Book excerpt: A one-dimensional steady state (FEL) amplifier, utilizing a linearly polarized magnetic wiggler field, is analyzed in the linear and non-linear operating regimes. Our formulation of the FEL problem includes all the efficiency enhancements schemes, electron beam thermal effects and collective effects, i.e., space charge waves. The axial electron velocity, due to a linearly polarized wiggler field, has a spatially oscillatory component. It is shown that this axial velocity jiggle does not result in phase incoherence between the electrons and the ponderomotive wave. The axial velocity jiggle is explicitly incorporated into our analytical model. The inclusion of the electron jiggle velocity is shown to have a quantitative effect on the non-linear wave particle dynamics. The electron trapping potential associated with the ponderomotive wave is also derived. Finally, a number of numerical examples pertinent to the design of a 10 micron FEL amplifier are presented.

Book excerpt: Single particle trajectories in a free electron laser device consisting of a linear periodic wiggler superimposed on a strong uniform axial guide field are examined by a formalism suitable for perturbation analysis and adaptable to wigglers of arbitrary geometry. For motion locked on to a single resonance (between the gyromotion and the periodicity induced by the wiggler in the axial velocity) and for sufficiently weak wiggler fields, bounded oscillations of the gyroradius and axial velocity are possible for a limited region of parameter and phase space. Optimal parameters for which the largest fraction of particles entering the drift chamber experience limited excursions in gyroradius and in axial velocity are determined. The mean drift of the guiding center off axis is used to determine the allowable length of the wiggler and of the drift tube for beam propagation. With increasing wiggler field bounded motion is eliminated, leading to transition between resonances, chaotic motion and significant spread in axial velocities of electrons. Comparison with experimental results is presented. (Author).

Our formulation incorporates various efficiency enhancement schemes. A linearly polarized magnetic wiggler is used for our formulation. The inherent gradient of the magnetic wigglers in the transverse direction introduces betatron oscillations, which cause an increase in the effective axial beam temperature. The radiation beam in the presence of the electron beam and the magnetic wiggler experience diffraction as well as refraction effects. We find that the 3-D effects can lead to substantial differences in the effects compared to the 1-D theory. Finally a 3-D numerical illustration of a 10.6 micron FEL is given. (Author).

The potential advantages of such free electron lasers include, among other things, continuous frequency tunability, very high power of operations and high efficiency. The free electron laser is characterized by a pump field; for example, a spatially periodic magnetic field, which scatters from a relativistic electron beam. The scattered radiation has a wavelength much smaller than the pump wavelength depending on the electron beam energy. We present a general self-consistent non-linear theory of the free electron laser process. The non-linear formulation of the temporal steady state free electron laser problem results in a set of coupled differential equations governing the spatial evolution of the amplitudes and wavelength of the radiation and space charge fields. These equations are readily solved numerically since the amplitude and wavelength vary on a spatial scale which is comparable to a growth length of the output radiation. A number of numerical/analytical illustrations are presented ranging from the optical to the submillimeter wavelength regime. Our non-linear formulation in the linear regime is compared with linear theory and agreement is found to be excellent. Analytical expressions for the saturated efficiency and radiation amplitude are also shown to be in very good agreement with out non-linear numerical solutions. Efficiency curves are obtained for both the optical and submillimeter FEL examples with fixed magnetic pump parameters. We show that these intrinsic efficiencies can be greatly enhanced by appropriately contouring the magnetic pump period.
