Book Synopsis Pop-Culture Pedagogy in the Music Classroom by : Nicole Biamonte
Download or read book Pop-Culture Pedagogy in the Music Classroom written by Nicole Biamonte and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2010-10-28 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teachers the world over are discovering the importance and benefits of incorporating popular culture into the music classroom. The cultural prevalence and the students' familiarity with recorded music, videos, games, and other increasingly accessible multimedia materials help enliven course content and foster interactive learning and participation. Pop-Culture Pedagogy in the Music Classroom: Teaching Tools from American Idol to YouTube provides ideas and techniques for teaching music classes using elements of popular culture that resonate with students' everyday lives. From popular songs and genres to covers, mixes, and mashups; from video games such as Dance Dance Revolution and Guitar Hero to television shows like American Idol, this exciting collection offers pedagogical models for incorporating pop culture and its associated technologies into a wide variety of music courses. Biamonte has collected well-rounded essays that consider a variety of applications. After an introduction, the essays are organized in 3 sections. The first addresses general tools and technology that can be incorporated into almost any music class: sound-mixing techniques and the benefits of using iPods and YouTube. The middle section uses popular songs, video games, or other aspects of pop culture to demonstrate music-theory topics or to develop ear-training and rhythmic skills. The final section examines the musical, lyrical, or visual content in popular songs, genres, or videos as a point of departure for addressing broader issues and contexts. Each chapter contains notes and a bibliography, and two comprehensive appendixes list popular song examples for teaching harmony, melody, and rhythm. Two indexes cross-reference the material by title and by general subject. While written with college and secondary-school teachers in mind, the methods and materials presented here can be adapted to any educational level.

Book excerpt: North Korea continues to taunt the United States by detonating nuclear weapons and launching long-range missiles across the Pacific. This threat is suddenly overshadowed by the destruction of the US fleet by a group of highly coordinated Islamic terrorists as it sails through the Straits of Hormuz and into the Persian Gulf. As the crisis escalates, little attention is paid to several blue, bloated and grossly disfigured Asian sailors who wash ashore in Galveston, Texas. Likewise, the North Korean cargo ship 'Seoul' is able to slip into Whiskey Bay, Louisiana unnoticed, where she offloads her cargo: highly radioactive weapons of mass destruction. As more Asian sailors become deathly ill from the many weeks spent at sea in close proximity to their lethal cargo, they are transferred to a small hospital in Carencrow, Louisiana for treatment. Dr. Rex Bent, an emergency room physician, immediately becomes suspicious and notifies the proper authorities. With their coup de grace in jeopardy the extremists realize that not only Dr. Bent but also his wife and confidante, Sharon, must be eliminated without raising suspicion. Pursued and hounded like traitors who had betrayed their country, the Bents are in a race against time, determined to discover the significance of 'Prussian Blue'."

Behold: a story so HUGE it demanded a graphic novel! A story so NUTS that it incorporates BOTH senses of that word (insanity AND the weird hard fruit thingies) (they're fruits, did you know that?) But in this all-new graphic novel, she'll encounter her most dangerous, most powerful, most unbeatable enemy yet: HERSELF. Specifically, an evil duplicate made possible through mad science (both computer and regular) as well as some Bad Decisions. In other words, SQUIRREL GIRL BEATS UP THE MARVEL UNIVERSE! YES. Book Synopsis The Humble Warlock by : Omar Daniels

Book excerpt: The story begins with Jason and Vera. A young witch and warlock with an insatiable appetite for folly. Together they wisk away their victims in satisfy themselves, all through the night. Next is the story of Victor, a young Vampire whose long-lost girlfriend returns to haunt him, and his brethren, as they continue to survive undetected by the human world. After that is a dish of candy. Taffy is known to make people disappear and Gavin likes keeping his enemies at bay. Together they hatch a plan to get rid of those adversaries he rather not tolerate. Those and the following stories are the tales of the Humble Warlock. An ancient soul, he watches over the Earth, as he assimilates the worst, while he gains insight into the woes of mankind. The Humble Warlock is a collection of short stories I composed when this journey first began. I had a lot of ideas surge forth within a short time while in the midst of grappling with and regaining a hold of this craft. Most of the stories are retellings of well-known tales, oldies but goodies, along with a peppering of some more modern stories. I composed, edited (over an excruciating long period of time), and designed the cover for this piece of work as well as developed the interior design. It is somewhat brief, because at the time, my goal was to start a series with this title. I've since had to move on from this particular form but may return later if my luck gets a little better. If you like horror, sci-fi, fantasy tech, or old-fashioned space opera, or anything in between, then you'll probably get a kick out of the Humble Warlock. Omar Daniels
