of the physics made accessible. It is an important reference source for physicists, materials scientists and engineers who want to learn more about how semiconductor-based nanodevices are being developed for both science and potential industrial applications. The section on electrical devices includes chapters describing the study of electron correlation effects using transport in quantum point contacts and tunnelling between one-dimensional wires; the high-frequency pumping of single electrons; thermal effects in quantum dots; the use of silicon quantum dot devices for qubits and quantum computing; transport in topological insulator nanoribbons and a comprehensive discussion of noise in electrical nanodevices. The optical device section describes the use of self-assembled III-V semiconductor nanostructures embedded in devices for a range of applications, including quantum dots for single and entangled photon sources, quantum dots and nanowires in lasers and quantum dots in solar cells. Explores the major industrial applications of semiconductor nanodevices Explains fabrication techniques for the production of semiconductor nanodevices Assesses the challenges for the mass production of semiconductor nanodevices

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present an overview of the theoretical background and experimental re sults in the rapidly developing field of semiconductor quantum dots - systems 8 6 of dimensions as small as 10- -10- m (quasi-zero-dimensional) that contain a small and controllable number (1-1000) of electrons. The electronic structure of quantum dots, including the energy quan tization of the single-particle states (due to spatial confinement) and the evolution of these (Fock-Darwin) states in an increasing external magnetic field, is described. The properties of many-electron systems confined in a dot are also studied. This includes the separation of the center-of-mass mo tion for the parabolic confining potential (and hence the insensitivity of the transitions under far infrared radiation to the Coulomb interactions and the number of particles - the generalized Kohn theorem) and the effects due to Coulomb interactions (formation of the incompressible magic states at high magnetic fields and their relation to composite jermions), and finally the spin-orbit interactions. In addition, the excitonic properties of quantum dots are discussed, including the energy levels and the spectral function of a single exciton, the relaxation of confined carriers, the metastable states and their effect on the photoluminescence spectrum, the interaction of an exciton with carriers, and exciton condensation. The theoretical part of this work, which is based largely on original re sults obtained by the authors, has been supplemented with descriptions of various methods of creating quantum-dot structures.
