Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From internationalist and nonpartisan progressive, author of "Same Ole or Something New" and "BREAKDOWN," comes another thought-provoking work NO LAND AN ISLAND NO PEOPLE APART challenging readers to face the "callously immoral, lawless, relentlessly regressive model in U.S. foreign relations"; and embrace an authentic progressivism. "This book is unconcerned with political fi gures per se (or their parties)," Bennett says, "but rather with a malignant system maintained by a parade of tentacled regimes whose offi cial (elected) base of operation begins in the capital of the United States, a system that is seemingly endorsed by the people of the United States." The author maintains that the United States has created and entrenched a narrow worldview, espousing an attitude that all land and peoples belong to America to use and abuse, to pillage and plunder. In this work, Dr. Carolyn LaDelle Bennett takes a second look at U.S. relations with Afghanistan and Pakistan, Iran and Iraq, Bahrain and Yemen, Libya and Somalia; and sees a continuing BREAKDOWN that worsens in act and consequence. She then presents her own ideas and worldview; and a challenge to embrace a nonviolent, transformative, inclusive progressivism imbued with a sense of global society, a sensibility that inspires constructive, continuous forward movement. Bold and daring, NO LAND AN ISLAND NO PEOPLE APART is an educator's guide, a philosopher's critique, a news writer's eye, an internationalist's sensibility chronicling U.S. foreign relations violence and the human costs East Africa crossing the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden into Persia, the Middle East, South Central Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Far off the coast of California looms a harsh rock known as the island of San Nicholas. Dolphins flash in the blue waters around it, sea otter play in the vast kep beds, and sea elephants loll on the stony beaches. Here, in the early 1800s, according to history, an Indian girl spent eighteen years alone, and this beautifully written novel is her story. It is a romantic adventure filled with drama and heartache, for not only was mere subsistence on so desolate a spot a near miracle, but Karana had to contend with the ferocious pack of wild dogs that had killed her younger brother, constantly guard against the Aleutian sea otter hunters, and maintain a precarious food supply. More than this, it is an adventure of the spirit that will haunt the reader long after the book has been put down. Karana's quiet courage, her Indian self-reliance and acceptance of fate, transform what to many would have been a devastating ordeal into an uplifting experience. From loneliness and terror come strength and serenity in this Newbery Medal-winning classic.

This book was released on 1987-06-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to most previous works on the subject, this is not a local or regional history, but a book in colonial and/or imperial history which focuses on Prince Edward Island. This broader perspective allows Bumsted to show, for example, that the decision to distribute land to proprietors was a comprehensible and even liberal move by British government in the context of the imperial expansion of the 1760s. Bumsted demonstrates that the external influence of the American Revolution is more important than had been thought, both in isolating the island from Britain and, through the handling of Loyalist immigrants, in exacerbating the conflicts over land ownership. Previously, Prince Edward Island's crucial formative period from 1763 to the end of the eighteenth century has not received sufficient attention, while the proprietorial system has received too much attention without sufficient critical analysis. Land, Settlement, and Politics on Eighteenth-Century Prince Edward isalnd redresses the balance.

After their quest to find the Monster, Sola and her friends have gone down separate paths. Sola spends her days on the open seas while Hunder stays close to home as the chief of the unified Sun and Fortress Islands. And Wick? Well . . . it’s almost as if he’s become a ghost. Then their world is thrown into chaos when Alef, the captain of one of Hunder’s ships, brings news of a massive island—a continent—that he says the Sun and Fortress islanders are destined to claim for their own. Alef and Hunder launch an expedition that threatens to bring death and destruction to any who stand in their way. Sola must make a choice—step aside and allow other islanders to die, or risk her own life in order to stop her friend.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic and heartbreaking tale of one man’s fight to protect nature, and a treasured way of life, against the forces of greed. In a corner of the Big Cypress Swamp, to the north of the Florida Everglades, lives Charlie Jumper, and eighty-six-year-old Seminole man. Unlike the younger American Indians who have adopted white civilization, Charlie and his wife cling to the old ways, hunting and fishing in the great swamp and farming a tiny plot of higher ground. Charlie has been diligently teaching his grandson, Timmy, about the swamp and its creatures. But their simple existence is suddenly threatened when a large tract of swamp is bought by a corporation, and Charlie is told that he will have to leave. From his youth, Charlie remembers the slaughter of egrets and alligators by the white man and the logging of the giant cypress. Rather than surrender the land that is his life to this final indignity, Charlie decides to fight back. It is an uneven contest. First come the great machines that silt up the streams; then the workmen inadvertently poison the marsh; and, attempting to sabotage the construction equipment, Charlie’s best friend is killed. Realizing that there can be no compromise with the white man who destroys all he touches, Charlie leaves his family and feels into the swamp, seeking the lost island known in the Seminole legends as Forever Island.
