Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the Christians of Iraq trace their origin to the ancient Assyrians, some Western writers have expressed doubt about such a possibility, because history books make no mention about what happened to the ancient Assyrians, after their 612 BC defeat by the Babylonians and the Medians. This has led to the mistaken assumption that they were defeated into extinction. Contrary to the popular belief, ancient Assyrians survived their 612 BC defeat, and their descendants continued into the Christian era. As Assyrialogist H.W.F. Saggs puts it: "The destruction of the Assyrian empire did not wipe out its population. They were predominantly peasant farmers, and since Assyria contains some of the best wheat land in the Near East, descendants of the Assyrian peasants would, as opportunity permitted, build new villages over the old cities and carry on with agricultural life, remembering traditions of the former cities. After seven or eight centuries and various vicissitudes, these people became Christians." Other Assyrialogists such as Simo Parpola, Robert D. Diggs, Giorgi Tsereteli, and Iranologists like Richard Nelson Frye have come to the same conclusion. Assyrians Beyond the Fall of Nineveh presents historical and Archaeological evidences to document these facts. It provides information about the survival of the ancient Assyrians after their fall, in the cities of Ashur, Hatra, Nineveh, Harran, and other places. Evidences suggest that some aspects of the ancient Assyrians religion and culture survived into the Christian era among their descendants. The 2nd part of the book deals with the history of the Christians of Iraq, who consider themselves descendants of the ancient Assyrians, but since the 2003 invasion of that country by the United States, they have been subjected to various forms of persecutions, by the Islamists. Assyrians Beyond the Fall of Nineveh describes their extreme suffering, heroism, and achievements.

His book encompasses the archaeological practices and representations that originated in Layard's excavations, radiated outward by way of the British Museum and Layard's best-selling Nineveh and Its Remains (1849), and were then dispersed into the public domain of popular amusements. That the stones of Assyria resonated in debates far beyond the interests of religious and scientific groups is apparent in the prevalence of poetry, exhibitions, plays, and dioramas inspired by the excavation. Of particular note, correspondence involving high-ranking diplomatic personnel and museum officials demonstrates that the 'treasures' brought home to fill the British Museum served not only as signs of symbolic conquest, but also as covert means for extending Britain's political and economic influence in the Near East. Malley takes up issues of class and influence to show how the middle-class Layard's celebrity status both advanced and threatened aristocratic values. Tellingly, the excavations prompted disturbing questions about the perils of imperial rule that framed discussions of the social and political conditions which brought England to the brink of revolution in 1848 and resurfaced with a vengeance during the Crimean crisis. In the provocative conclusion of this meticulously documented and suggestive book, Malley points toward the striking parallels between the history of Britain's imperial investment in Mesopotamia and the contemporary geopolitical uses and abuses of Assyrian antiquity in post-invasion Iraq.

Book excerpt: In one of two possible ends to the Pulitzer Prize–winning thriller series, the US president faces threats from half-way around the world—and much closer. The Advise and Consent series is a landmark of political fiction, displaying a depth of insider Washington knowledge and a canvas of compelling characters that catapulted each novel to the top of the bestseller lists. At the end of the previous novel, Preserve and Protect, an assassin’s bullet rings out, and we are left to wonder who was killed. Was it the Liberal Vice President Ted Jason, or staunch Conservative Presidential Candidate Orrin Knox? The answer to that question was so large that Pulitzer Prize–winner Drury had to write two novels, each exploring the full ramifications of one of two outcomes . . . In Come Nineveh, Come Tyre, China and the Soviet Union are waiting and watching for any sign of weakness from the untried Ted Jason, survivor of the assassination attempt that took the life of Orrin Knox and propelled him into the presidency. But now that he is in this position of power, is he up to the challenge of leadership in such a time of crisis? Or will he bend too far toward appeasement, at the cost of freedom around the world? Looking at the stakes for the United States against the backdrop of war, politics, and scandal, President Jason must play winner-take-all in this game of politics.
