Book excerpt: In the present monograph, we develop the kinetic theory of transport phenomena and relaxation processes in the flows of reacting gas mixtures and discuss its applications to strongly non-equilibrium conditions. The main attention is focused on the influence of non-equilibrium kinetics on gas dynamics and transport properties. Closed systems of fluid dynamic equations are derived from the kinetic equations in different approaches. We consider the most accurate approach taking into account the state-to-state kinetics in a flow, as well as simplified multi-temperature and one-temperature models based on quasi-stationary distributions. Within these approaches, we propose the algorithms for the calculation of the transport coefficients and rate coefficients of chemical reactions and energy exchanges in non-equilibrium flows; the developed techniques are based on the fundamental kinetic theory principles. The theory is applied to the modeling of non-equilibrium flows behind strong shock waves, in the boundary layer, and in nozzles. The comparison of the results obtained within the frame of different approaches is presented, the advantages of the new state-to-state kinetic model are discussed, and the limits of validity for simplified models are established. The book can be interesting for scientists and graduate students working on physical gas dynamics, aerothermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, non-equilibrium physical-chemical kinetics, and kinetic theory of gases.

By using the results of a set of exact computer solutions for air nozzle expansions to interpolate frozen atomic mole fraction and the fraction of total enthalpy frozen in dissociation and vibration, a method was devised for direct determination of (1) freestream quantities downstream of the freezing region in a nonequilibrium nozzle expansion, (2) the nozzle boundary layer growth, and (3) the aerodynamic effects of freestream nonequilibrium. The freestream results are shown to compare favorably with exact computer solutions. Illustrative applications to hypersonic inlet testing and downstream expansion following an MHD accelerator are included. (Author).

Book excerpt: The work described is a continuation of that reported previously in AEDC-TN-61-65 (calculation of the one-dimensional nonequilibrium flow of air through a hypersonic nozzle). In particular, a method is presented for the exact numerical calculation of the one-dimensional nonequilibrium flow of a general gas mixture through a converging-diverging nozzle. General equations are given for a mixture of perfect gases with an arbitrary number of species undergoing an arbitrary number of chemical and vibrational rate processes. An inexact but accurate method, similar in form to the method employed in the nonequilibrium case, is also given for calculating the corresponding one-dimensional equilibrium flow. The numerical method of solution applicable to both cases is described, including a simple procedure for starting the nonequilibrium calculations from an equilibrium condition and an improved method for controlling integration step size. The factors that affect over-all computation time are discussed. A computer program for an IBM 7090 has been written for the general gas mixture. Specific calculations are reported for a model of air consisting of O, N, NO, N2, and O2 and including eight chemical reactions plus the vibrational processes of the three diatomic species.

Book excerpt: Because of the growing interest in hypersonic flows, the AGARD Fluid Dynamics Panel initiated a sub-working group on instrumentation for hypersonics in 1989. This sub-group, chaired by J. WENDT (VKI -Belgium), was composed of: A. BOUTIER (ONERA -France), K. BUTEFISCH (DLR -Germany), R. CATTOLICA (SANDIA Lab. -USA), V. CLINE (AEDC -USA), A. GIRARD (ONERA -France), R. McKENZIE (NASA Ames -USA), S. OCHELTREE (NASA Langley -USA) and G. SMEETS (ISL -Franco-German Inst.). As a result of several meetings, the idea came to organize this workshop, 27th April - 1st May 1992, on "New Trends in Instrumentation for Hypersonic Research", at Le Fauga-Mauzac ONERA center, in France, where the new hot-shot arc-heated facility F4, as well as a new conference building, were recently completed. This workshop has been organized in close connection with the AGARD FDP Symposium to be held in Torino 4 - 8 May 1992 on "Theoretical and Experimental Methods in Hypersonic Flows": the main conclusions and ideas expressed by the papers and during the discussions of this workshop are reported in session 7 and have been presented in Torino in a special Instrumentation session. As chairman of this workshop, I express many thanks to the Organizing Committee composed of Karl BUTEFISCH, Andre GIRARD, Stewart OCHELTREE and John WENDT for their very constructive help, leading to a meeting that was recognized to be very fruitful for all the participants.

This book was released on 2012-01-24 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The high temperatures generated in gases by shock waves give rise to physical and chemical phenomena such as molecular vibrational excitation, dissociation, ionization, chemical reactions and inherently related radiation. In continuum regime, these processes start from the wave front, so that generally the gaseous media behind shock waves may be in a thermodynamic and chemical non-equilibrium state. This book presents the state of knowledge of these phenomena. Thus, the thermodynamic properties of high temperature gases, including the plasma state are described, as well as the kinetics of the various chemical phenomena cited above. Numerous results of measurement and computation of vibrational relaxation times, dissociation and reaction rate constants are given, and various ionization and radiative mechanisms and processes are presented. The coupling between these different phenomena is taken into account as well as their interaction with the flow-field. Particular points such as the case of rarefied flows and the inside of the shock wave itself are also examined. Examples of specific non-equilibrium flows are given, generally corresponding to those encountered during spatial missions or in shock tube experiments.
