Book Synopsis Meanings and Other Things by : Gary Ostertag
Download or read book Meanings and Other Things written by Gary Ostertag and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-24 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stephen Schiffer's writing has been central to analytic philosophy of language and mind since the 1970s. In 1972 his book Meaning launched an important research program into Gricean, or intention-based, approaches to linguistic meaning, which would come to dominate much subsequent theorizing about language. A sea change occurred in 1987 with the publication of Remnants of Meaning. Schiffer here repudiated the project initiated by Meaning, arguing that the theory of public-language meaning it described and the account of mental representation it required were based on false presuppositions. The ramifications here were far reaching and set the agenda for discussions in the philosophy of language and mind for a generation. In 2003, The Things We Mean initiated a more positive program, but one informed by the negative results of Remnants. Things also reflected the broadening of Schiffer's concerns, which now extended to metaphysics, metaethics, and the skeptical paradoxes. In Meanings and Other Things fourteen leading philosophers explore central themes in Schiffer's writings. Topics range from theories of meaning to moral cognitivism, the nature of paradox, and the problem of vagueness. The volume also contains a comprehensive introduction that describes the evolution of Schiffer's thought, and closes with Schiffer's replies to his critics, extended essays that bring us up to date on Schiffer's current thinking on the themes that have defined not only his career, but philosophy of language as it is now practised.
Book Synopsis No Jesus, No Heaven, No Salvation by : Jeff Everett
Download or read book No Jesus, No Heaven, No Salvation written by Jeff Everett and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-05-31 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title and the contents of the book came to me in the middle of the night. I was struggling with the security of the salvation. I was tossing and turning, losing sleepless nights over salvation. I found out there are many believers that struggle with their salvation too. So I decided to write a book on the assurance of salvation, even if there are many topics on salvation that have been written. I decided to embark on writing a book on salvation. My inspiration to write a book on salvation came from the Holy Spirit. The title of the book was also from the Holy Spirit. I was totally guided by the Holy Spirit in writing this book, along with references from the Bible. The book is mainly about salvation. The title of the book is an attention getter. The title of the book, No Jesus, No Heaven, No Salvation, generates curiosity. As the saying goes, never judge a book by its cover.

Download or read book The Meaning of the Holy Qur'an written by and published by Kube Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2015-08-15 with total page 753 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Qur'an is the inimitable and direct Word of God. It was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad over twenty-three years, who faithfully transmitted it to humanity in the seventh century. Since then the text and meaning of the Qur'an has been preserved, word for word, exactly as it was fourteen hundred years ago. It is a Book of Guidance for all mankind with a central message of God's Oneness. Yet, it has several layers of meaning and beauty that are easily lost in translation. This splendid translation, originally prepared in 1934, aimed to help readers understand the meaning of the Qur'an but also to appreciate its beauty and catch something of the grandeur of the Arabic. This is a compact and revised edition of Abdullah Yusuf Ali's translation of The Meaning of the Holy Qur'an in modern English. It contains the complete translation of the Qur'anic text and retains essential notes of Yusuf Ali's exhaustive commentary on the Qur'an, which enables the reader to gain a better understanding of its message and helps to reveal some of the inexhaustible depth of knowledge it contains. One of the most widely-used and known translations of the Qur'an into modern English, with 472 notes and an introduction. Abdullah Yusuf Ali (1872–1953) was an Indian Islamic scholar. In 1938, Yusuf Ali's translation of the Qur'an was published in Lahore. His translation of the Qur'an is one of the most widely-known and used in the English-speaking world. He died in 1953 in London, United Kingdom.
