There is growing realization that there is no such thing as the national labour market, instead a mosaic of local and regional markets that differ in nature, performance and regulation. Geographies of Labour Market Inequality is concerned with these multiple geographies of employment, unemployment, work and incomes, and their implications for public policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education at a Glance is the authoritative source for information on the state of education around the world. It provides data on the structure, finances and performance of education systems across OECD, accession and partner countries. More than 100 charts and tables in this publication – as well as links to much more available on the educational database – provide key information on the output of educational institutions; the impact of learning across countries; access, participation and progression in education; the financial resources invested in education; and teachers, the learning environment and the organisation of schools. The 2024 edition focuses on equity, investigating how progress through education and the associated learning and labour market outcomes are impacted by dimensions such as gender, socio-economic status, country of birth and regional location. A specific chapter is dedicated to the Sustainable Development Goal 4 on education, providing an assessment of where OECD, accession and partner countries stand in providing equal access to quality education at all levels.

This book was released on 2023-09-08 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employment informality is widespread across North Africa. This paper aims to shed light on the role played by the informal sector in labor market adjustments over the business cycle. It finds that the response of labor markets to output fluctuations is more muted in countries with higher informality levels, like the North African economies. The analysis also confirms that informal employment is countercyclical and acts as a buffer during economic downturns in countries with relatively higher informality. However, contrary to what took place in past recessions, informal employment contracted sharply during the 2020 pandemic recession in high informality economies, suggesting that it did not play its traditional countercyclical role. By contrast, employment informality tends to fall modestly or increase during economic upturns, including the post-pandemic recovery. This finding presages the persistence of a large informal sector in the post-covid era in medium- and high-informality countries.

It puts forward a flexible, expansive conceptualization of the continuum of entrepreneurial behaviour and integrates context, culture, social networks and entrepreneurship as an embedded activity. Motivated by a desire to bridge traditional academic boundaries the editors craft a heterodox perspective which interweaves strands from feminist and new institutional economics, sociology, management, finance, marketing and social policy. Contemporary themes of major significance highlighted include the importance of new technology, ethics, culture and identity, and entrepreneurship for indigenous, younger and older people as distinct groups.

The benefits to firms of hiring workers on a temporary basis are clear and generally can be reduced to their cheaper short term cost. The status of workers employed in this manner however means that they are less likely to receive the same rights as their permanent working colleagues. This impressive new book provides the first serious analysis of temporary work and its effect on the economy as well as its ramifications for workers.
