Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses policy strategies for the effective management of natural resources in Africa within the context of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). While natural resource wealth has the potential to lift many out of poverty, sustain economic growth, and foster political stability, it does not guarantee these benefits. The absolute levels of human development in many resource-rich countries remain low, despite their apparent wealth. The challenge is to adopt policies that better harness the potential of natural resources, not only as an opportunity for development, but also to foster policies and institutional innovations that manage resource wealth equitably and boost human capital. To this end, this volume highlights key opportunities and solutions for harnessing natural resources for sustained economic development and explain how such approaches should be incorporated into the SDG agenda. These opportunities are communicated in the form of policy recommendations that in some cases, are country specific but can (and should) be adapted by individual African countries where applicable. With a broad perspective supplied by a diverse group of authors, this book will be useful for graduate students and academicians studying Africa, development economics, economic policy, and resource management, as well as policy makers, NGOs, and IGOs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book examines the dynamics of natural resource conflicts in Africa, and explores the different governance approaches for securing sustainable peace. One of the most prominent challenges facing Africa today is the consequences of natural resource extraction. While these resources hold the potential for economic transformation across Africa, their extraction also comes with a range of environmental, social, and economic consequences, including issues related to governance. This book assembles a unique cohort of peacebuilding, environmental justice, and sustainable development scholars and practitioners from Africa and beyond to examine the dynamics of natural resource conflict and explore the governance approaches that offer pathways for sustainable peace in Africa. Drawing on case studies and empirical lessons from the Horn of Africa, Southern Africa, West Africa, East Africa, and the Central Sahel region, along with the African Union, the multidisciplinary contributors offer fresh insights into the nature of natural resource conflict in Africa, delve deeper into the complexities of natural resource governance, and highlight the interplay between resource governance and sustainable peace. By shedding light on Africa's experiences and vulnerabilities but also the challenges of natural resource governance, this book fills a crucial gap in understanding the connection between natural resource governance, conflict, and pathways for sustainable peace in Africa. Drawing on a range of disciplinary perspectives, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of natural resource governance, peace and conflict studies, environmental policy and justice, sustainable development, security studies and African studies more widely"--

Book excerpt: This report analyses the factors which motivate land use by rural populations and provides a context for any policy or strategy which addresses natural resource conservation in the Sahel. The author suggest that production systems in the Sahel have reached or even exceeded their capacity to respond to the needs of a growing population and further that development aid has only had a negligible impact on the trend to over exploit. It offers a different perspective on issues concerning the Sahel.

Download or read book Platforms for Sustainable Natural Resource Management written by Constant Dangbégnon and published by Kit Pub. This book was released on 2001 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benin, Burkina Faso and other countries in West Africa have faced serious environmental degradation during the last three decades. After the droughts of the 1970s and 1980s, it became clear that resource depletion and human hardship and suffering are inextricably intertwined. The magnitude of the problem is so great that conventional public means and services no longer suffice to prevent further degradation. This study therefore proposes a new approach to resource management. By looking at resource management problems in six sites in Benin and Burkina Faso, it shows how crises in ecosystems are triggers of social learning by stakeholders and intervening agencies. The authors argue that facilitation of change goes beyond the transfer of technology, advisory work, information support and extension. Resource problems in situations of conflict and interdependence can be solved only through collective action and platform development. Facilitation may help, but requires development professionals to play new roles in conflict resolution, mediation and negotiation. Learning from the six case studies in such different ecosystems as a lake, rangeland, watershed and forest, this booklet clarifies the conditions for successful collective action and effective platforms for resource management.
