Book Synopsis Non-Governmental Development Organizations and the Poverty Reduction Agenda by : Jonathan J. Makuwira
Download or read book Non-Governmental Development Organizations and the Poverty Reduction Agenda written by Jonathan J. Makuwira and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Non-Governmental Development Organisations (NGDOs) have, over the past two decades, entered centre stage in their active participation in the social, political and economic issues affecting both the developing and developed world. This book offers a highly stimulating and concise summary of the NGDO sector by examining their history and metamorphosis; their influence on the social, political and economic landscapes of the ‘Northern’ and ‘Southern’ governments and societies. The author analyses competing theoretical and conceptual debates not only regarding their contribution to the global social political dynamism but also on the sector’s changing external influence as they try and mitigate poverty in marginalized communities. This book presents NGDOs as multidimensional actors propelled by the desire to make a lasting change but constrained by market-oriented approaches to development and other factors both internal and external to their environment. While a lot of attention has been given to understanding international NGDOs like World Vision International, Oxfam, Care International and Plan International, this book offers a critical analysis of grassroots organizations – those NGDOs founded and established by locals and operate at the deepest end of the development contexts. This work will be of interest to students and scholars in a range of areas including Development Studies, International Organizations and Globalization.

Book excerpt: The role of Non-Governmental Organizations in Africa has been widely discussed. Malawi like other African countries underwent a transition towards pluralism and democratization. The NGOs play a vital part in this process, especially since state bureaucracies and market mechanisms do not provide the expected development. But are NGOs really able to make up for the shortcomings of official institutions, considering the problems that still lie ahead? Taking their historical, political, economic and social environment into consideration, the study draws a picture of NGOs in Africa with all their possibilities and limitations.

Book excerpt: This book explores NGO presence through detailing relationships, personhoods and meaning making in a collection of Northern Malawian fishing villages. Its key claim is that NGOs’ projects and resources have less impact on villagers’ lives than the symbols they emit and the ways they encourage re-imaging development and renegotiating intra-community obligations and entitlements.

Book Synopsis Reforming the Malawian Public Sector by : Richard I. C. Tambulasi
Download or read book Reforming the Malawian Public Sector written by Richard I. C. Tambulasi and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2010 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reforming the Malawian Public Sector argues that the new public management model that Malawi, like most African countries, adopted under the influence of donor organisations has not led to the intended development. The book examines decentralisation, performance contracting, and public-private partnerships as key aspects of the reforms and comes to the conclusion that at best, it can be argued that the failures have been due to poor implementation and this could be attributed to the fact that the process was led by donors who lacked the necessary institutional infrastructure. The book uses the 2005/6 fertiliser subsidy programme, which the government embarked on despite donor resistance that it went against market models, but which turned out to be overwhelmingly successful to demonstrate the stateís developmental ability and potential. This volume is essential reading for academics, students, and practitioners seeking a deeper understanding of public administration, management, policy, development and governance in Africa and the rest of the developing world. The book is dedicated to the memory Guy Mhone, a Malawian, who was among Africaís leading scholars in public administration and governance. His works focused mainly on public sector reforms and development.

Book Synopsis Prisoners of Freedom by : Harri Englund
Download or read book Prisoners of Freedom written by Harri Englund and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2006-09-12 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this vivid ethnography, Harri Englund investigates how ideas of freedom impede struggles against poverty and injustice in emerging democracies. Reaching beyond a narrow focus on the national elite, Prisoners of Freedom shows how foreign aid and human rights activism hamper the pursuit of democratic citizenship in Africa. The book explores how activists’ aspirations of self-improvement, pursued under harsh economic conditions, find in the human rights discourse a new means to distinguish oneself from the poor masses. Among expatriates, the emphasis on abstract human rights avoids confrontations with the political and business elites. Drawing on long-term research among the Malawian poor, Englund brings to life the personal circumstances of Malawian human rights activists, their expatriate benefactors, and the urban and rural poor as he develops a fresh perspective on freedom—one that recognizes the significance of debt, obligation, and civil virtues.

Book Synopsis Exploring an African Civil Society by : Clive Gabay
Download or read book Exploring an African Civil Society written by Clive Gabay and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-11-05 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are civil society organizations in Africa agents of democratization, legitimators of corrupt ruling elites, agents of imperial control, or all of these things and more? Based on nearly five years of engagements with civil society organizations in Malawi, including interviews and broader ethnographic methods, this book presents a contemporary account of civil society activism in a country which provides some intriguing contextual background to these questions. Since Malawi adopted multi-party democracy in 1994 international donors have expended sustained energy on building civil society groups dedicated to accountability, good governance, and development. This effort appeared to pay off in the early 2000s with important development milestones being reached, and most spectacularly in 2011 when civil society organizations took to the streets in protest against the increasing authoritarianism of the democratically elected Bingu wa Mutharika. This book takes a critical approach to the events which have marked out the post-1994 civil society journey in Malawi, from the disciplinary relationship between civil society organizations and international donors, to the political economy of the activism which has marked these organizations through the period. In doing so this book reveals the ambiguities that plague the donor project in Malawi, with lessons for other African countries as well. While this donor project may be more embedded now than it ever has been, this book illustrates how it continues to suffer from the deleterious effects of domestic class and international neo-imperial relations.

Book Synopsis The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Children's Issues Worldwide [6 volumes] by : Irving Epstein
Download or read book The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Children's Issues Worldwide [6 volumes] written by Irving Epstein and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-12-30 with total page 3026 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the skyrocketing AIDS rate in Haiti to the oppressive pollution in industrial China, from the violent street culture of Nigeria to the crippling poverty in Nicaragua, from child trafficking in Thailand to child marriages in India, this jam-packed six-volume set explores all these issues and more in an unprecedented look at the world's children at the dawn of the 21st century. In recent years, while many countries have enjoyed a higher standard of living and improved working conditions, others have been torn apart by war and incapacitated by famine, and are struggling to improve life for their children and their future. Recent concern over the world's children has resulted in a global attempt to define what constitutes an acceptable childhood. New attention has been paid, not only to healthcare and secondary education, but also to the right to play and increased access to technology. The UN's codification of children's rights has done much to expand our understanding of what is needed for healthy growth and development of children and youth. Organized by region, The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Children's Issues Worldwide is the first globally focused set of this magnitude, offering extensive, up-to-date coverage of these critical issues. Original chapters accessibly synthesize current data on key topics, including education, play and recreation, child labor, family, health, laws and legal status, religious life, abuse and neglect, and growing up in the 21st century.
