Why, we could sing every line of that hymn as well as you. It suits us exactly, and you sing it to our tune [laughter]. I am not going. To make a speech, for I deter mmed I would not do anything till Sunday; but my friend Dr. Cuyler has announced me, and when I saw it in the paper this morning, I thought, Here is a fix; my friend will be compromised if I do not appear, and on the other hand I have made a promise to friends that I will do nothing til] Sunday so I am not going to do anything to-night. I shan't lec ture; I shan't make a speech; 1 have resolved not to trouble my brain about what I shall say. I thought as you sung this line of that grand hymn. Book excerpt: On May 1, 1837, Episcopal bishop George Washington Doane welcomed 52 young women from eight states to his new school, St. Mary's Hall, in Burlington, New Jersey. Bishop Doane's radical innovation of giving young women the same mental training as young men motivated people from far and wide to send their daughters to this new school. Doane's visionary efforts soon turned many heads and changed many hearts, and the school grew accordingly. Today, as a coeducational school known as Doane Academy, the institution carries forward Bishop Doane's passion to push the boundaries of education. Located along the banks of the Delaware River, Doane Academy builds and instills character and a sense of duty into its students and prepares and guides them as they move "Right Onward" to change the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, covering the period 1832 to 1868, describes how the so-called "church rates" controversy contributed to the rise of a secular liberal state in England and Wales. The church rate was an ancient tax required of all ratepayers, regardless of denomination, for the upkeep of parish churches of the Church of England. This meant that Dissenters and other non-Anglicans paid for the support of the established Church. In the 1830s, however, the Dissenters determined to tolerate the situation no longer. The resulting thirty-six-year struggle became the central church-state issue of the Victorian period. Ellens further argues that church rates played a pivotal role in the shaping of Victorian liberalism. Dissenters desired a society in which church and state would be separate and religious affairs voluntary. When Gladstone decided to champion the Dissenters' "voluntaryist" cause in the 1860s, he established the relationship that would give him the solid basis of electoral strength he needed to carry out the great liberal reforms of his governments after 1868. Elegantly written and argued, this book carefully details the process of disestablishment in England and Wales and uncovers an important and little-recognized dimension to the formation of the Liberal party.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: T. Marshall Hahn, Jr., became president of Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1962. By the time he left twelve years later, the school had become auniversity. No longer a small military school that emphasized agriculture and engineering for white male undergraduates, Virginia Technical Institute and State University had become a multiracial, coeducational research university with a thriving college of arts and sciences as well as burgeoning graduate programs.Bringing together the biography of a man and the history of an institution through a dozen years of transformation, Strother and Wellenstein discuss the school's tremendous growth in sheer numbers of faculty and students, the increased enrollment of female and non-white students, and the increased emphasis on intercollegiate athletics. From VPI to State University is the story of the transformation of public higher education in the United States -- especially in the South -- in the 1960s. Much of the book relies on the recollections of the people who -- as faculty, administrators, or other leaders -- experienced, even brought about, the changes chronicled in these pages.Warren H. Strother worked with Marshall Hahn for ten years while Hahn transformed VPI into a university. A South Carolina native, Strother grew up in Virginia and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in Journalism from Northwest University. After twelve years as a journalist he worked at Virginia Tech from 1964 to 1990.

Along the way, Marion and Ford discuss the school's Baptist foundations, its coeducational merger in the late nineteenth century, a string of presidents both exceptional and misguided, and its expansion from college to university in the twenty-first century"--
