Book excerpt: The ability to move unrestrictedly is key to an infant's cognitive development. Impairment in this area can indicate an array of disorders such as autism, cerebral palsy, and genetic diseases-and in these cases, early detection and intervention is imperative. In Newborn Movement Assessment, author and movement integration specialist Michelle M. Turner offers a comprehensive guide to help determine a baby's developmental concerns, as well as provide effective treatments to stimulate the child's movement patterns through gentle touch. Through step-by-step instructions for evaluating a child's birthing process, assessing the rotation, and introducing a healthy touch, Turner shows you how to catch an infant's lack of response to movement immediately upon birth. She then offers the necessary tools to help you assess and change the baby's ability to react to stimulus, with the ultimate goal of improving the newborn's cognitive development. In the vein of What to Expect the First Year and What to Expect When the New Baby Comes Home by Heidi Murkoff and Sharon Mazel, this comprehensive guide empowers both parents and professionals alike to assess and integrate a newborn's growth.

This book was released on 2018-08-28 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The text is... a core text for any program preparing individuals for advanced practice roles in perinatal and neonatal care, and it should be a resource in every setting providing care to neonates. At all levels of practice, it serves as a convenient reference to normal parameters, common variations, and less commonly seen abnormalities.” --Susan Tucker Blackburn, RN, PhD, FAAN Author of Maternal, Fetal, and Neonatal Physiology: A Clinical Perspective From the Foreword The newly revised, 25th anniversary edition of this definitive publication on neonatal care continues to illustrate how to systematically and accurately gather assessment data and interpret results. Because even normal newborns feature a wide range of physical variation, subtle signs that indicate internal malformations or syndromes may escape notice without a proper assessment. Many problems in the neonate can be noticed early by an astute nurse, neonatal nurse practitioner, neonatal physician assistant, or physician with honed assessment skills, long before electronic monitors or other equipment can detect them. Physical Assessment of the Newborn, Sixth Edition, addresses the physical, physiologic, neurologic, and behavioral implications of a thorough assessment, and explains how healthcare providers can reduce the risks associated with the transition to extrauterine life and the neonatal period. Grounded with a scientific basis and rationale, each system assessment represents the most up-to-date clinical content. Because assessment skills are such an integral aspect of practice, many individuals take them for granted, yet all health professionals who perform newborn examinations—including nurses, neonatal and pediatric nurse practitioners, nurse-midwives, physicians, therapists, and students preparing for advanced practice roles in neonatal care—can benefit from the essential content presented in this book. New to the Sixth Edition: Provides clinical updates throughout Presents an enhanced art program Offers an all-new chapter on the perinatally substance-exposed neonate Includes an image bank and PowerPoints Key Features: Addresses all key aspects of newborn assessment Provides a well-organized evaluation of individual body systems Assists practitioners in identifying infant state, behavioral clues, and signs of pain Examines the wide range of variation among newborns of different gestational ages Provides information related to a maternal history, including antepartum testing and intrapartum monitoring Written in an easy-to-read, user-friendly style Includes continuing education exam

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When children and adults apply for disability benefits and claim that a visual impairment has limited their ability to function, the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) is required to determine their eligibility. To ensure that these determinations are made fairly and consistently, SSA has developed criteria for eligibility and a process for assessing each claimant against the criteria. Visual Impairments: Determining Eligibility for Social Security Benefits examines SSA's methods of determining disability for people with visual impairments, recommends changes that could be made now to improve the process and the outcomes, and identifies research needed to develop improved methods for the future. The report assesses tests of visual function, including visual acuity and visual fields whether visual impairments could be measured directly through visual task performance or other means of assessing disability. These other means include job analysis databases, which include information on the importance of vision to job tasks or skills, and measures of health-related quality of life, which take a person-centered approach to assessing visual function testing of infants and children, which differs in important ways from standard adult tests.

Book excerpt: A quick, non-invasive, non-intrusive and cost-effective method with high reliability and high validity is much in demand for the early detection of neurological anomalies which point to cerebral palsy and developmental deficits later on in life. Over his years as a distinguished developmental neurologist, Heinz Prechtl has devised such a method; a qualitative assessment of general movements (GMs) as a specific predictor for neurological impairments. His method is described in this book. GMs form part of a distinct pattern of movements in preterm babies, term newborns and young infants. They are complex, frequent, and usually of sufficient length. Changes in the normal quality of GMs are a reliable indicator of brain dysfunction. Includes a CD-ROM giving 15 cases selected from the book. Each is of about one minute in duration and demonstrates the different age-specific movement patterns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The aim of this study was to develop norms for the Movement Assessment of Infants (MAI) and to investigate the concurrent validity of this measure. Sixty-three full-term, low-risk, four-month-old infants were tested according to the MAI, the Bayley Motor Scale and the Wolanski Motor Development Scale. Infants were scored according to the four-month Risk Profile (RP) of the MAI and the Study Population Profile (SPP) which was developed from the behaviours of the infants on the MAI. Risk scores of the infants on the RP were significantly higher than risk scores on the SPP. This difference was attributed to the inability of the MAI to differentiate the variability of normal motor behaviour at four months of age from motor behaviour which is truly deviant from the norm." --
