Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Jewish community of 1769 to that of 1917 is a far cry--the one resident of colonial times to the lawyers, doctors, bankers, artists, merchant princes and artisans of today. Success to a phenomenal degree has been theirs. What they accomplished has been by virtue of their own brain and good right arm. To penal and eleemosynary institutions they were practically strangers. They have, it is true, figured in the criminal courts--as the brightest of lawyers ; their escutcheons are often crossed with the bar sinister of a rope--it is not pendant from a tree, but a peddler's pack. Of all the successful Jews In Richmond today there is not one of whom it can be truthfully said that he owes aught of it to "pull." Theirs has been the conquest of "push." The remarkable part is all this has been achieved by stress of energy alone. They came to this country with only their good names, their indomitable wills, with the single purpose of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness," and the right to practice their ancient faith as their consciences dictated. -- Pg. Book excerpt: Original, action-oriented humanist practices for interpreting and intervening in the city: a new methodology at the intersection of the humanities, design, and urban studies. Urban humanities is an emerging field at the intersection of the humanities, urban planning, and design. It offers a new approach not only for understanding cities in a global context but for intervening in them, interpreting their histories, engaging with them in the present, and speculating about their futures. This book introduces both the theory and practice of urban humanities, tracing the evolution of the concept, presenting methods and practices with a wide range of research applications, describing changes in teaching and curricula, and offering case studies of urban humanities practices in the field. Urban humanities views the city through a lens of spatial justice, and its inquiries are centered on the microsettings of everyday life. The book's case studies report on real-world projects in mega-cities in the Pacific Rim—Tokyo, Shanghai, Mexico City, and Los Angeles—with several projects described in detail, including playful spaces for children in car-oriented Mexico City, a commons in a Tokyo neighborhood, and a rolling story-telling box to promote “literary justice” in Los Angeles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W.E.B. DuBois immortalized Philadelphia's Black Seventh Ward neighborhood, one of America's oldest urban black communities, in his 1899 sociological study The Philadelphia Negro. In the century after DuBois's study, however, the district has been transformed into a largely white upper middle class neighborhood. Black Citymakers revisits the Black Seventh Ward, documenting a century of banking and tenement collapses, housing activism, black-led anti-urban renewal mobilization, and post-Civil Rights political change from the perspective of the Black Seventh Warders. Drawing on historical, political, and sociological research, Marcus Hunter argues that black Philadelphians were by no means mere casualties of the large scale social and political changes that altered urban dynamics across the nation after World War II. Instead, Hunter shows that black Americans framed their own understandings of urban social change, forging dynamic inter- and intra-racial alliances that allowed them to shape their own migration from the old Black Seventh Ward to emergent black urban enclaves throughout Philadelphia. These Philadelphians were not victims forced from their homes - they were citymakers and agents of urban change. Black Citymakers explores a century of socioeconomic, cultural, and political history in the Black Seventh Ward, creating a new understanding of the political agency of black residents, leaders and activists in twentieth century urban change.

Book excerpt: Programming and Problem Solving with Ada 95 provides a solid introduction to programming while introducing the capabilities of Ada 95 and its syntax without overwhelming the student. The book focuses on the development of good programming habits. This text offers superior pedagogy that has long defined computer science education, including problem solving case studies, testing and debugging sections, quick checks, exam preparation, programming warm-up exercises, and programming problems. The extensive coverage of material in such a student-friendly resource means that more rigor, more theory, greater use of abstraction and modeling, and the earlier application of software engineering principles can be employed.
