Download or read book NMR Imaging in Biomedicine written by P Mansfield and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1982-04-28 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NMR Imaging in Biomedicine: Advances in Magnetic Resonance discusses significant advances in NMR imaging and its application to the field of biomedicine. This book is organized into 10 chapters that cover the classification, methods, imaging regimes, and the potential use of NMR imaging in medicine. After discussing the basic theoretical ideas of NMR and its application to NMR imaging, this book presents mathematical analyses of the various NMR techniques, focusing primarily on the comparison in terms of imaging speed and data-acquisition rate. It also covers a number of practical ranges or imaging regimes in terms of sensitivity, sample size, and operating frequency. Significant topics on potential application of NMR imaging in medicine, apparatus requirements in the instrumentation of NMR imaging machines, and the principles of biomagnetic effects are discussed in other chapters. The considered biomagnetic effects are categorized into three main groups: the effects of static magnetic fields, the effects of relatively slow varying time-dependent fields, and radio-frequency magnetic fields. This book is of great value to radiologists, medical physicists, neuroradiologists, anatomists, physiologists, and postgraduate students of NMR imaging.

Book Synopsis Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Technology by : Ching-nien Chen
Download or read book Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Technology written by Ching-nien Chen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear magnetic resonance is now widely used in hospitals and research laboratories worldwide for medical purposes. Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Imaging is the first book to concentrate on how the instrumentation involved works rather than on the applications of the technique. In order to help the reader fully understand how an NMR imaging or spectroscopy system works the book takes an in-depth look at the principles behind the different components of the machine. Starting with a short history of the developments of nuclear magnetic resonance, the authors go on to describe all the different areas of instrumentation, such as the receiver and the magnet. A full explanation of the electronics and computer hardware and software appears for the first time in book form, completing this thorough view of an NMR system. Each chapter builds from a basic to a more sophisticated level of understanding and numerous illustrations help the reader to grasp the concepts. For the most part, mathematical descriptions appear at the ends of chapters, to place the emphasis of the book on the understanding of underlying principles. Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Imaging will be invaluable to all medical physicists, technicians, researchers and engineers working with NMR, containing as it does both theoretical and practical data to enable users to get the most out of their machines.

Book excerpt: Over the past decade, we have witnessed a dramatic acceleration in the application of magnetic resonance techniques within the medical sciences. Following the original experimental demonstration of the NMR phenomenon by Bloch and Purcell in 1946, emphasis was directed toward the study of physical materials: however, in the 1950's and 1960's, research was reported on the use of NMR to investigate the properties of biological materials including cell systems, excised muscle tissue and certain in vivo models. This book fully discusses this important topic.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is having an enormous liTIpact on biomedical research both at the basic science and clinical levels. In order to appreciate the elegance and power of this technology a historical perspective is in order. In 1924 Pauli suggested that hydrogen nuclei might possess a magnetic IIlOlllent. This was in fact confinned by Rabbi in 1939 who demonstrated that a beam of hydrogen molecules in the presence of a magnetic field could be mutated by radio frequency fields resonating at the Iarmor frequency. 'Ihe first successful NMR experiments in condensed matter were independently conducted in late 1945 by Purcell, Torrey and PoUnd and by Bloch, Hansen and Packard. 'Ihe Purcell group detected proton NMR in solid paraffin and the Bloch group detected proton in liquid water. Bloch and Purcell received the Nobel Prize in physics in 1952 for these observations . Until about 1952, studies of liquids and solids with broad resonance lines dominated the field of NMR. However, the reports of 3 1 P NMR chemical shifts in several corrpounds in 1949 by Khight, of 14 N resonances in several ions by Proctor and Yu in 1950, and of 1 9 F resonances in several corrpounds in 1950 by Dickinson led to the development of high resolution NMR in Itquids. since the molecular motions in liquids result in very narrow lines compared to those in solids, :much smaller chemical shifts could be detected.

Based on lectures presented at the Fourth International Conference on Magnetic Resonance Microscopy held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in October 1997, all chapters have been carefully edited and reviewed. Chemists, physicists, materials scientists, geologists, and life-scientists who wish to assess the potential of magnetic resonance imaging will find this reference a stimulating and exhaustive resource. 'This volume documents a long stride toward maturation and integration, along with the ever increasing power and subtlety of techniques and analyses, and should inspire developers and users in all areas, from medicine to geology.' Book Synopsis Physics of NMR Spectroscopy in Biology and Medicine by : B. Maraviglia
Download or read book Physics of NMR Spectroscopy in Biology and Medicine written by B. Maraviglia and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1988-09-01 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of the recent expansion of nuclear magnetic resonance in biomedicine, a number of workshops and schools have been organized to introduce the NMR principles to a wider group of biologists, radiologists, neurologists, etc. The aim of most of these courses was to provide a common vocabulary and enough information about ``pulse sequences'', relaxation times, etc. in order to facilitate the use of the various types of NMR imaging systems. However, no courses were organized for the physicists who were responsible for the origin and evolution of the ideas in this area. This Enrico Fermi school was therefore organized. The topics discussed included the theoretical interpretation and prediction of NMR signals, the study of new imaging techniques up to the building of special r.f. coils and the study of new methods for analysing NMR data in the time domain.
Book Synopsis The Chemistry of Contrast Agents in Medical Magnetic Resonance Imaging by : Andre S. Merbach

This book was released on 2013-02-19 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is one of the most important tools in clinical diagnostics and biomedical research. The number of MRI scanners operating around the world is estimated to be approximately 20,000, and the development of contrast agents, currently used in about a third of the 50 million clinical MRI examinations performed every year, has largely contributed to this significant achievement. This completely revised and extended second edition: Includes new chapters on targeted, responsive, PARACEST and nanoparticle MRI contrast agents. Covers the basic chemistries, MR physics and the most important techniques used by chemists in the characterization of MRI agents from every angle from synthesis to safety considerations. Is written for all of those involved in the development and application of contrast agents in MRI. Presented in colour, it provides readers with true representation and easy interpretation of the images. A word from the Authors: Twelve years after the first edition published, we are convinced that the chemistry of MRI agents has a bright future. By assembling all important information on the design principles and functioning of magnetic resonance imaging probes, this book intends to be a useful tool for both experts and newcomers in the field. We hope that it helps inspire further work in order to create more efficient and specific imaging probes that will allow materializing the dream of seeing even deeper and better inside the living organisms. Reviews of the First Edition: "...attempts, for the first time, to review the whole spectrum of involved chemical disciplines in this technique..."—Journal of the American Chemical Society "...well balanced in its scope and attention to detail...a valuable addition to the library of MR scientists..."—NMR in Biomedicine
