Book excerpt: Lessons learned from earthquakes in the last 50 years have spurred changes in building seismic code requirements, making it necessary to determine the seismic vulnerability of old military structures. This study addresses a popular type of building in high seismic zones that has lateral load-resisting systems constructed from reinforced concrete (R/C) frames with masonry infill panels. An experimental program was carried out to evaluate this structural system. Five single-story half-scale laboratory models with different numbers of bays were constructed. The five models represent: a single-bay bare frame, single-bay with concrete masonry unit (CMU) infill, single-bay with brick infill, double-bay with CMU infill, and triple-bay with brick infill. These models were fully instrumented and tested under lateral in-plane loading to failure. Non-linear finite element analyses were carried out on the experimental models. Load-deflection curves for finite element analysis (FEA) reasonably predicted experimental behavior of specimens in terms of deflection. Ultimate failure load corresponding to each specimen was predicted with accuracy. Finally, a new idealized analytical model was proposed to determine the capacity evaluation of this structural system. Post-yield behavior, residual strength, and the effects of bay multiplicity on structural behavior are also presented.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was carried out to investigate the in-plane behaviour of all-masonry infilled frames, i.e., concrete masonry infills bounded by reinforced masonry frames. To this end, six specimens including one masonry bare frame and five all-masonry infilled frame specimens were subjected to lateral loading applied at the frame top beam level to failure. The parameters studied included masonry infill strength, infill reinforcement, and presence of vertical loading. Masonry infill strength study considered a regular and a weaker strength of infills; infill reinforcement study considered two scenarios of horizontal reinforcement in the infill where one was the bed joint reinforcement implemented every other course in the infill and the other was the two bond beams implemented in the infill; and vertical load study involved one specimen under combined vertical and lateral loading where the vertical load was applied to the top beam and held constant while the lateral loading was increased to the specimen failure. Load vs. displacement response, cracking pattern and load, and failure mode and ultimate load for each specimen were obtained and discussed in detail. The experimental results were used to evaluate the validity of stiffness and strength provisions contained in the Canadian (CSA S304.14) and American (TMS 402/602.16) masonry design standards. The performance of specimens was also compared with the infills of the same geometry but bounded by RC frames. For all infilled frame specimens, the final failure mode seems to be controlled by severe diagonal cracking extending into the boundary columns or a combination of diagonal cracking and shear sliding as in the case of horizontally reinforced infills. No evident corner crushing was observed. An increase in infill strength increased the ultimate load of the infilled frame but showed no evident correlation with the infill-frame system stiffness. Implementing infill reinforcement did not have a significant effect on the ultimate strength but resulted in an increase in both the initial and cracking stiffnesses as well as ductility of the specimen. Presence of vertical load resulted in a marked increase in ultimate load of the infilled specimen but at the expense of a reduced ductility. In general, CSA S304-14 overestimated whereas TMS 402/602 underestimated the stiffness with a similar range of disparity to the test results. In the case of strength prediction, CSA S304 performed better than TMS 402/602 with predicted values closer to the test results. The comparison with infilled RC frames showed that behaviour, strength, and ductility of all-masonry infilled frames are similar to, and in some cases, slightly better than infilled RC frames.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A literature review revealed that there is limited technical information available on the subject of masonry infilled frames, in particular, the interaction between the infill and its bounding frame and how this interaction affects the infilled system behaviour and strength. This research was then conducted to further the understanding of the infill-to-frame interaction considering a range of geometric, material, loading characteristics of the infilled frame systems. To that end, both experimental and numerical studies were performed with the focus on the concrete masonry infills bounded by reinforced concrete frames. Both in-plane and out-of-plane loading situations on the infilled frames were considered. The experimental testing was designed to provide physical results of failure modes, behaviour and strength of infilled frames as affected by several key parameters. The numerical study began with development of a 3D finite element model capable of incorporating properties of masonry infilled frames using ABAQUS. An extensive validation process on the model ensued using the physical results. Once verified, the model was used in a finite element study where several geometric and material parameters with extended range of variations were systematically studied. In the experimental study, a total of 17 specimens were tested of which 1) ten were subjected to in-plane loading; 2) four were subjected to out-of-plane loading; and 3) three were tested under in-plane loading first and then tested under out-of-plane loading to failure. Infill openings and infill-to-frame interfacial gaps were designed as two varying parameters for 1) and 2) test scenarios. The varying in-plane damage was the parameter for 3) testing scenario. While the diagonal cracking followed by corner crushing predominated the in-plane failure, two-way arching with the shear cracking through the concrete masonry unit webs was identified as the main load-resisting mechanism in out-of-plane tests. As for the in-plane damaged specimens, the out-of-plane capacity was reduced as a function of experienced in-plane drift ratio. In the numerical study, the finite element model was shown to be capable of predicting the load-displacement responses as well as the cracking pattern and failure modes accurately for both in-plane and out-of-plane loading scenarios. The correlations between each studied parameter and the behaviour and strength of masonry infilled frames were presented and discussed. Modifications on the out-of-plane design method currently adopted by the American masonry standard (TMS 402/602-16) were proposed and was shown to improve the performance of the method. A lower-bound equation for evaluating the out-of-plane strength of masonry infills with prior in-plane damage was proposed and it showed to produce better estimate when compared to the existing method.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few decades, a considerable amount of experimental and analytical research on the seismic behaviour of masonry walls and buildings has been carried out. The investigations resulted in the development of methods for seismic analysis and design, as well as new technologies and construction systems. After many centuries of traditional use and decades of allowable stress design, clear concepts for limit state verification of masonry buildings under earthquake loading have recently been introduced in codes of practice.Although this book is not a review of the state-of-the-art of masonry structures in earthquake zones, an attempt has been made to balance the discussion on recent code requirements, state-of-the-art methods of earthquake-resistant design and the author's research work, in order to render the book useful for a broader application in design practice. An attempt has also been made to present, in a condensed but easy to understand way, all the information needed for earthquake-resistant design of masonry buildings constructed using traditional systems. The basic concepts of limit state verification are presented and equations for seismic resistance verification of masonry walls of all types of construction, (unreinforced, confined and reinforced) as well as masonry-infilled reinforced concrete frames, are addressed. A method for seismic resistance verification, compatible with recent code requirements, is also discussed. In all cases, experimental results are used to explain the proposed methods and equations. An important part of this book is dedicated to the discussion of the problems of repair, retrofit and rehabilitation of existing masonry buildings, including historical structures in urban centres. Methods of strengthening masonry walls as well as improving the structural integrity of existing buildings are described in detail. Wherever possible, experimental evidence regarding the effectiveness of the proposed strengthening methods is given.

Book excerpt: Masonry infill panels in framed structures affect the strength, stiffness, and ductility. For seismic loading, ignoring the composite action is not always on the safe side, since the interaction between the panel and the frame under lateral loads changes the stiffness and the dynamic characteristics of the structure, and hence, its response to seismic loads. To study the influence of brick masonry infill panels on seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) frames, equivalent diagonal strut is used to model the stiffness effect of the masonry panels. The response of a bare frame is compared with the full and partial infill with centrally located opening. In general, the shear forces in the columns are decreased by the presence of infill panels. When subjected to lateral loading, the frame with full infill has better response whereas; the response of infill with very large opening is comparable with bare frames.
