He says in his Meditations, From Rusticus I received the impression on my character that required improvement and discipline, and I am indebted to him for being acquainted with the Discourses of Epictetus.' That the Manual was highly esteemed by the Early Fathers of the Christian Church is evidenced by many references to it, and especially to the fact that Saint Nilus made it the rule of life of the Christian Anchorites of Mount Sinai. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses of Epictetus: Selections The date of his birth and death are um known, but it is claimed by some that he returned to Rome in the reign of Hadrian, in which case he must have lived to an extreme old age. Three topics are mentioned by Epic tetus upon which the whole of the Stoic philosophy was based: the Desires and Aversions, the Pursuits and Avoidances, and the Assents of the understanding. The Desires and Aversions were simple affections of the mind, Good always being the object of Desire, and Evil the object of Aversion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From Epictetus This little volume, which contains about one-fifth of the whole of Epictetus, is de signed to bring together the most useful and striking passages in a form convenient for ready use. It cannot give all the best in so small com pass, but those who miss favorite passages must remember that it is difficult to choose where so much is good, and yet so large a portion must be rejected for want of space. The numbers in parentheses at the beginning of the chapters re fer to the numbers Of the original chapters. This book is abridged from the translation of Mr. T. W. Higginson, by his kind permission and that of his publishers. I cannot do better than to quote from his own preface. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wit and Wisdom of Epictetus For we come into the world having by nature no idea of a right-angled triangle or of a quarter-tone, or of a semi-tone, but by a certain tradition of art we learn each of these things. And thus those who know them not, do not suppose that they know them. But good and evil, and nobleness and baseness, and the seemly and the unseemly, and happi ness and misfortune, and what is our concern and what is not, and what ought to be done and what not - who has come into the world without an im planted notion of these things Thus we all use these terms, and endeavour to fit our natural conceptions to every several thing. Behold, the beginning of philosophy is the observation of how men contradict one another, and the search whence comes this contradiction, and the censure and mistrust of bare opinion. And it is an inquiry into that which seems, whether it rightly seems; and the discovery of a certain rule, even as we have found a balance for weights and a plumb linefor straight and crooked. This is the beginning of philosophy. Are all things right to all to whom they seem so? But how can contradictory things be right? Epictetus, a Greek Stoic and freed slave, ran a thriving philosophy school in Nicopolis in the early second century AD. His animated discussions were celebrated for their rhetorical wizardry and were written down by Arrian, his most famous pupil. The Discourses argue that happiness lies in learning to perceive exactly what is in our power to change and what is not, and in embracing our fate to live in harmony with god and nature. In this personal, practical guide to the ethics of Stoicism and moral self-improvement, Epictetus tackles questions of freedom and imprisonment, illness and fear, family, friendship and love. Translated and Edited with an Introduction by Robert Dobbin

Book excerpt: From the team that brought you The Obstacle Is the Way and Ego Is the Enemy, a daily devotional of Stoic meditations—an instant Wall Street Journal and USA Today Bestseller. Why have history's greatest minds—from George Washington to Frederick the Great to Ralph Waldo Emerson, along with today's top performers from Super Bowl-winning football coaches to CEOs and celebrities—embraced the wisdom of the ancient Stoics? Because they realize that the most valuable wisdom is timeless and that philosophy is for living a better life, not a classroom exercise. The Daily Stoic offers 366 days of Stoic insights and exercises, featuring all-new translations from the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, the playwright Seneca, or slave-turned-philosopher Epictetus, as well as lesser-known luminaries like Zeno, Cleanthes, and Musonius Rufus. Every day of the year you'll find one of their pithy, powerful quotations, as well as historical anecdotes, provocative commentary, and a helpful glossary of Greek terms. By following these teachings over the course of a year (and, indeed, for years to come) you'll find the serenity, self-knowledge, and resilience you need to live well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Discourses of Epictetus Epictetus - The books did not have a formal title in ancient times. Although Simplicius called them Diatribai other writers gave them titles such as Dialexis , and Homiliai . The modern name comes from the titles given in the earliest medieval manuscript: "Arrian's Diatribai of Epictetus" . The Greek word Diatribai literally means "informal talks".As to the date, it is generally agreed that the Discourses were composed sometime in the years around 108 AD. Epictetus himself refers to the coins of Trajan, which shows he was teaching during that reign. Arrian was suffect consul in around 130, and since forty-two was the standard age for that position, he would have been at the right age of around twenty in 108. Furthermore the "commissioner" of the "free cities" to whom Discourse iii. 7 is addressed is thought to be the same man Pliny the Younger addresses his Letter viii. 24a letter which has been dated to around 108.

Book excerpt: Explore the ancient Stoic way of thinking and the valuable lessons it holds for contemporary life This new volume contains the Enchiridion and selected Discourses of the great Stoic philosopher Epictetus, who believed that moral philosophy should be a practical guide to leading a better life. His works offer timeless instruction on how to live authentically, “in accordance with nature”. Like other prominent Stoic thinkers Seneca and Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus teaches us to attain self-mastery through the use of reason and virtuous living. In this striking addition to the Capstone Classics series, you can discover—or rediscover—the renowned Greek philosopher's guide to living the best life possible. Epictetus teaches that personal power and peace of mind are your birthright. Epictetus focused on maintaining discipline in matters that are under our control, and letting go of matters that are not. The key to improving oneself is to learn what is ‘in one's power’, not judging as good or bad anything over which we have no sway. In this remarkably simple yet transformative worldview, we gain peace of mind and have a greater impact on the world. Discover the practical moral philosophy of Epictetus, renowned Greek philosopher in the Stoic tradition Gain solace and peace of mind from the Stoic message of letting go of what we cannot control Learn the key messages of Epictetus in a new edition introduced by personal development author Tom Butler-Bowdon Gain the keys to a virtuous, productive, and happy life Whether you are formally studying philosophy or pursuing your own personal development, Selected Discourses - The Wisdom of Epictetus will make an excellent addition to your library.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gift Edition in Full Color with 30 Beautiful Photographs This is a modern rendition of Epictetus' classic work, The Handbook, or Enchiridion. It answers the question, "How can we be good and live free and happy, no matter what's happening around us?" It is a concise summary of the teachings of Epictetus, as transcribed by his illustrious student, Flavius Arrian. Epictetus, the great Stoic philosopher, was born around 55 CE in Hierapolis (present day Pamukkale, Turkey). Epictetus means 'slave' or 'acquired'. It is said that his parents sold him to Epaphroditos, a wealthy freedman and secretary to Nero. Eventually, Epictetus became a freedman himself and began to teach his philosophy. This widely acclaimed modern rendition by Dr. Chuck Chakrapani brings ancient concepts to modern life.
