Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Signal Processing for Neuroscientists introduces analysis techniques primarily aimed at neuroscientists and biomedical engineering students with a reasonable but modest background in mathematics, physics, and computer programming. The focus of this text is on what can be considered the 'golden trio' in the signal processing field: averaging, Fourier analysis, and filtering. Techniques such as convolution, correlation, coherence, and wavelet analysis are considered in the context of time and frequency domain analysis. The whole spectrum of signal analysis is covered, ranging from data acquisition to data processing; and from the mathematical background of the analysis to the practical application of processing algorithms. Overall, the approach to the mathematics is informal with a focus on basic understanding of the methods and their interrelationships rather than detailed proofs or derivations. One of the principle goals is to provide the reader with the background required to understand the principles of commercially available analyses software, and to allow him/her to construct his/her own analysis tools in an environment such as MATLAB®. - Multiple color illustrations are integrated in the text - Includes an introduction to biomedical signals, noise characteristics, and recording techniques - Basics and background for more advanced topics can be found in extensive notes and appendices - A Companion Website hosts the MATLAB scripts and several data files: http://www.elsevierdirect.com/companion.jsp?ISBN=9780123708670

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Signal analysis and signal treatment are integral parts of all types of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. In the last ten years, much has been achieved in the development of dimensional spectra. At the same time new NMR techniques such as NMR Imaging and multidimensional spectroscopy have appeared, requiring entirely new methods of signal analysis. Up until now, most NMR texts and reference books limited their presentation of signal processing to a short introduction to the principles of the Fourier Transform, signal convolution, apodisation and noise reduction. To understand the mathematics of the newer signal processing techniques, it was necessary to go back to the primary references in NMR, chemometrics and mathematics journals. The objective of this book is to fill this void by presenting, in a single volume, both the theory and applications of most of these new techniques to Time-Domain, Frequency-Domain and Space-Domain NMR signals. Details are provided on many of the algorithms used and a companion CD-ROM is also included which contains some of the computer programs, either as source code or in executable form. Although it is aimed primarily at NMR users in the medical, industrial and academic fields, it should also interest chemometricians and programmers working with other techniques.

Book excerpt: This lively and accessible book describes the theory and applications of Hilbert spaces and also presents the history of the subject to reveal the ideas behind theorems and the human struggle that led to them. The authors begin by establishing the concept of 'countably infinite', which is central to the proper understanding of separable Hilbert spaces. Fundamental ideas such as convergence, completeness and dense sets are first demonstrated through simple familiar examples and then formalised. Having addressed fundamental topics in Hilbert spaces, the authors then go on to cover the theory of bounded, compact and integral operators at an advanced but accessible level. Finally, the theory is put into action, considering signal processing on the unit sphere, as well as reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. The text is interspersed with historical comments about central figures in the development of the theory, which helps bring the subject to life.

Book excerpt: The use of the wavelet transform to analyze the behaviour of the complex systems from various fields started to be widely recognized and applied successfully during the last few decades. In this book some advances in wavelet theory and their applications in engineering, physics and technology are presented. The applications were carefully selected and grouped in five main sections - Signal Processing, Electrical Systems, Fault Diagnosis and Monitoring, Image Processing and Applications in Engineering. One of the key features of this book is that the wavelet concepts have been described from a point of view that is familiar to researchers from various branches of science and engineering. The content of the book is accessible to a large number of readers.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive introduction to innovative methods in the field of biomedical signal analysis, covering both theory and practice. Biomedical signal analysis has become one of the most important visualization and interpretation methods in biology and medicine. Many new and powerful instruments for detecting, storing, transmitting, analyzing, and displaying images have been developed in recent years, allowing scientists and physicians to obtain quantitative measurements to support scientific hypotheses and medical diagnoses. This book offers an overview of a range of proven and new methods, discussing both theoretical and practical aspects of biomedical signal analysis and interpretation. After an introduction to the topic and a survey of several processing and imaging techniques, the book describes a broad range of methods, including continuous and discrete Fourier transforms, independent component analysis (ICA), dependent component analysis, neural networks, and fuzzy logic methods. The book then discusses applications of these theoretical tools to practical problems in everyday biosignal processing, considering such subjects as exploratory data analysis and low-frequency connectivity analysis in fMRI, MRI signal processing including lesion detection in breast MRI, dynamic cerebral contrast-enhanced perfusion MRI, skin lesion classification, and microscopic slice image processing and automatic labeling. Biomedical Signal Analysis can be used as a text or professional reference. Part I, on methods, forms a self-contained text, with exercises and other learning aids, for upper-level undergraduate or graduate-level students. Researchers or graduate students in systems biology, genomic signal processing, and computer-assisted radiology will find both parts I and II (on applications) a valuable handbook.
