The experiments were carried out in a temperature controlled shock tube and a light absorption technique permitted the time dependent concentration of the species NO2 to be determined. For shock strengths where the temperature did not exceed 400K only the first chemical reaction took place. Stronger shock waves excited both chemical reactions with temperatures up to 2100K, and for this reason, flow fields with two nonequilibrium modes could be investigated. Since the relaxation times of these two reactions were different by about three orders of magnitude, they could be experimentally uncoupled. A study of the reaction mechanisms and rate constants for both reactions was carried out. At shock strengths exciting only the first chemical reaction the complete picture of a non-equilibrium flow field with only one nonequilibrium mode could be investigated. In this situation, the shock strengths were varied from weak, fully dispersed waves to strong, partly dispersed waves. (Author).

Book excerpt: The method of characteristics for a chemically reacting gas is used in the construction of the time-dependent, one-dimensional flow field resulting from the normal reflection of an incident shock wave at the end wall of a shock tube. Nonequilibrium chemical reactions are allowed behind both the incident and reflected shock waves. All the solutions are evaluated for oxygen, but the results are generally representative of any inviscid, nonconducting, and nonradiating diatomic gas. The solutions clearly show that: (1) both the incident- and reflected-shock chemical relaxation times are important in governing the time to attain steady state thermodynamic properties; and (2) adjacent to the end wall, an excess-entropy layer develops wherein the steady state values of all the thermodynamic variables except pressure differ significantly from their corresponding Rankine-Hugoniot equilibrium values.

Book excerpt: The high temperatures generated in gases by shock waves give rise to physical and chemical phenomena such as molecular vibrational excitation, dissociation, ionization, chemical reactions and inherently related radiation. In continuum regime, these processes start from the wave front, so that generally the gaseous media behind shock waves may be in a thermodynamic and chemical non-equilibrium state. This book presents the state of knowledge of these phenomena. Thus, the thermodynamic properties of high temperature gases, including the plasma state are described, as well as the kinetics of the various chemical phenomena cited above. Numerous results of measurement and computation of vibrational relaxation times, dissociation and reaction rate constants are given, and various ionization and radiative mechanisms and processes are presented. The coupling between these different phenomena is taken into account as well as their interaction with the flow-field. Particular points such as the case of rarefied flows and the inside of the shock wave itself are also examined. Examples of specific non-equilibrium flows are given, generally corresponding to those encountered during spatial missions or in shock tube experiments.

Book excerpt: The problem of calculating the flow behind a normal shock front is discussed. The additional complication of finite reaction rate chemistry has been included. A numerical method and several results of flow across a shock wave with an eleven-species, thirteen reaction model of air are presented. Results of the method are discussed and compared with those of Hall, Escheroeder, and Marrone (inviscid hypersonic air flows with coupled non-equilibrium processes. IAS 30th annual meeting, Jan 1962). (Author).

They are the forum at which scientists concerned with shock waves present their research. They USE shock waves for chemical kinetics studies, for materials studies, and smashing kidney stones; they STUDY the phenomena associated with flows involving shock waves, such as supersonic flow, explosions, detonations, volcanic eruptions, and, in this symposium, even such with-it topics as impact of Shoemaker-Levy on Jupiter and blast waves in the World Trade Center. They also discover new, bigger and better ways of generating flows at hypervelocity speeds and develop their technological tools further. The international exchange of information is documented in the proceedings volumes, which have become a storehouse of information on the subject, documenting the history of this peculiar branch of science that involves chemists, physicists, engineers, geophysicists, material scientists and biologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer program has been developed for one-dimensional nonequilibrium reacting gas flow. The program is written in Fortran IV and is compatible with the IBM 7044/7094 direct coupled digital computer system at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. In addition to nonequilibrium chemistry, the program includes nonequilibrium vibrational and electronic energy relaxation and coupling effects between these energy modes and the chemistry. The formulation is based on a one-dimensional flow matching either a prescribed pressure or area variation along a streamtube. Thermodynamic properties are computed by assuming an ideal gas mixture and the equilibration of translational and rotational temperatures. The internal energy modes, rotation, vibration, and electronic excitation, are considered uncoupled; and a rigid rotator, cut off simple harmonic oscillator, independent of the electronic state, is assumed. Excitation of vibrational and electronic energies are treated similarly with terms which account for relaxation and chemical reactions. The effects of nonequilibrium vibrational and electronic states on chemical rates are included in the coupling analysis. The vibrational relaxation time constants were obtained from the Millikan and White data while the electronic relaxation time constants were determined for nitrogen from an analysis of existing shock tube radiation measurements. The computer program was used to solve for the nonequilibrium flow in a hypersonic nozzle and for eight streamlines in the inviscid flow field over a spherically blunted nine-degree semiapex angle cone at zero angle of attack. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational structural mechanics (CSM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) have emerged in the last two decades as new disciplines combining structural mechanics and fluid dynamics with approximation theory, numerical analysis and computer science. Their use has transformed much of theoretical mechanics and abstract science into practical and essential tools for a multitude of technological developments which affect many facets of our life. This collection of over 40 papers provides an authoritative documentation of major advances in both CSM and CFD, helping to identify future directions of development in these rapidly changing fields. Key areas covered are fluid structure interaction and aeroelasticity, CFD technology and reacting flows, micromechanics, stability and eigenproblems, probabilistic methods and chaotic dynamics, perturbation and spectral methods, element technology (finite volume, finite elements and boundary elements), adaptive methods, parallel processing machines and applications, and visualization, mesh generation and artificial intelligence interfaces.
