She didn't take her kids to school. She didn't go to work. She didn't go to the gym. When she pulled herself out of bed hours later than she should have, she found a note from her husband next to two empty bottles of wine and a stack of unpaid bills: You need to get your sh*t together. Book Synopsis Noah Webster's Spelling Book Method for Teaching Reading and Spelling by : Donald L. Potter
Download or read book Noah Webster's Spelling Book Method for Teaching Reading and Spelling written by Donald L. Potter and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a little known fact that reading was taught by means of spelling for over 200 years. Today the impact of spelling on reading achievement is not as well appreciated as it once was. The late Dr. Ronald P. Carver did extensive research into the causal relationships between spelling instruction and reading ability. Carver concluded, "One very important way to learn how to pronounce more words accurately is sometimes overlooked, that is, learning to spell more words accurately." (Causes of High and Low Reading Achievement, p. 178). He also notes that "spelling was used to teach reading for almost 200 years, but by the beginning of the 20th century, the tide had so turned that learning to spell was largely seen as incidental to learning to read." Quoting C. A. Perfetti, Carver observed, "practice at spelling should help reading more than practice of reading helps spelling." (p. 179. In June of 2004 Miss Geraldine Rodgers sent me her essay, "Why Noah Webster's Way Was the Right Way." She argued from the history of reading and the psychology of reading that Webster's spelling book method of teaching reading and spelling was superior to all other methods. I was surprised to learn that that Webster, in his 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language, defined a Spelling Book as, " A book for teaching children to spell and read." He also wrote under the entry, Spelling, "To tell the name of letters of a word, with a proper division of syllables, for the purpose of learning the pronunciation. In this manner children learn to read by first spelling the words." You can see that Webster was quite clear about the dual purpose of the spelling books in his day. You can imagine my surprise at the improvement I began to get with my tutoring students when they started working through Webster's Spelling Book. I decided to type up my own edition to use in my private tutoring and my tutoring work at the Odessa Christian School in Odessa, TX, where I teach remedial reading and Spanish. In this edition, I have retained everything in the original 1908 (descendant from the 1829 edition). The only differences relate to formatting. I chose to list the words in rows instead of columns. I also allow the words to divide at the ends of lines. I have found that this works fine for all students. We are teaching students to read and spell by syllables and not by word shapes or context. When reading and spelling are taught by the Spelling Book Method, all guessing at words from shape or context is completely eliminated. The student's total focus is on pronouncing the words correctly, high levels of comprehension are a natural result.

Book Synopsis Spelling Rules and Patterns for Ages 10-11: to Learn, Improve and Have Fun with Spelling and Writing by : Joanne Rudling
Download or read book Spelling Rules and Patterns for Ages 10-11: to Learn, Improve and Have Fun with Spelling and Writing written by Joanne Rudling and published by . This book was released on 2018-08-03 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For British spellings focusing on KS2 curriculum requirements. This colourful, fun book is ideal for kids (including dyslexics) who are struggling with spelling and phonics by systematically focusing on areas that other spelling books and schemes ignore: improving visual memory, using memory tricks, noticing letter patterns, knowing spelling rules & exceptions, building words with prefixes and suffixes, understanding the history of spelling and why spelling is the way it is. Using a combination of well-known, proven literacy techniques and spelling strategies, this book will help kids learn, remember, and improve their spellings while reinforcing and building: * spelling knowledge, * confidence, * love of spelling and writing. The book is a great resource for teachers and tutors, too, because it explains why these "tricky" spellings are the way they are, including the rules and history of them - so you can answer those awkward questions about them. The book also provides some great ideas for exercises, group work, and games in the classroom. Reviews/feedbackGraham J Spooner of The Sensible Tuition CompanyI enjoyed reading through the first little section actually with the 'tricks and tips' for how to develop your spelling. This is exactly the sort of thing that my students are asking me for advice on regularly - and there are a lot of things in here that I know will be directly useable in lessons. I like the gap filling exercises - again, something like this makes the book a GREAT resource for a tutor or teacher as we could lift/adapt these exercises for 1:1 work. I like the way you've really opened up the material with the word lists. Again (speaking from the perspective of a private tutor) I think this is particularly useful as a resource to test a student's understanding (perhaps bringing these words into a game of hangman or other gap fill exercises). The grammar bits were quite memorable, I like your no-nonsense approach and voice that you have here. It's just useful stuff delivered without unnecessary padding but still accessible! I think that overall the book definitely fills a 'gap' by getting students actually looking at words, decoding them and building their intuition about how they are made, remade and deconstructed. It's also got a nice balance in its content in that it is accessible to a student at 10-11, but also useful for a tutor to adapt and create exercises from without much stress. I really like the use of colour throughout. I also really enjoyed the history bits too (e.g. about Latin roots of words) - very interesting. From Jessica and Roman McA.My son didn't lose concentration and worked for 20 mins without one single complaint. He really liked the word searches. He said writing sentences and drawing pictures was fun. He also liked filling in the missing letters, which I think is a brilliant way of really taking in the sequence of the letters. Roman scored really well on the tests, which is pretty good considering he hates spelling!

Book Synopsis Inglish Maed Simpl by : Chris Marquis
Download or read book Inglish Maed Simpl written by Chris Marquis and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2020-09-09 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quite simply, English should be Written as it Sounds, and Spoken as it is Written. Inglish Maed Simpl shows exactly how this can be done! Followed carefully, this text will enable publishers everywhere to transliterate the English language into an identically sounding language that is written as it is pronounced and pronounced as it is written. Read these 50 pages and you can do it yourself! For hundreds of years now, there has been a desire to sort out the spelling of the English language. William Caxton brought the printing press to London in 1476, at which time spelling became important, but was poorly served by foreign ideas and poorly translated English bibles in the following century. (page 17) In Old English, around 900 AD, these two ‘th’ sounds correctly had different symbols: Þ as thorn for three/phree, maths/maphz, or thing/phing; and ð as edh or eth. Thorn was written like ‘b’ on top of ‘p’; we keep the ‘p’ and write it ‘ph’ (phee). Eth was a circle with a wind blown cross on top, recently revived by the International Phonetic Alphabet; we will stay with the ‘th’ (th) for rather/râther, other/uther, or then. (page 9) In these fact-filled pages, readers discover how the English language will be written in the very near future! At first it may be more popular with those learning English as a Second Language (ESL). But soon the benefits to everyone will become obvious! Babies born after the new text becomes commonplace, will learn sooner and advance further. After seeing how much faster their child learns to read, write and pronounce English, the parent’s pride in their son or daughter will soon outshine a more fragile pride in a knowledge of English spelling, based more on memory than logic. “Typesetters, paid by the word, developed an understandable taste for long words.” Correctly spelling words according to their pronunciation, followed by very simple unwavering rules, is a first step to slow down or arrest the tendency for the language to lose its variety and clarity of sounds. (page 16)
