Experts and young researchers came together to discuss nonlinear phenomena in condensed matter physics. The book is divided into five parts, each part containing a few general artic les introducing the subject, followed by related specialized papers. The first part deals with basic properties of nonlinear systems including an introduction to the general theoretical methods. Contrfbutions to the nonlinear aspects of phase transitions are collected in the second part. In the third part properties of incommensurate systems are discussed. Here, competing interactions lead to charge-density waves, soliton lattices and other complex structures. Another point of special interest, illustrated in the fourth part, is the 'chaotic' be havior of various systems such as Josephson junctions and discrete lattices.

Book excerpt: Results of a theoretical study of low-dimensional nonlinear systems are reported. One system is the isotropic Heisenberg ferromagnet with long range spin-spin interactions. The spin coupling parameter depends as the power law r-p on the distance r between spins. One-dimensional chains, two-dimensional square lattices, and two-layer films are considered as specific examples. The thermodynamic properties of these systems are investigated in a broad range of the parameter p using the Handscomb quantum Monte-Carlo method. The phase behavior and properties of the spin correlation functions are determined, and the critical indices and the temperature of the phase transition are calculated. Another system studied in this thesis is a dielectric multilayer structure with planar interfaces. In each of the layers the dielectric constant is generally a nonlinear function of the electric field. A new formalism is developed to study propagation of nonlinear optical waves in such a structure. The formalism is applied to a thin film sandwiched between two semi-infinite media and to an infinite periodic superlattice. Properties of the waves and the dispersion relations are investigated numerically.

Nonlinear dynamics has become a highly active research area, owing to many interesting developments during the last three decades in the theoretical analysis of dynamical processes in both Hamiltonian and dissipative systems. Research has been focused on a variety of problems, such as the characteristics of regular and chaotic motion in Hamiltonian dynamics, the problem of quantum chaos, the forma tion and properties of solitary spatio-temporal structures, the occurrence of strange attractors in dissipative systems, and the bifurcation scenarios leading to complex time behaviour. Until recently, predictions of the theory have been tested predominantly on insta bilities in hydrodynamic systems, where many interesting experiments have provided valuable input and have led to a fruitful interaction between experiment and theory. Fluid systems are certainly good candidates for performing clean experiments free from disturbing influences: with fluids, compared to solids, it is simpler to prepare good samples, the relevant length and time scales are in easily accessible ranges, and it is possible to do measurements "inside" the fluid, because it can be filled in after the construction of the apparatus. Further, the theory describing the macroscopic dynamics of fluids is well established and contains only very few parameters, all of which have well-known values.

The existence of mixed valency systems goes far back into the geological evolutionary history of the earth and other planets, while a plethora of mixed valency minerals has attracted attention since antiquity. Indeed, control of the oxidation states of Fe in its oxides (FeO, Fe304' Fe203) was elegantly used in vase painting by the ancient Greeks to produce the characteristic black and red Attic ceramics (Z. Goffer, "Archaeological Chemistry", Wiley, New York, 1980). It was, however, only 25 years ago that two reviews of mixed valency appeared in the literature almost simultaneously, signalling the first attempt to treat mixed valency systems as a separate class of compounds whose properties can be correlated with the molecular and the electronic structure of their members. Then mixed valency phenomena attracted the interest of disparate classes of scientists, ranging from synthetic chemists to solid state physicists and from biologists to geologists. This activity culminated with the NATO ASI meeting in Oxford in 1979. The 1980's saw again a continuing upsurge of interest in mixed valency. Its presence is a necessary factor in the search for highly conducting materials, including molecular metals and superconductors. The highly celebrated high T c ceramic superconducting oxides are indeed mixed valency compounds.
