And as we say in New Orleans, Laissez les bons temps rouler! KEEPING SECRETS How do you surprise a psychic? When Max Lamoreaux proposed to the love of his life, she happily said yes. But months later, every time he broaches the subject of setting the date, Theresa gets cold feet and won't commit. Taking matters into his own hands, and with the help of his family, Max hatches a secret solution. Sometimes being a psychic reveals things she'd rather not know. Theresa Crawford loves Max, but her visions show deadly consequences if she weds him. How can she avoid marrying him without losing him forever? When two strong-willed lovers start keeping secrets, it sets them and everyone they love on a collision course with dangerous consequences. SEX, LIES AND APPLE PIES Wendy Cunningham, the Princess of Pastries, has been recruited into being a judge on the National Bake-Off Championship. When the ex-flame she left behind turns out to be a fellow judge, she decides to make the best of the situation, because she needs the publicity to open her newest high-end bakery. Slade Coleman is the hottest celebrity chef on the foodie scene, and he's not above making the most of his time in the spotlight. When the "Culinary Cowboy" gets recruited to judge on the next sure-to-be-a-hit baking show, the opportunity is too good to turn down. Nobody knows he has his own reasons for coming to South Florida. When The Princess sees The Cowboy, sparks fly and it isn't long before passion ignites. But something's going on behind the scenes, and it's up to Wendy and Slade to root out the bad apple before somebody gets hurt—or worse. DEADLY JUSTICE A quest for justice… After a devastating betrayal, ex-DEA agent Samuel "The Ghost" Carpenter devotes his life to searching for the person who cost him not only his job but nearly his life. When he discovers a link between the man he's hunting and a beautiful executive assistant, he realizes the path to his target is seduction—a task he's all too eager to undertake, since he can't seem to resist the alluring beauty. …turns into a dangerous seduction. Andrea Kirkland can't fathom the sudden interest rich and powerful Samuel Carpenter's showing, but she's not stupid. He's got a deeply-hidden agenda and she's a means to an end. Except, she has secrets of her own, and despite their instantaneous chemistry, she's not above using Carpenter to further her own vendetta. On a whirlwind journey from Dallas to New Orleans, passion explodes between them. But when a murderer strikes, Carpenter must choose between his mission of vengeance or face losing the woman he loves to a vindictive madman hellbent on revenge. WICKED OBSESSION When an old danger surfaces, everything in Sheri Vernon’s life turns upside down. She doesn’t know who she can trust—except former fiancé, Nate Blackwell, the man whose heart she broke when she walked away. A key member of Carpenter Security’s elite team, Nate Blackwell loves his new home in New Orleans, but his ex is the last person he expects to find on his doorstep needing help. Seeing her again stirs up feelings he thought long buried, but he can’t turn his back on her. Embers of passion reignite and fuel the flames of obsession in a madman. Can Nate keep the woman he still loves safe, or lose her forever to another’s twisted desires?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the intertwined histories of Saint-Louis, Senegal, and New Orleans, Louisiana. Although separated by an ocean, both cities were founded during the early French imperial expansion of the Atlantic world. Both became important port cities of their own continents, the Atlantic world as a whole, and the African diaspora. The slave trade not only played a crucial role in the demographic and economic growth of Saint-Louis and New Orleans, but also directly connected the two cities. The Company of the Indies ran the Senegambia slave-trading posts and the Mississippi colony simultaneously from 1719 to 1731. By examining the linked histories of these cities over the longue durée, this edited collection shows the crucial role they played in integrating the peoples of the Atlantic world. The essays also illustrate how the interplay of imperialism, colonialism, and slaving that defined the early Atlantic world operated and evolved differently on both sides of the ocean. The chapters in part one, “Negotiating Slavery and Freedom,” highlight the centrality of the institution of slavery in the urban societies of Saint-Louis and New Orleans from their foundation to the second half of the nineteenth century. Part two, “Elusive Citizenship,” explores how the notions of nationality, citizenship, and subjecthood—as well as the rights or lack of rights associated with them—were mobilized, manipulated, or negotiated at key moments in the history of each city. Part three, “Mythic Persistence,” examines the construction, reproduction, and transformation of myths and popular imagination in the colonial and postcolonial cities. It is here, in the imagined past, that New Orleans and Saint-Louis most clearly mirror one another. The essays in this section offer two examples of how historical realities are simplified, distorted, or obliterated to minimize the violence of the cities’ common slave and colonial past in order to promote a romanticized present. With editors from three continents and contributors from around the world, this work is truly an international collaboration.

Book excerpt: This new updated edition is not only hard cover for long life, but it contains an additional 25 pages of revelations from the author including documents from the FBI, CIA, CDC, and NOPD, plus the actual crime scene photos of the Mary Sherman murder. You'll see why we say this is the "Hottest cold case in America." The 1964 murder of a nationally known cancer researcher sets the stage for this gripping exposÉ of medical professionals enmeshed in covert government operations over the course of three decades. Following a trail of police records, FBI files, cancer statistics, and medical journals, this revealing book presents evidence of a web of medical secret-keeping that began with the handling of evidence in the JFK assassination and continued apace, sweeping doctors into cover-ups of cancer outbreaks, contaminated polio vaccine, the arrival of the AIDS virus, and biological weapon research using infected monkeys.

Miller has delved into previously unused or overlooked papers housed in New Orleans to reconstruct a chain of events that set the Crescent City, in many ways, at the center of the Texian fight for independence. Not only did Now Orleans business interests send money and men to Texas in exchange for promises of land, but they also provided newspaper coverage that set the scene for later American annexation of the young republic."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: As a musician who grew up in New Orleans, and later worked in New York with the major swing orchestras of Lucky Millinder and Cab Calloway, Barker is uniquely placed to give an authoritative but personal view of jazz history. In this book he discusses his life in music, from the children's 'spasm' bands of the seventh ward of New Orleans, through the experience of brass bands and jazz funerals involving his grandfather, Isidore Barbarin, to his early days on the road with the blues singer Little Brother Montgomery. Later he goes on to discuss New York, and the jazz scene he found there in 1930. His work with Jelly Roll Morton, as well as the lesser-known bands of Fess Williams and Albert Nicholas, is covered before a full account of his years with Millinder, Benny Carter and Calloway, including a description of Dizzy Gillespie's impact on jazz, is given. The final chapters discuss Barker's career from the late 1940s. Starting with the New York dixieland scene at Ryan's and Condon's he talks of his work with Wilbur de Paris, James P. Johnson and This is Jazz, before discussing his return to New Orleans and New Orleans Jazz Museum. A collection of Barker's photographs,
