Book Synopsis The Big Screen Comedies of Mel Brooks by : Robert Alan Crick
Download or read book The Big Screen Comedies of Mel Brooks written by Robert Alan Crick and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2009-08-11 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mel Brooks is often regarded as one of Hollywood's funniest men, thanks to such highly successful films as The Producers, Blazing Saddles, and Young Frankenstein. His films do have a tendency to turn out much like the jokes that comprise them--hit-or-miss, one minute shoot-the-moon brilliant and the next minute well short of laughs. This work provides a thorough synopsis and thematic analysis for each of his twelve films along with complete cast and production credits: The Producers (1968), The Twelve Chairs (1970), Blazing Saddles (1974), Young Frankenstein (1974), Silent Movie (1976), High Anxiety (1977), History of the World--Part 1 (1981), To Be or Not to Be (1983), Spaceballs (1987), Life Stinks (1991), Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993), and Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995).

Book Synopsis Hollywood Shot by Shot by : Norman K. Denzin
Download or read book Hollywood Shot by Shot written by Norman K. Denzin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-04 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To what extent have Hollywood feature films shaped the meanings that Americans attach to alcoholics, their families, and the alcoholic condition? To what extent has the mass culture of the movie industry itself been conceptually shaped by a broad, external societal discourse? Norman Denzin brings to his life-long study of alcoholism a searching interest in how cultural texts signify and lend themselves to interpretation within a social nexus. Both historical and diachronic in his approach, Denzin identifies five periods in the alcoholism films made between 1932 and the end of the 1980s, and offers a detailed critical reading of thirty-seven films produced during these six decades.
Book Synopsis American Film Musical Themes and Forms by : Michael Dunne
Download or read book American Film Musical Themes and Forms written by Michael Dunne and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-12-24 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The musical has been called "the most popular form of entertainment in the world." This work examines the subjects, themes, and contemporary relevance of Hollywood musicals through their long popularity, placing each show in historical and political context and analyzing it in detail. A chapter is devoted to how Golddiggers of 1933 (1933) and Stand Up and Cheer (1934) deal with the economic crises of the Depressions. Another addresses race issues by examining the prevalence of blackface minstrelsy in the 1930s and 1940s, looking at productions like Swing Time (1936) and Dixie (1943). Rock and roll culture, which started in the 1950s and threatened America with teenage sex and rebellion, is addressed through such hits as Girl Crazy (1943), Bye Bye Birdie (1963), and Grease (1978). The work also explores dance as a signifier of character, the geography of musicals (such as New York or "the South"), fantasy settings, Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, and the musical biopic (mentioning biographies of such figures as Ziegfeld, Cohan, Rogers and Hart, Cole Porter, and Jerome Kern). A later chapter discusses intertextuality in such shows as Singin' in the Rain (1952), which refers to many earlier musicals; Kiss Me Kate (1953) which refers to Taming of the Shrew; and All That Jazz (1970) which refers to the life and work of Bob Fosse. The work concludes with an examination of the continuing popularity of the musical with such hits as Moulin Rouge (2001) and Chicago (2002). Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.

Book Synopsis Volker Schlondorff's Cinema by : Hans Bernhard Moeller
Download or read book Volker Schlondorff's Cinema written by Hans Bernhard Moeller and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2012-10-31 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volker Schlöndorff’s Cinema: Adaptation, Politics and the “Movie-Appropriate” examines the work of major postwar German director Volker Schlöndorff in historical, economic, and artistic contexts. Incorporating a film-by-film, twenty-eight chapter study, Hans-Bernhard Moeller & George Lellis reveal a complexity and formal ambitiousness of Schlöndorff that is comparable to that found in Wenders, Herzog, and Fassbinder. In spite of Schlöndorff’s successes with films like The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum and The Tin Drum, as well as his acclaimed work in the U.S. with Death of a Salesman, Gathering of Old Men and The Handmaid’s Tale, this is the first in-depth critical study of the filmmaker’s career. In the context of film and television history, this book relates Schlöndorff’s oeuvre to the New German Cinema, to his formative years as a student and production assistant in France, and to his roots in the Weimar cinema’s tradition. It reveals how Schlöndorff entered into the German film production system in the 1960s, how he came to rely on German public television in the 1970s, and then moved to the international and American financing in the 1980s, attempting to redevelop the Babelsberg studios in a 1990s post-Wall Germany while continuing to make his own films into the 21st century. The book captures how Schlöndorff’s nearly half century of ongoing creativity and productivity ties together. The authors analyze the artistry of each Schlöndorff movie arguing that his output as a whole embodies a provocative and sometimes contradictory set of balances. Schlöndorff combines commercial interest with significant artistic ambition, blends the kinesthetic pleasures of moving images with the seriousness of fine literature, links the intensity of individualized personal experience to an awareness of broader political issues, and represents a specifically German sensibility even as he reaches out to the international audiences. The authors demonstrate the cyclical recurrence in his cinema of certain themes (individual and collective rebellion, fascist suppression, masochistic love), narrative patterns (the Western, the thriller, the subjective mood piece), and stylistic approaches (Brechtian Verfremdung, the creation of careful leitmotif structures, the use of the grotesque). In over thirty years of filmmaking, Schlöndorff has produced a remarkable unified body of work that deserves the attention of a book-length study. Authors Hans-Bernhard Moeller and George Lellis offer the first such study of its kind. Volker Schlöndorff’s Cinema: Adaptation, Politics, and the “Movie-Appropriate” features forty-one illustrations.
Download or read book Roy Scheider written by Diane C. Kachmar and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over his 30-plus-year acting career, Roy Scheider has redefined America's idea of a leading man, thanks to his talent for playing an urban everyman that audiences relate to and root for, despite his flaws and failures. He rose to fame in the early 1970s in the Oscar-winning films Klute and The French Connection (his first Oscar nomination). Roy garnered more critical acclaim in Jaws and Marathon Man, as well as a second Oscar nomination for All That Jazz. Scheider's life and career are chronicled in this work. Beginning with his childhood in New Jersey, which included a somewhat rocky relationship with his father and three bouts of rheumatic fever, it then traces his development from a community theater actor to a world-renowned movie star. It covers his most recent activities, including work in the Golden Globe-winning RKO 281, released in 2000, and the Shakespearean drama King of Texas, released in 2002. Includes a complete filmography.
