Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Words Self-Defined Tms book is both less and more than a dictionary. It is less than a dictionary in containing not one formal definition; it is more than a dictionary in its attempt to quote only such sentences as make the meaning of each word stand self-revealed. It is one thing to memorize a definition, quite another to add the word defined at once to your vocabulary of actual use. The sentences here culled will, I believe, enable the reader to take each word or phrase by its handle and to use it, if he so desires. If he does not care to make personal use of these words, it should be remembered that most of them have found their way since 1914 into so many short stories, sketches, novels, news columns, and magazine contributions that a reading knowledge of them is essential to a proper understand ing of current writing. They are not all new words, of course; but, when not new, they have at least been called into newness of service or represent new direc tions of popular interest or scientific research. They have, therefore, it is hoped, a value as material of history apart from their service to the student of language or their more immediate service to the general reader. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Word Lists of New Normal Readers, Given in the Order in Which the Words First Occur in the Lessons This little book is designed to accompany Raub's New Normal Readers. It contains the words found in those Readers, given in the order in which those words first occur in the series. The diacritical marks used are those of Webster's International Dictionary. Italics are used throughout the book to indicate silent letters. Both italics and diacritical marks are used through out the First Reader and the Second Reader to indicate the pronunciation; throughout the remaining lessons these marks are used chiefly in the accented syllables only. A few supplementary lists of words pronounced similarly but spelled differently are given at the close of the lessons from the respective readers. Practice on these may be given in sentence construction in such a way as to prove both interesting and instructive. In general, sentence construction, embracing the words given, may be made a valuable language exercise. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Easy Road to Reading: Primer The subject matter in a beginning text book in reading should touch the child personally and be in keeping with his natural activities if it is to be of value in teaching him to read. It should appear for him in the form of action, rhythm, stories, plays, and games if the symbols of reading are to convey meaning. This Primer has been compiled with the foregoing in mind, the purpose being to offer an easy and natural course in reading for beginners. The vocabulary and subject matter have accordingly been chosen with special reference to the natural activities of children. Children are actors by nature and they therefore perform with pleasure the actions which words suggest. That which a child does involving self-activity makes a deep impression; thus the true meaning of words can be easily impressed upon him. It is, therefore, important that there shall be included in the early lessons a good list of action words which shall form the basis of interesting and thought-inspiring reading lessons and which can be easily demonstrated in class-room practice. The first nine lessons of The Easy Road to Reading Primer consist of simple reading matter compiled from a desirable list of action words. All these early lessons can be dramatized and the meaning of the words can thus be easily taught by having the children perform the actions suggested by them. Lessons 16-32 consist of interesting reading in which the new words are introduced in simple rhymes made up in part from the action words previously learned. These rhymes serve to fix the meaning of the words and sentences in the lessons and make the reading matter more interesting. Lessons 32-38 consist of short rhymes from that classic of childhood literature, Mother Goose. The lessons preserve the integrity of the rhymes, yet introduce a sufficient number of other sentences to emphasize the new words and fix by repetition those already presented. Lessons 38-68 are on nature. This section will be read in the fall of the year when the outside world is full of beauty and attractiveness. Book excerpt: The Lost Words by composer James Burton takes its inspiration and text from the award-winning 'cultural phenomenon' and book of the same name by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris: a book that was, in turn, a creative response to the removal of everyday nature words like acorn, newt and otter from a new edition of a widely used children's dictionary. Both the book and Burton's 32-minute work, which is written in 12 short movements for upper-voice choir in up to 3 voice parts (with either orchestral or piano accompaniment), celebrates each lost word with a beautiful poem or 'spell', magically brought to life in Burton's music. At its heart, the work delivers a powerful message about the need to close the gap between childhood and the natural world. Burton's piece was co-commissioned by the Hallé Concerts Society for the Hallé Children's Choir and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The piano accompaniment version was premiered at the Tanglewood Festival in 2019 by the Boston Symphony Children's Choir, of which Burton is founder and director. The Hallé Children's Choir will premiere the orchestral version of the full work in Manchester, UK, post-pandemic. Vocal Score Co-commission by Boston Symphony and Hallé Concerts Society for their respective Children's Choirs. Two versions - with orchestral or with piano accompaniment. The vocal score is the same for both versions. James Burton is a composer but also a conductor. He is conductor of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and choral director of the Boston Symphony. The book The Lost Words, exquisitely designed, has won multiple awards and is an international best-seller. The vocal score includes Jackie Morris's beautiful imagery in its cover design.
