Book excerpt: THE INSTANT NATIONAL BESTSELLER "Tombstone is written in a distinctly American voice." —T.J. Stiles, The New York Times “With a former newsman’s nose for the truth, Clavin has sifted the facts, myths, and lies to produce what might be as accurate an account as we will ever get of the old West’s most famous feud.” —Associated Press The true story of the Earp brothers, Doc Holliday, and the famous Battle at the OK Corral, by the New York Times bestselling author of Dodge City and Wild Bill. On the afternoon of October 26, 1881, eight men clashed in what would be known as the most famous shootout in American frontier history. Thirty bullets were exchanged in thirty seconds, killing three men and wounding three others. The fight sprang forth from a tense, hot summer. Cattle rustlers had been terrorizing the back country of Mexico and selling the livestock they stole to corrupt ranchers. The Mexican government built forts along the border to try to thwart American outlaws, while Arizona citizens became increasingly agitated. Rustlers, who became known as the cow-boys, began to kill each other as well as innocent citizens. That October, tensions boiled over with Ike and Billy Clanton, Tom and Frank McLaury, and Billy Claiborne confronting the Tombstone marshal, Virgil Earp, and the suddenly deputized Wyatt and Morgan Earp and shotgun-toting Doc Holliday. Bestselling author Tom Clavin peers behind decades of legend surrounding the story of Tombstone to reveal the true story of the drama and violence that made it famous. Tombstone also digs deep into the vendetta ride that followed the tragic gunfight, when Wyatt and Warren Earp and Holliday went vigilante to track down the likes of Johnny Ringo, Curly Bill Brocius, and other cowboys who had cowardly gunned down his brothers. That "vendetta ride" would make the myth of Wyatt Earp complete and punctuate the struggle for power in the American frontier's last boom town.

Today, 100 percent of that prime spawning area is behind dams that do not have fish ladders. Hells Canyon Dam, the third dam of the Hells Canyon Complex was completed in 1961. Fall Chinook numbers were estimated at 15,000 in 1957 and dwindled to less than 10 fish by 1971. On the North Fork Clearwater River in Idaho, steelhead returning from the ocean once produced 1,000 redds (nests) per mile. The North Fork is approximately 28 percent of the Clearwater basin, but produced 50 to 60 percent of the entire Clearwater basin's steelhead production. The North Fork of the Clearwater River was also suitable spawning habitat to accommodate 74,000 Chinook salmon redds. Today, the North Fork of the Clearwater River is unavailable to steelhead and Chinook. Dworshak Dam, built without a fish passage system was completed in 1968. In order to have healthy, harvestable, self-sustaining salmon populations, there must be an adequate number of returning adults reaching an adequate volume of spawning habitat. If the number of returning adults is diminished, or the volume of adequate habitat is diminished, healthy, harvestable, self-sustaining salmon populations cannot be maintained. Recent studies and research have been limited in the scope of their efforts, limiting possible outcomes. Some are agenda driven while others ignore basic salmon biology. It is the purpose of this effort to present timeline "cause and effect," to help develop the needed focus to save Snake River Salmon.

Book excerpt: Uncle Tom Allen once told me that every time you speak a name of someone deceased somewhere, somehow they feel it and it makes them feel good. My mother had a hobby of clipping obituaries out of newspapers, which she started before I was ever born. She said that they made her laugh and they made her cry. They gave her strength during trying times. After I was born, I too took up the hobby and later in life began to share some of the old epitaphs with friends. This book is a collection of those obituaries, witty epitaphs and a list of where famous people are buried. Later, I wrote newspaper articles and shared with my readers some of these old epitaphs. They wrote me letters telling me how they enjoyed them. Later, I sent copies to friends in the hospital and nursing homes. They told me it cheered them up. So, I decided to write this book to prove that there is some wit in death. It will make you laugh, cry and feel good!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book relates the stories and describes the memorials of the people buried in Shelby, North Carolina's historic Sunset Cemetery, a microcosm of the Southeastern United States. The authors, an academic and a journalist, detail the lives and memories of people who are buried here, from Civil War soldiers to those who created the Jim Crow South and promoted the narrative of the Lost Cause. Featured are authors W.J. Cash and Thomas Dixon, whose racist novel was the basis for The Birth of a Nation. Drawn from historical research and local memory, it includes the tales of musicians Don Gibson and Bobby "Pepper Head" London, as well as a paratrooper who died in the Battle of the Bulge and other ordinary folks who rest in the cemetery. A bigger responsibility is to give a voice to the silenced, enslaved people of color buried in unmarked graves. Cemeteries are sacred places where artistry and memory meet--to understand, we need both the tales and the tombstones.
