Book excerpt: Over the last few years, the use of online social networks has increased exponentially and some of these communities are among the most visited sites on the internet. With this boom in popularity has also come a rise in the need for marketing within these spaces and very little academic literature exists on how to best utilize this new arena in promotion activities. This book explores the use of new media in the promotion of domestic tourism. Despite evidence of slow rates of adoption among domestic tourists and tourist site managers, the future of tourism seems heavily dependent on this innovation. This is because all these players find this innovation to have a Relative Advantage. This exploration is conducted based on Everett Rogers' Diffusion of Innovations theory (1995). New media's high complexity, lack of its control in terms of user generated content, among other reasons, have hampered its adoption. These findings should help shed some light on this new and exciting Public Relations innovation and should be especially useful to professionals in Communication and Marketing fields or anyone considering utilizing online communities for for promotional purposes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kenyan economy performed comparatively well in 2015, even in the face of global economic headwinds. According to the World Bank, GDP growth is expected to reach 5.4% for the year, aided in large part by sustained public sector capital spending. The country has a strong private sector and received encouraging signs of new oil, gas and water reserves, which if harnessed appropriately bode well for future growth. The country’s medium- to long-term economic outlook is robust. With over 40% of the population under the age of 15, Kenya stands to benefit from a significant demographic dividend, provided that sufficient jobs can be found when this population enters the workforce. The country has a reasonably sized industrial base, competitive infrastructure and a large agricultural sector, all of which offer opportunities for capital-intensive investment.

Book excerpt: Focusing on the future of tourism, Sustainable Tourism Dialogues in Africa is inclusive of experienced and emerging researchers, as well as incorporating local stakeholders in the tourism industry: architects, tourism operators, sustainable tourism lobbyists, policy makers, archaeologists, and geographers. The editors are frontline sustainable tourism advocates in Africa, and the book’s thematic content is derived from 30 inter-university seminars on sustainable tourism hosted by Sustainable Travel & Tourism Agenda Kenya from 2017 to November 2019. These seminars involved the participation of 17 universities in Kenya, tourism operators, conservationists, developmentalists, investors, policy makers, and students. Every chapter is a voice projecting aspirations for the responsible management of tourism in Africa and promoting the ideals of sustainable tourism that young people in Africa advocate for the industry’s future. In so doing, the authors pinpoint the necessary actions for bringing about transformations in sustainable development of tourism. The book thus seeks to encourage debate, while facilitating the development of both theoretical and practical foundations for managing tourism sustainably in Africa.

Book excerpt: As the largest economy in the EAC and COMESA in terms of GDP, Kenya has positioned itself as a major economic power in sub-Saharan Africa. Traditionally a largely agrarian economy, Kenya has quickly entrenched its position as a manufacturing, logistics and technology hub in the region, and this diversification forms a solid platform from which the government can generate economic growth over the coming years. The resolution of the electoral process, improving business confidence and strong private consumption are likely to support GDP expansion over 2018 and into 2019. In April 2018 the IMF estimated the economy would expand by 5.5% in 2018 and 6% in 2019, compared to 4.8% in 2017.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With both domestic and external financing expected to dry up in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, this book argues that there is a need for fresh ideas and new strategies for achieving sustainable development in Africa. In addition to triggering the most severe recession in nearly a century, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted global value chains, causing unprecedented damage to healthcare systems, economies, and well-being, hitting the world’s most vulnerable people the hardest. Even before the pandemic, Africa was suffering from the effects of low commodity prices, sluggish GDP growth, high debt levels, low levels of domestic savings, and weak private capital inflows. This book argues that now, as the continent emerges from the current crisis, it will be important to reconfigure current financing sources under a forward-looking framework that incorporates other non-traditional financing tools and mechanisms such as public-private partnerships, sovereign wealth funds, gender lens investing, new growth drivers, and emerging and disruptive technologies. Finally, the book concludes by adopting a sectoral approach and examining the real economy impacts of new growth drivers such as agriculture value chains, industrialization, tourism, and the blue economy. Drawing on a range of original research as well as insights from practice, this book will be a useful guide for Global Development and African Studies researchers, as well as for policy makers, investors, finance specialists, and global business practitioners and entrepreneurs.
