Book Synopsis The Geographical Distribution of Animal Viral Diseases by : Stewart Hal
Download or read book The Geographical Distribution of Animal Viral Diseases written by Stewart Hal and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Geographical Distribution of Animal Viral Diseases attempts to shed some light on the global distribution of 110 different viral diseases, mainly of livestock and companion animals. The world literature was screened for 110 different viruses, and maps were prepared. These maps delineate the global distribution of pathogenic viruses based on authenticated reports from a variety of reliable sources. Four viruses were categorized as affecting more than one species to a significant degree (astrovirus, rabies, rotaviruses, and Rift Valley fever). The largest number of maps involved viruses that affect humans. Of the 28 viruses a large number were from the California encephalitis group. Ten of the 28 viruses were reported only in the Eastern Hemisphere, 14 only in the Western Hemisphere, and four were worldwide. Birds were the next most frequently affected group with the 15 viruses, followed by pigs with 14 viruses. Overall the vector-borne viruses appear to have much sharper and clear-cut geographical boundaries than the others.

Book Synopsis Footrot and Foot Abscess of Ruminants by : J. R. Egerton
Download or read book Footrot and Foot Abscess of Ruminants written by J. R. Egerton and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1989-08-31 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last two decades substantial advances have been made in research on footrot and foot abscess. The results of this research are presented in this volume. Footrot and foot abscess differ from most other communicable diseases in that they are mixed bacterial infections, which are regarded as the most economically important contagious disease of sheep in Australia today. This book is aimed at practicing veterinarians, government animal health officers and research scientists who are interested in diagnosis, treatment and prevention of economically important bacterial diseases of the ruminant hoof. It covers the microbiology of two major pathogens, Bacteroides nodosus and Fusobacterium necrophorum, and the pathology, immunology and epidemiology of footrot and foot abscess. It contains up-to-date information on various strategies currently used to control these diseases in sheep in Australia and New Zealand. Of special interest to clinicians will be sections on diagnosis which are comprehensively illustrated with pictures of various clinical entities together with differential diagnosis of other infections that localize in the digits. Developments in immunological control recently advanced by exciting opportunities to produce defined vaccines by recombinant DNA technology are also reviewed. Consideration is given to the application of biotechnology to rapid and accurate diagnosis. Sections on diagnosis are illustrated with pictures of various clinical entities together with differential diagnosis of other infections that localize in the digits. Reports achievements of great practical value Covers microbiology, pathology, immunology and epidemiology of each condition
Book Synopsis Handbook of Zoonoses, Second Edition by : George W. Beran
Download or read book Handbook of Zoonoses, Second Edition written by George W. Beran and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-08-22 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multivolume handbook presents the most authoritative and comprehensive reference work on major zoonoses of the world. The Handbook of Zoonoses covers most diseases communicable to humans, as well as those diseases common to both animals and humans. It identifies animal diseases that are host specific and reviews the effects of various human diseases on animals. Discussions address diseases that remain important public and animal health problems and the techniques that can control and prevent them. The chapters are written by internationally recognized scientists in their respective areas of disease, who work or have worked extensively in the most affected areas of the world. The emphasis for each zoonosis is on the epidemiology of the disease, the clinical syndromes and carrier states in infected animals and humans, and the most current methods for diagnosis and approaches to control. For infectious agents or biologic toxins, which may be transmitted by foods of animal origin, a strong focus is placed on food safety measures. The etiologic and therapeutic aspects of each disease important to epidemiology and control are identified.

Book Synopsis Elements of Controversy by : Barton C. Hacker
Download or read book Elements of Controversy written by Barton C. Hacker and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unforgettable congressional hearings in 1978 revealed that fallout from American nuclear weapons testing in the 1950s had overexposed hundreds of soldiers and other citizens to radiation. Faith in governmental integrity was shaken, and many people have assumed that such overexposure caused great damage. Yet important questions remain--the most controversial being: did the radiation overexposure in fact cause the cancers and birth defects for which it has been blamed? Elements of Controversy is the result of a decade of exhaustive research in AEC documentary records and the full clinical and epidemiological literature on radiation effects. More concerned with uncovering the historical story than with assigning blame, Barton Hacker concludes that every precaution was taken by the AEC to avoid harming test participants or bystanders. And, he points out, the biomedical literature suggests that these precautions worked. Yet top officials in Washington--for whom the success of nuclear weapons was of overriding importance--had asserted that testing involved no risks at all. Discrepancies between unverifiable government claims and the revelations that some actual risk was present explain the origins and angry persistence of the controversies, Hacker argues. The Department of Energy delayed publication of Hacker's study for five years, and while his controversial book is sure to draw objections from both sides of the radiation-hazard debates, it will provide a much-needed guide to understanding their polemics. Book Synopsis Comparative Neuropathology by : J. R. M. Innes
Download or read book Comparative Neuropathology written by J. R. M. Innes and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 860 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative Neuropathology focuses on documented accounts of neurologic diseases and congenital defects in animals. The text then elaborates on neurologic diseases of apes and monkeys. Discussions focus on confluent leucoencephalosis and perivascular myelosis, encephalopathies and dysenteric syndromes, meningitis, epilepsies, tuberculosis, cerebellar atrophy and experimental manganese poisoning, and choreic syndrome in baboons with corticostriate encephalitis. The publication examines the diseases of the skeletal muscle and hypophysis, including general reactions of muscles to injuries, congenital defects, muscular dystrophies, changes in muscle associated with specific diseases, and tumor. The manuscript also takes a look at inherited diseases and congenital anomalies, protozoan and bacterial infections, and demyelinating or myelinoclastic diseases. The text is a dependable reference for readers interested in comparative neuropathology.
