Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Notes for Bible Readings New Notes is not in any sense a reprint of the well-known Notes and Suggestions for Bible Readings, edited by S. R. Briggs and J. H. Elliott; it is an entirely new collection; still it may be said to contain many of the same features as in the previous volume, which has now reached a sale of during twelve years, being published in the United States, Great Britain and Canada; this great and continuous demand seems to be an estimate of, and certainly a testimony to, the value of such a book. Our father, the late Mr. Sfr. Briggs, had looked forward to publishing such a work, but the Lord saw his tired servant needed rest and called him home, leaving others to complete the work begun. A large proportion of the Readings in this present vol ume have been selected from that which he left behind as a result of over twenty years of Bible study. These may be known by not having the name of the author at their close. Selections have also been made from many noted students of the Word, some of which Readings have been specially prepared by the authors, and are published now for the first time. The appli cation of Truth is to some extent so general and universal that e. G. Subjects specially suitable for the unsaved very often cannot but apply somewhat to the Believer, and vice versa. For this reason the index, with which exceptional care has been taken to make it a valuable help, must be depended on rather than on the divisional arrangement; however, the following general outline of Readings, we trust will be found to be somewhat suggestive. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes, Critical and Practical, on the Book of Genesis, Vol. 1 of 2: Designed as a General Help to Biblical Reading and Instruction A very slight inspection of the pages of the present work will disclose to the reader its general character, and enable him to judge how far it is likely to supply an existing desideratum. Little therefore need be said by way of preface. My main object has been to afford facilities for the correct understanding of the sacred text - to aid the student of the Bible in ascertaining, with the utmost practicable exactness, the genuine sense of the original. With such an object in view it was perhaps impossible to avoid giving the work an aspect predominantly critical. But an apology on this score can scarcely be requisite at the present day, when the claims of sacred philology are beginning to be so highly appreciated; when at is so generally admitted that the grand aim of the Scriptural expositor should be to fix with the most absolute precision the 'mind of the Spirit' in his own word; and when it is so well understood that this end can be attained only by means of a familiar acquaintance with the original in its verbal and idiomatic peculiarities, its parallel usages, and its archaeological illustrations. Besides, unless I have come wholly short of my aim, there will be found such a union of the practical with the critical, as to adapt the present and the ensuring volumes somewhat happily to popular use. Should this prove not to be case, I shall feel that the failure has been rather in the execution, than in the plan; for I know no reason to suppose the two departments intrinsically incompatible, or that the two-fold function of the exegetical and the ethical expositor may not be united in the same person About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Helps to Bible Study: With Practical Notes on the Books of Scripture When we first commenced the work, of which this book is the result, we had no intention of ever publishing it in book form. Realizing our need of a more intimate acquaintance with the Holy Scriptures, we began making a thorough study of each book of the Bible. We found this study so profitable for both mind and heart, that we could not refrain from making the fruits of it known to others. Some friends strongly importuned us to publish, in some permanent form, the notes we had made. We have yielded to their request, hoping that this book will be the means of stirring up Christians generally to more diligence in searching the blessed Word of God. In addition to original matter, we have added the very best thoughts of the most able writers on helps to the study of the Bible. We have aimed, as far as possible, to make the book useful to all classes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I have endeavoured to make the notes as short as possible, that the comment may not obscure or swallow up the text: and as plain as possible, in pursuance of my main design, to assist the unlearned reader: for this reason I have studiously avoided, not only all curious and critical inquiries, and all use of the learned languages, but all such methods of reasoning and modes of expression as people in common life are unacquainted with for the same reason, as I rather endeavour to obviate than to propose and answer questions, so I purposely decline going deep into many difficulties, lest I should leave the ordinary reader behind me. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes, Critical and Practical, on the Book of Judges: Designed as a General Help to Biblical Reading and Instruction The Chronology of this book is exceedingly embarrassed and diffi cult, and there is little agreement among learned men respecting it. This arises chiefly from the facts related being reckoned from different eras which cannot now be exactly ascertained; and also from judges being thought - by some to be successive, whom others consider to have been contemporary in different parts of Palestine. Without reciting the details of the different hypotheses proposed to solve these difficulties, it may be sufficient to state, that Dr. Hales makes the whole period from the death of Joshua to the death of Samson to be 400 years, while Usher and Lightfoot make it not far from 300. After all it is doubtful whee ther from the nature of the book, it is possible to adjust the narrative into a, regular chronological series. It appears, for the' most part, to have been composed of loose historical memoranda, having little rela tion to each other, and put together by the compiler, like the narratives of the Evangelists in the New Testament, without the least view to a methodical arrangement. Accordingly in our remarks on the book we purposely leave all chronological questions untouched. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes, Critical and Practical on the Book of Leviticus: Designed as a General Help to Biblical Reading and Instruction It is so called from the fact that it treats principally of the rites and ceremonies, the services and sacrifices, of the religion of the Israelites, the charge of which was committed to the Levitical priesthood, that is, to Aaron and his sons, or descendants, who were of the tribe of Levi, and who alone of that tribe exercised the priestly office. It is not, therefore, the ministry of the Levites properly so called, who constituted a distinct order from the priests, and subordinate to them, that forms the subject of this book, for of their services a much fuller account is contained in the book of Numbers than in the present. The 'sons of Aaron, ' or the priests, were merely assisted in the performance of their sacred office by the descendants of the other branch of Levi's family, who obtained the privilege of officiating as a kind of second order of the priesthood, in recompense of the ready zeal which they displayed against idolatry and the worshippers of the golden calf. That Moses was the real author of this book, is proved, not only by the general arguments which demonstrate him to have written the whole Pentateuch, but by particular passages in other portions of the Scriptures where it is expressly cited as his inspired work. Thus, Nehem. 8. 14, 'And they found written in the law which the Lord had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month.' This ordinance is contained Lev. 23. 34, 42. Again it is said of the mother of Jesus, Luke 2. 22, that 'When the days of her purification according to the law of Moses, were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, ' a law which is to be found Lev. 12. 6. Once more, it is said 2 Chron. 30. 16, of the priests and Levites, that 'they stood in their place, after their manner, according to the law of Moses, the man of the Lord; the priests sprinkled of the blood which they received of the hand of the Levites.' This regulation occurs Lev. 1. 5. The true authorship of the book is by these passages put beyond question. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prospectus of a New Translation of the Holy Bible: From Corrected d104s of the Originals, Compared With the Ancient Versions, With Various Readings, Explanatory Notes, and Critical Observations The following Prospectus was fairly written out for the press nearly two years ago. This, it is hoped, will account for some things being added in the notes, which, perhaps, might have been more properly incorporated in the text. In reading over the printed sheets, I have observed some typographical errors, the principal of which are corrected on the reverse of this leaf: but there is a mistake page 100 line 15, that needs to be apologized for. An edition of the New Testament is there said to have been mentioned before, although it is not mentioned till afterwards, in the note, p. 131, which the reader is requested to attend to.
