Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Emancipation Proclamation, widely remembered as the heroic act that ended slavery, in fact freed slaves only in states in the rebellious South. True emancipation was accomplished over a longer period and by several means. Essays by eight distinguished contributors consider aspects of the president's decision making, as well as events beyond Washington, offering new insights on the consequences and legacies of freedom, the engagement of black Americans in their liberation, and the issues of citizenship and rights that were not decided by Lincoln's document. The essays portray emancipation as a product of many hands, best understood by considering all the actors, the place, and the time. The contributors are William A. Blair, Richard Carwardine, Paul Finkelman, Louis Gerteis, Steven Hahn, Stephanie McCurry, Mark E. Neely Jr., Michael Vorenberg, and Karen Fisher Younger.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luke is here presented as contributing to New Testament Christology through his treatment of Old Testament Christological texts. This redaction-critical study argues that Luke's use of the Old Testament is not so much a 'proof from prophecy' as a 'proclamation' that draws both upon prophecies and upon patterns. This proclamation as it is developed in Luke-Acts serves to turn the reader's attention from seeing Jesus as Messiah to seeing him eventually as Lord.

Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Book excerpt: One of the nation's foremost Lincoln scholars offers an authoritative consideration of the document that represents the most far-reaching accomplishment of our greatest president. No single official paper in American history changed the lives of as many Americans as Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. But no American document has been held up to greater suspicion. Its bland and lawyerlike language is unfavorably compared to the soaring eloquence of the Gettysburg Address and the Second Inaugural; its effectiveness in freeing the slaves has been dismissed as a legal illusion. And for some African-Americans the Proclamation raises doubts about Lincoln himself. Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation dispels the myths and mistakes surrounding the Emancipation Proclamation and skillfully reconstructs how America's greatest president wrote the greatest American proclamation of freedom.

Book excerpt: This is a textbook on Christology for the undergraduate, graduate, and seminary market written by eleven distinguished North American Roman Catholic theologians. The structure of the book and of the individual essays follows a pattern of recovery (analysis of the tradition), critique (consideration of special problems), and reconstruction (distinctive Christologies in the contemporary American context). Part I, devoted to historical recovery, treats Jesus of Nazareth and the significance of historical Jesus research for Christology today; Christological developments resulting in the conciliar definitions of Nicaea and Chalcedon; and diverse conceptions of Christ's redemption in the early and medieval church. Part II treats four problems in modern debate: religious pluralism and Christian exclusivist claims; theological anti-Semitism embedded in Christological formulations; legitimation of male privilege via appeals to the masculinity of Jesus and Christ's headship of the church; the use of the Christ symbol to legitimate colonialism and racial exploitation. Finally, Part III offers two examples of contemporary Christologies of social transformation: mujerista Christology and black Christology. Contributors: Lisa Sowle Cahill, Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza, Roger Haight, Ada Maria Isasi-Diaz, Robert Lassalle-Klein, William Loewe, John Pawlikowski, Jamie Phelps, Rosemary Radford Ruether, Gerard Sloyan, and Tatha Wiley.

Book excerpt: While many historians have dealt with the Emancipation Proclamation as a phase or an aspect of the Civil War, few have given more than scant attention to the evolution of the document in the mind of Lincoln, the circumstances and conditions that led to its writing, its impact on the course of the war, and its significance for later generations. Professor John Hope Franklin's answer to this need, first published in 1963, is available again for the first time in many years. This edition includes a new preface, photo essay, and a reproduction of the 1863 handwritten draft of the Emancipation Proclamation, making it an ideal supplementary text for U.S. and African American survey courses as well as for more specialized courses on the Civil War and Reconstruction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Emancipation Proclamation is the most important document of arguably the greatest president in U.S. history. Now, Edna Greene Medford, Frank J. Williams, and Harold Holzer -- eminent experts in their fields -- remember, analyze, and interpret the Emancipation Proclamation in three distinct respects: the influence of and impact upon African Americans; the legal, political, and military exigencies; and the role pictorial images played in establishing the document in public memory. The result is a carefully balanced yet provocative study that views the proclamation and its author from the perspective of fellow Republicans, antiwar Democrats, the press, the military, the enslaved, free blacks, and the antislavery white establishment, as well as the artists, publishers, sculptors, and their patrons who sought to enshrine Abraham Lincoln and his decree of freedom in iconography.Medford places African Americans, the people most affected by Lincoln's edict, at the center of the drama rather than at the periphery, as previous studies have done. She argues that blacks interpreted the proclamation much more broadly than Lincoln intended it, and during the postwar years and into the twentieth century they became disillusioned by the broken promise of equality and the realities of discrimination, violence, and economic dependence. Williams points out the obstacles Lincoln overcame in finding a way to confiscate property -- enslaved humans -- without violating the Constitution. He suggests that the president solidified his reputation as a legal and political genius by issuing the proclamation as Commander-in-Chief, thus taking the property under the pretext of military necessity. Holzer explores how it was only after Lincoln's assassination that the Emancipation Proclamation became an acceptable subject for pictorial celebration. Even then, it was the image of the martyr-president as the great emancipator that resonated in public memory, while any reference to those African Americans most affected by the proclamation was stripped away. This multilayered treatment reveals that the proclamation remains a singularly brave and bold act -- brilliantly calculated to maintain the viability of the Union during wartime, deeply dependent on the enlightened voices of Lincoln's contemporaries, and owing a major debt in history to the image-makers who quickly and indelibly preserved it.

Book excerpt: "Exult, let them exult, the hosts of heaven, exult, let Angel ministers of God exult, let the trumpet of salvation sound aloud our mighty King's triumph! Be glad, let earth be glad, as glory floods her, ablaze with light from her eternal King, let al corners of the earth be glad, knowing an end to gloom and darkness."" "The Easter Proclamation," or "Exsultet," is the triumphant song of praise that proclaims "Christ is Risen!" during the Easter Vigil in the Roman Rite. Acclaimed iconographer Charles Rohrbacher has illustrated a one-of-a-kind ritual book: "The Easter Proclamation" ("Exsultet"). This CD presents the vivid, scripturally grounded images of his unique work for projection in the sanctuary and use in prayer. The icons of "The Easter Proclamation" draw on the vivid and poetic texts of the ancient hymn. They depict Holy Mother Church, Moses leading the Israelites through the Red Sea, the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden, Christ the Morning Star and other images from the great story of salvation as proclaimed in this sacred moment. Charles Rohrbacher reverently depicts each of these scenes using classical iconography techniques. Each unique picture draws on the long tradition of Christian icon writing.
