Book excerpt: Excerpt from Newspaper Making, Handy Reference Guide for All Newspaper Workers, and Students of Journalism, 1922 In response to requests for the republication of various articles in newspaper trade papers by the author together with "The Fundamentals of Newspaper Building" and "Newspaper Efficiency," which were originally published in pamphlet form and found wide circulation, and are now out of print, this book is produced in uniform size pages with "Newspaper Building" and "Building Newspaper Advertising" for the use of students in the Schools of Journalism and newspaper workers. In such brief treatment as is given to the many very important views regarding newspaper activity, the covering of hundreds of newspaper efforts, in a paragraph or two, it is impossible to give details which are perhaps just as important and interesting as the scheme referred to, but to present the idea is to provide food for thought to the student. Worth-while newspaper success is more largely the result of intelligent purpose than the mere publication of printed pages presenting what an editor thinks the public wants and which will sell papers. Too many of our newspapers of the past, and even of the present day, represent the output of a mere grouping of printed pages carelessly thrown together. Excerpt: ...new account firmly on its feet before seeking to split or dilute the appropriation. Since issuing the map and list of newspapers presented in this section in the form of a full newspaper page ad which has been printed in over one hundred newspapers, and the distribution of the page in connection with the other sections of this collection to 10,000 advertisers and space buyers, many hundreds of letters of commendation have been received together with information that the data had been used as the basis of national campaigns. In a nutshell this is the sort of definite information which a prospective advertiser should have before him in the preparation of a plan for a campaign. It is the sort of information that very few experts would take the trouble to prepare, for, owing to constantly changing conditions, a list prepared to-day would be changed to-morrow. With perhaps three or four exceptions every newspaper represented in the list is a sound and reputable publication conducted by men loyal to the best interests of their country and absolutely independent of political or other outside control. The omission of the names of certain newspapers of large circulation may be noted, but in leaving them off I have exercised my own privilege of not assisting them in their general policy of destruction of what is best in society, industry, and our American democracy and freedom. The advertiser can make every dollar of his investment do a full 100 cents' worth of execution, which is impossible when he is forced to buy general medium circulation much of which is in territory unrelated and distant from the field he most desires to stimulate. The manufacturer can make his advertising in daily newspapers lead directly to the shops of local dealers...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials in Journalism: A Manual in Newspaper Making for College Classes Experience has been the stern schoolmaster of most present-day newspaper men. The road to recognition and to influence has presented manifold obstacles. In earlier days the aspirant in the field of journalism, beginning as a printer's devil who inked the rollers and swept out the back office, or as a callow cub reporter who fell down on important assignments, found every stage of his progress marked with hard knocks and meager pay. It is the remembrance of what they themselves have gone through or perhaps the fresh impression of some ambitious young fellow who is working out his salvation under their very eyes, that prompts these experts in the profession to declare that the newspaper office is and can be the only proper place to learn the newspaper business. Indeed, there are many newspaper men, even today, who are so firmly convinced of the primary importance of the city editor's blue pencil as the one essential in the reporter's education that the college mndidate for reportorial work is not infrequently made the subject of pointed jests. The collegian is full of unpractical learning, old timers say, too superior in his own conceit to learn from his fellows, fond of florid adj ectives and of verbose rhetoric, not adapted for the swift gathering and writing of the news. Many of these impeach ments are unfortunately true. The newcomer is handicapped by the fact that, before he can succeed, he must unlearn not a few things ingrafted by college training. He must keep on the level of common, everyday people and must remember he is writing for a newspaper and not for fame. As the days pass his style begins to lose its grandiloquent cast and his mind grows more discrimi nating and analytical. When once the college man has learned what newspaper work requires of him he has a better chance to succeed than the untrained man at the opposite desk. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Journalism: A Complete Manual of the Best Newspaper Methods There are few things concerning which the general public is more curious, and about which it knows less, than the inside of a metropolitan newspaper office. This curiosity is at least as healthy and legitimate as that regarding the north pole, yet there have been many more polar expeditions than books about the inner workings of the modem, newspaper. As one-half of all intelligent young men and women in the United States are said to pass through a period when they imagine they would like to wield the pen, it ought to be an act of humanity to place in their hands a book that will tell just how the work of the best and largest daily papers is done. It is strange that the American newspaper should have reached its present stage of maturity and national importance without having inspired a complete popular manual of journalistic methods. There are many brief treatises of practical value on the more obvious features of newspaper work, but hitherto no attempt has been made to present a detailed practical analysis of all the writing departments of a progressive city daily. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Journalism: A Handbook of Instruction and Counsel for the Young Journalist For many pressmen the district-correspondentship has proved the first rung of the professional ladder. Sometimes the appointment is self-created. A town or district has fallen out of news connection with the great newspaper world, taking in news but giving out none, until the occurrence of some important event a startling disaster, it may be, or the visit of a high personage - fastens public attention upon it, and a man, it may be even a youth, of intelligence and enter prise supplies an account which at once makes him famous. Forthwith the leading newspapers apply for his services, and if he has push and energy he reaps a rich harvest. The incident which he utilises not only proves a windfall for himself, but serves as an introduction to a profitable newspaper connection. Or it may be that the appointment is created and made valuable, not as the result of (for the young journalist) a lucky accident, but as the outcome of intelligent watchfulness and untiring industry. The unattached district-correspondent, who is familiarly styled a penny-a-liner, keeps his eye and his mind open. He is prompt not only to make the most of a comparatively commonplace event, but in finding a market for his news. Obviously the larger the number of his clients is, the greater and more easily made becomes his income. He manifolds his paragraphs and reports if they are to be sent by post; and a few lines used by a number of papers, each paying at the rate of a penny per line, produce a fair return for the effort expended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fundamentals of Newspaper Building: A Brief Consideration of the General Business Principles In Newspaper Building and Building News paper Advertising I have presented more complete and detailed consideration of the subject by telling the why and the how of great successes of the last forty years, the most important in the develop ment of modern independent journalism. A careful reading and study of the simple truths laid down in this little guide to the best modern news paper business practices and principles will give the student or novice a broad er and more practical grasp of the business than is possessed by many long in the harness. In the past, and even today, the majority of newspaper men were and are poor and inefficient busi ness men who, while engaged in serving the public, think that they are entitled to a living; they are de void of that keen business ability to earn and merit through more effective. Service not a mere hand-to mouth living but fair compensation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
