Book excerpt: The underlying purpose of this paper is to analyse determining factors of responsible environmental behaviour, which serves as a formative evaluation prior to implementation This comprises the objectives of discussing the project strategy and aims, as well as analysing the target audience's individual behaviour and conditioning factors deriving from the external situation that require consideration in the design of the project's implementation strategy. A further implication is to clarify how present theories help to understand factors inhibiting or enabling responsible environmental behaviour and to provide knowledge on communication campaigns and strategy design. The key findings indicate that theory on individual behaviour change from psychology and social studies is vast, however strategy designers of environmental campaigns do notmake sufficient use of it and often develop programmes based on simplistic knowledgeattitude-practice models. On the other hand, literature on external factors determining environmental behaviour is not as advanced, besides the fact that a change of situational terms and conditions is postulated to yield great results. In general, individual and contextual factors need to be addressed to bring about the desired behaviour change, which has been considered in the strategy design of the 'Solar powered Schools for Hyderabad' project.

Book excerpt: This insightful book re-examines the concept of student voice through an exploration of children’s implicit rights to silence and non-participation. By considering what remains unspoken but is voiced through silence, this book theorises silence through the lens of power. Responding to calls for more critical approaches to children's participation under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, this unique exposition of silence ventures beyond traditional notions of voice as a defining term for justice and participation, and traditional understandings of silence as powerlessness. Instead, this book presents young people’s uses and understandings of silence at school as an instrument of power. Based on empirical research, the book reconceptualises children’s participation rights through silence. Addressing an important gap in the literature on student voice and children’s participation, this book is a valuable resource for academics, researchers, and postgraduate students in the fields of children’s human rights, childhood studies, and educational philosophy.

Book excerpt: How can we make sure that our children are learning to be creative thinkers in a world of global competition - and what does that mean for the future of education in the digital age? David Williamson Shaffer offers a fresh and powerful perspective on computer games and learning. How Computer Games Help Children Learn shows how video and computer games can help teach children to build successful futures - but only if we think in new ways about education itself. Shaffer shows how computer and video games can help students learn to think like engineers, urban planners, journalists, lawyers, and other innovative professionals, giving them the tools they need to survive in a changing world. Based on more than a decade of research in technology, game science, and education, How Computer Games Help Children Learn revolutionizes the ongoing debate about the pros and cons of digital learning.

Book excerpt: This is an autobigraphy of my life and and the development of my physics theories. It describes the three principles of Circlon Synchronicity. Photon's have mass, gravity falls up and electrons shrink. It contains complete descriptions and calculations of matter, photons and gravity. There is a step-by-step description of the evolution of the universe from before its beginning creation of 2256 atoms to the present with an exact Blackbody temperature of 2.726˚K. There are hundreds of drawings and illustrations of experiments, atoms and photons. There is a drawing of the nuclear structure of the most common isotope of each of the chemical elements. This book is based on Newtonian force and motion but it also examines the deep philosophical and psychological foundations of Quantum Mechanics and the Special and General theories of Relativity. Non-dimensional point-particle theories are replaced with the Fine Structure constant and the Bohr radius to provide the measured circlon shape and size.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the issues central to both classic and contemporary theories of cognitive development is children's goal-directed behavior, which is typically investigated in terms of strategies. This book brings together in one volume the latest research and theory regarding the development of children's strategies for a variety of cognitive tasks. Opening with a history of strategy development research and concluding with a chapter that integrates the diversity of ideas expressed by the contributors, Children's Strategies offers intervening chapters that examine strategy development for attention, analogical reasoning, mathematics, memory, reading, and problem solving in infancy. Although there is much common ground shared by the various contributors to this volume, there is no consensus concerning what exactly a strategy is. This mixture of consensus and disagreement reflects both the explosion of research in this area since the late 1960's and the complexity of the issues involved. It also reflects the fact that this is a topic that is very much alive in cognitive circles, one that will continue to stimulate research for years to come. The papers in this volume describe current research and theory concerning the development of children's strategies for handling a variety of cognitive tasks. After providing a historical view of the concept of strategies in cognitive development, the book highlights many of the issues of concern to contemporary developmental psychologists interested in strategies. The issues discussed include problem solving in infancy, memory, selective attention, mathematics, analogical reasoning, and reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isaac Newton was as strange as he was intelligent. In a few short years, he made astounding discoveries in physics, astronomy, optics, and mathematics— yet never told a soul. Though isolated, snobbish, and jealous, he almost single-handedly changed the course of scientific advancement and ushered in the Enlightenment. Newton invented the refracting telescope, explained the motion of planets and comets, discovered the multicolored nature of light, and created an entirely new field of mathematical understanding: calculus. The world might have been a very different place had Netwon's theories and observations not been coaxed out of him by his colleagues. Isaac Newton and Physics for Kids paints a rich portrait of this brilliant and complex man, including 21 hands-on projects that explore the scientific concepts Newton developed and the times in which he lived. Readers will build a simple waterwheel, create a 17thcentury plague mask, track the phases of the moon, and test Newton's Three Laws of Motion using coins, a skateboard, and a model boat they construct themselves. The text includes a time line, online resources, and reading list for further study. And through it all, readers will learn how the son of a Woolsthorpe sheep farmer grew to become the most influential physicist in history.

Our main goals in writing this book are · to present the basic concepts and principles of physics that students need to know for JEE-advanced and other related competitive exams. · to provide a balance of quantitative reasoning and conceptual understanding, with special attention to concepts that have been causing difficulties to student in understanding the concepts. · to develop students' problem-solving skills and confidence in a systematic manner. · to motivate students by integrating real-world examples that build upon their everyday experiences. What’s New? Lots! Much is new and unseen before. Here are the big four: 1. Every concept is given in student friendly language with various solved problems. The solution is provided with problem solving approach and discussion. 2. Checkpoint questions have been added to applicable sections of the text to allow students to pause and test their understanding of the concept explored within the current section. The answers to the Checkpoints are given in answer keys, at the end of the chapter, so that students can confirm their knowledge without jumping too quickly to the provided answer. 3. Special attention is given to constrained relations and block over block friction problems, so that student can easily solve them with fun. 4. To test the understanding level of students, multiple choice questions, conceptual questions, practice problems with previous years JEE Main and Advanced problems are provided at the end of the whole discussion. Number of dots indicates level of problem difficulty. Straightforward problems (basic level) are indicated by single dot (●), intermediate problems (JEE mains level) are indicated by double dots (●●), whereas challenging problems (advanced level) are indicated by thee dots (●●●). Answer keys with hints and solutions are provided at the end of the chapter.
