It is an illustrated coffee table book for the casual reader as well as being a thorough catalog and reference work for banknote collectors, investors and historians. It covers all the varieties of paper currency which has been domiciled and used in New Zealand from 1837 to 1934. It also covers New Zealand controlled issues in foreign countries until 1963. All issues were either convertible to sterling, government debentures or legal tender. The formation and history of the 12 trading banks and one government bank are detailed. All known and obtainable note types are cataloged, illustrated, and given a rarity number. Appendices include a list of variations and indicative valuations.

Book excerpt: "This story of coins, tokens, promissory notes, bank notes, and other means of exchange that have been used in New Zealand is neither a financial history nor a catalogue. It is entertaining and instructive as it covers a wide range of activities relating to money -- from lucid descriptions of what the money of various periods was like and how it came to be issued, to problems of counterfeiting and forgery. Told too, for the first time, is the story behind the Southland Treasury notes. "From beads to banknotes" fills a gap in New Zealand historical literature and will be welcomed by both coin collectors and all those interested in the country's past."--Inside front cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 33 years since the last history of the New Zealand Reserve Bank the world has changed. New Zealanders now closely follow the Reserve Bank Governor's statements and the Bank's presence in the national life is strong. The Bank is internationally renowned for its strong mandate to eliminate inflation, having been the first reserve or central bank in the world to adopt the 'inflation targeting' approach to monetary policy. The Bank also maintains the integrity of the currency; preserves the stability of the financial system and undertakes a range of activities on behalf of the people of New Zealand. Innovation and Independence tells the fascinating story of how this small central bank took the opportunities created by the political changes of the 1980s to design a unique institutional policy framework, rather than merely adapt an off-the-shelf overseas package. The Reserve Bank's operational independence, once revolutionary, is now widely accepted internationally. Eight chapters cover the Bank's early history and the deepening crises of the 1970s and early 1980s - oil shocks, the reverse in trade terms and the 'Muldoon years'; the intellectual developments in the Bank leading up to the crucial change of government in 1984; the aftermath of the post-1984 policy revolution and the ground-breaking Reserve Bank Act 1989; inflation targeting; the removal of controls and the development of new forms of registration; and the Bank's internal cost cutting policies and withdrawal from non-core activities. There will be strong interest in this prestige, hardback, fully illustrated publication from historians, political and economic commentators, lecturers, students, public servants, public policy analysts, research institutes and, because of the Bank's role in designing and issuing back notes and coins, from numismatists. Innovation and Independence is published in association with the Ministry for Culture and heritage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In New Zealand’s France, Dr Alistair Watts investigates the origins of the New Zealand nation state from a fresh perspective — one that moves beyond the traditional bicultural view prevalent in the current New Zealand historiography. That New Zealand became British in the 1840s owes much, Dr Watts contends, to that other great colonial power of the time, France. The rich history of British antagonism towards the French was transported to New Zealand in the 1830s and 1840s as part of the British colonists’ cultural baggage, to be used in creating an old identity in a new land. Even as the British colonists sought a new beginning, this defining anti-French characteristic caused them to override the existing Māori culture with their own constructs of time and place. Leaving their signature names in the cities of Wellington and Nelson and naming their streets after Waterloo and Collingwood, the British colonisers attempted to establish a local antithesis of France through a bucolic Little Britain in the South Pacific. It was this legacy, as much as the assumed bicultural origins of modern New Zealand, that produced a Pacific country that still relies on the symbolism of the Union Jack embedded in the national flag and the totemic constitutional presence of the British Crown to maintain its national identity. This is the story of how this came about.
