Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With each passing day, our world seems to drift further and further away from the God of the Bible, divine creation, and Christian belief. This societal shift toward postmodernism and secularism is not a new development, however; the expanding and intensifying revolt against the biblical God and Christianity traces its roots back to the modern philosophies of the Enlightenment and Romanticism, which have given rise to many divergent views during the past three centuries, and become even more extreme in recent postmodernism. The Greatness of God: How God Is the Foundation of All Reality, Truth, Love, Goodness, Beauty, and Purpose stands as an intellectual counterweight to the prevailing winds of a secular postmodern world. Author Charles Frank Thompson argues that the consequences of this rejection of God and divine creation have not been benign. He traces the modern revolution in detail and describes its deleterious consequences, including the loss of the ultimate basis for universal truth, knowledge, meaning, and purpose. In The Greatness of God, Thompson explores a wide range of topics, including Christian theology, metaphysical philosophy, and an analysis of modern thought and art. He examines the rich history of Christian poetry, prose, and art and takes a look at recent scientific discoveries that help us understand Christian teachings about God’s creation. He concludes with an exploration of the millennium, the eternal kingdom of God, and the spiritual state of America and Europe today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a natural follow-up to her national bestseller Front Row at the White House, the dean of the White House press corps presents a vivid and personal presidential chronicle. Currently a columnist for Hearst and a former White House bureau chief for UPI, Helen Thomas has covered an unprecedented nine presidential administrations, endearing herself with her trademark "Thank you, Mr. President," at the conclusion of White House press conferences. Thomas has amassed many wonderful tales about her personal interactions with and observations of the presidents and their families that can all be found in Thanks for the Memories, Mr. President. In nine riveting chapters -- one for each administration -- Thomas delights, informs, spins yarns, and offers opinions on the commanders in chief, from Kennedy through George W. Bush. In these accounts, Thomas reveals Kennedy's love of sparring with the press, the unique invitation LBJ extended to Hubert Humphrey to become his running mate, and Reagan's down-home ways of avoiding the press's tougher questions. This book is as entertaining and compelling as Helen Thomas herself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Constitution provides a framework for our laws, but what does it have to say about morality? Paul DeHart ferrets out that document's implicit moral assumptions as he revisits the notion that constitutions are more than merely practical institutional arrangements. In Uncovering the Constitution's Moral Design, he seeks to reveal, elaborate, and then evaluate the Constitution's normative framework to determine whether it is philosophically sound-and whether it makes moral assumptions that correspond to reality. Rejecting the standard approach of the intellectual historian, DeHart for the first time in constitutional theory applies the method of inference to the best explanation to ascertaining our Constitution's moral meaning. He distinguishes the Constitution's intention from the subjective intentions of the framers, teasing out presuppositions that the document makes about the nature of sovereignty, the common good, natural law, and natural rights. He then argues that the Constitution constrains popular sovereignty in a way that entails a real common good, transcendent of human willing and promotive of human well-being, but he points out that while the Constitution presupposes a real common good, it also implies a natural law that prescribes the common good. In critiquing previous attempts at describing and evaluating the Constitution's normative framework, DeHart demonstrates that the Constitution's moral framework corresponds largely to classical moral theory. He challenges the logical coherency of modern moral philosophy, normative positivism, and other theories that the Constitution has been argued to embody and offers a groundbreaking methodology that can be applied to uncovering the normative framework of other constitutions as well. This cogently argued study shows that the Constitution presupposes a natural law to which human law must conform, and it takes a major step in resolving current debates over the Constitution's normative framework while remaining detached from the social issues that divide today's political arena. Uncovering the Constitution's Moral Design is an original approach to the Constitution that marks a significant contribution to understanding the moral underpinnings of our form of government.

Book excerpt: Named one of Investopedia's 7 Best Economics Books of 2022 The trailblazing story of Janet Yellen, the Ruth Bader Ginsburg of economics, and her lifelong advocacy for an economics of empathy that delivers the fruits of a prosperous society to people at the bottom half of the economic ladder. When President Biden announced Janet Yellen as his choice for secretary of the treasury, it was the peak moment of a remarkable life. Not only the first woman in the more than two-century history of the office, Yellen is the first person to hold all three top economic policy jobs in the United States: chair of both the Federal Reserve and the President’s Council of Economic Advisors as well as treasury secretary. Through Owen Ullmann’s intimate portrait, we glean two remarkable aspects of Yellen’s approach to economics: first, her commitment to putting those on the bottom half of the economic ladder at the center of economic policy, and employing forward-looking ideas to use the power of government to create a more prosperous, productive life for everyone. And second, her ability to maintain humanity in a Washington policy world where fierce political combat casts others as either friend or enemy, never more so than in our current age of polarization. As Ullmann takes us through Yellen’s life and work, we clearly see her brilliance and meticulous preparation. What stands out, though, is Yellen as an icon of progress—the “Ruth Bader Ginsburg of economics”—a superb-yet-different kind of player in a cold, male-dominated profession that all too often devises policies to benefit the already well-to-do. With humility and compassion as her trademarks, we see the influence of Yellen’s father, a physician whose pay-what-you-can philosophy meant never turning anyone away. That compassion, rooted in her family life in Brooklyn, now extends across our entire country.

I hope the book will inspire and have positive impact on your realizing your potential and capability and inspire you to do something that you haven’t tried before. Each of you came across this book as I did come across Dr. Peang-Meth’s first article by chance—but it is by choice that I put his articles together into a book, and I hope that you, by choice, too, will own this book. All proceeds from the book will contribute to further promote other Khmer scholars’ writings in the social science field so that their scholarships, their visions, can be shared and used to contribute to nation-building of the Khmer motherland. Furthermore, it is my hope to augment the understanding of Khmer intergenerations—the elder Khmer scholars who survived Pol Pot’s killing fields and the young Khmer scholars who are faced with national and international challenge in the twenty-first century—both groups that need to explore and exchange what are the “Khmer” that they have in common, in interests and values, to build peace and security, promote democracy and economic growth for all Khmers in Cambodia, as well as for the people in less developed and developing countries, so they can enjoy “life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness” and realize their potential and capacity to compete within their countries, between nation-states in the regions, and in the world. Book excerpt: Cultural Writing. African American Studies. Biography and Memoir. Former Clinton diarist, Janis F. Kearney, pens a biography that is part historical narrative and part oral history. In 2001, Kearney began a journey, in search of black American's stories about the south that shaped a man and a leader such as William Jefferson Clinton; and memories about this southern enigma, from those who knew him. Over a two year span she collected conversations, memories, and stories from men and women from across the country. These conversations, and a carefully painted abstract of the pre-civil rights Arkansas that Bill Clinton called home; are the centerpieces of this biography. CONVERSATIONS includes rare and unheard voices of black Americans speaking candidly about America's 42nd President. Their memories, stories and thoughts on William J. Clinton, the man, the president and the enigma offer unique and rare pictures of Bill Clinton and his role in American and presidential history. The book include narratives from former President William J. Clinton; former Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater, U.S. Congressman John Lewis; Civil Rights leader, and NFPW Founder Dorothy Height; Baseball Great Hank Aaron; Pulitizer Prize winning biographer David Levering Lewis, and Harvard Sociologist, professor, William Julius Wilson, and many more.

Book excerpt: Once upon a time in North America, an African American named Barack Hussein Obama became President of the United States of America. The very next day after his inauguration, over 100 white new Militia's were started; the tea party was launched, and Republican so called conservatives began plotting to remove the new President by any means necessary! This book offers a crash course no "pun" intended to understand the Republican Parties ideology, philosophy, aims, and purpose. After reading America Under new Management you will have a clear understanding of the "unclear" yet destructive pledge Republicans have planned for most of America. Contrary to conservative pundits and politicians, the sole ingredients to "world peace" do not consist of conservatism, capitalism, or selfishness. Rather, a balance of conservatism, liberalism, and true equality is the winning combination for America. Today Republicans have declared all out war on anything liberal! Their radical rhetoric and code names used for the President is validating the belief that racism is stronger then ever. Final thought Since America's beginning, many of her minorities haven't felt the American pride for obvious reasons. Ironically, for the first time in American history through the election of President Barack Obama, masses of minorities were overcome with new American pride. Many of us actually never thought this day would ever happen and Republicans/Tea Partiers are hell bent on making sure it never happens again!
