Book excerpt: The level properties near the stable doubly-magic nuclei formed the experimental grounds for the theoretical description of nuclear structure. However with a departure from the beta-stability line, the classical well-established shell structure might be modified. In particular, it may even vanish for extremely exotic neutron-rich nuclei near the neutron-drip line. Presently, it is impossible to verify such predictions by a direct experimental studies of these exotic objects. However, one may try to observe and understand the evolution of the nuclear structure while departing in the experiment as far as possible from the stable nuclei. An extension of experimental nuclear structure studies towards the nuclei characterized by high neutron excess is crucial for such verifications as well as for the [tau]-process nucleosynthesis scenario. Heavy neutron-rich nuclei, south-east of doubly-magic 2°8Pb, were always very difficult to produce and investigate. The nuclei like 218Po and 214Pb or 21°Tl marked the border line of known nuclei from the beginning of the radioactivity era for over ninety years. To illustrate the difficulties, one can refer to the experiments employing the on-line mass separator technique. A spallation of heavy targets like 232Th and 238U by high-energy protons was proven as a source of heavy neutron-rich nuclei. The isotopes near and beyond doubly-magic 2°8Pb were produced too. However, such studies often suffered from an isobaric contamination of much more strongly produced and efficiently released elements like francium or radon and their decay products. A new experimental technique, based on the pulsed release element selective method recently developed at the PS Booster-ISOLDE at CERN [7,8,9] greatly reduces the contamination of these very short-lived [alpha]-emitters (Z ≥ 84) for the isobaric mass chains A=215 to A=218.

Book excerpt: The present limits of the upper part of the nuclear map are rather close to the beta stability line while the unexplored area of heavy neutron rich nuclides (also those located along the neutron closed shell N = 126 to the right hand side of the stability line) is extremely important for nuclear astrophysics investigations and, in particular, for the understanding of the r-process of astrophysical nucleogenesis. For elements with Z > 100 only neutron deficient isotopes (located to the left of the stability line) have been synthesized so far. The “north-east” area of the nuclear map can be reached neither in fusion-fission reactions nor in fragmentation processes widely used nowadays for the production of new nuclei. Multi-nucleon transfer processes in near barrier collisions of heavy ions seem to be the only reaction mechanism allowing us to produce and explore neutron rich heavy nuclei including those located at the superheavy island of stability. Neutron capture process can be also considered as an alternative method for the production of long-lived neutron rich superheavy nuclei. Strong neutron fluxes might be provided by nuclear reactors and nuclear explosions in laboratory frame and by supernova explosions in nature.

Book excerpt: The study of low-lying levels of nuclei near closed shells not only elucidates the evolution of nuclear shell structure far from stability, but also affects estimates of heavy element nucleosynthesis in supernova explosions. Especially, the properties of the low-lying levels in 81Ge[Germanium 81] are important because the sensitivity study of the r-process pointed out that the properties of the nucleus can affect the final bundance pattern. Also, the spins and parities measurements of the states are essential to understand the shape coexistence in odd-mass N = 49 isotones. This work describes the study of the odd-mass N = 49 nucleus, 81Ge in the region of neutron magic number N = 50 using an inverse kinematics (d,p) transfer reaction. The d(80Ge[Germanium 80],p)81Ge neutron transfer reaction was measured by bombarding a 174 μg[microgram]/cm2[centimetersquared] (CD2)n[deuterated polyethylene] target with a 310 MeV beam of radioactive 80Ge at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The new ORNL DAQ ASICs system was commissioned for a first implementation of the development in the experiment. The excitation energies of low-lying levels were measured. From analysis of the observed angular distributions, the spins and the parities were determined, and spectroscopic factors were extracted for the first time. Neutron capture cross sections on 80Ge have been calculated in a direct-semidirect model using extracted spectroscopic factors. Furthermore, two intruder states were confirmed and their properties were compared with other odd-mass N = 49 isotones.
