Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ferns and Fern Allies of New Zealand: With Instructions for Their Collection and Hints on Their Cultivation; With Five Plates The demand for a compendious and handy description of the Ferns of New Zealand has led to the publication of more than one little work on the subject 3 but from one cause or another these books have rapidly passed out of print, so that the collector - desirous of identifying the plants he obtains - is obliged to consult Hooker's Handbook of the New Zealand Flora, a work which is too general in its outline for his purposes, and which is already somewhat out of date. To satisfy this demand, the author has been led to prepare this small manual, in the hope that it will meet the requirements of the ease and will prove to be longer-lived and of more lasting value than its predecessors. Book excerpt: Ferns occur in great abundance in New Zealand - there are nearly 200 native species alone occurring everywhere from the coast through to the country's alpine regions. Then there are the fern allies - including clubmosses and forkferns that have an even longer fossil history than ferns. However, most of the ferns and fern allies described in this guide are the commoner species that are more likely to be seen when journeying around the New Zealand countryside. all species described are listed according to their scientific names so that their affinities with related species may be seen more easily.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This systematic treatment of the ferns and allied plants provides a modern classification of the Pteridophyta based on an assess ment of the wealth of new data published during the last few decades as well as on our own research. The accounts of the gen era include systematics, ecology, geography, spores and cytology and often other aspects of their biology. The scope of the work has involved all genera and the Old World species of those gen era represented in America. For a few American genera, that are especially complex in the Old World, it has been necessary to limit their treatment to the American representatives and this is specifically indicated in those cases. The eight American genera that do not occur in the tropics are treated in less detail. They are Camptosorus, Gymnocarpium, Matteuccia and Onoclea of North America, Arthropteris and Thyrsopteris of the Juan Fernandez Islands, Pleurosorus of southern South America, and the amphi tropical Cryptogramma. The complete generic nomenclature is included, except in a few specified cases where taxonomic complexities of the Old World elements have not been resolved. The synonyms and ac cepted names of subgeneric and sectional taxa are included only when pertinent to the generic nomenclature or to an infrageneric classification. Only the name of a publishing author is cited. There is no bibliographic purpose served by including the name of a person who was the source of, but did not validly publish, a name or epithet.
