Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the people from the New Hebrides (Vanuatu) and the Solomon Islands who left their homes to work in the French colony of New Caledonia has long remained a missing piece of Pacific Islands history. Now Dorothy Shineberg has brought these laboreres to life by painstakingly assembling fragments from a wide variety of scattered records and documents. She tells the story of their recruitment, then sketches the workers’ lives in New Caledonia, describing the contractual arrangements, the kinds of work they did, their living conditions, how they spent their free time, the large numbers who sickened and died, and the choice at the end of the contract to remain in the colony as free workers or to return home. Throughout the book she throws light on the controversy about the recruiting of the Islanders: were they kidnapped? Or did they choose to leave home? If so, what motivated them? Evidently the Islanders’ cheap labor contributed to the development of the French colony, but how did the episode affect them and their homeland? The People Trade offers readers a revealing new picture of a long neglected side of the Pacific Islands labor trade.

Book excerpt: Keith Woodward has produced an inside account of the intricacies of official politics in the latter stages of the history of the Anglo-French Condominium of the New Hebrides, which will be essential reading for anyone interested in the colonial period of Vanuatu. Woodward spent 25 years in the New Hebrides (1953 to 1978) based in the British Residency and it is his long service which makes his memoir so informative and important. Following a fascinating and insightful description of Port Vila and the New Hebrides when he arrived in the 1950s, Woodward focuses the rest of his memoir on issues relating to the difficulties the British faced in convincing the French that the two powers should come to an agreement on decolonisation of the New Hebrides—that is, to establish a process of constitutional advancement leading ultimately to independence. — Howard Van Trease, Honorary Research Fellow, Emalus Campus, University of the South Pacific, Port Vila This is a highly original, evocative and engaging memoir which offers an insightful firsthand account of colonial administration, bilateral French and British relations, political change and decolonisation in Vanuatu. It addresses some lacunae in the historiography of Vanuatu and dispels a number of assumptions about French intentions there. It will be of great benefit to people interested in Vanuatu, and more broadly in political change in the Pacific, constitutional arrangements, decolonisation, French-British relations, and particularly the divergent colonial policies of France and the United Kingdom. — Gregory Rawlings, Anthropology, University of Otago

Pacific: Arguments for Sole Control to Pass to British Empire One of the main Objects that France had in taking possession of New Caledonia was that the Island might be utilised as a Convict Settlement. The Census of 1901 in New Caledonia is significant. There were then Officials, soldiers and colonists; natives; and convicts. Though the introduction of convicts ceased in 1898, the fact that there were over of these criminals there in 1901 speaks for itself. Australia has undoubtedly suffered from the presence near her shores of thousands of the lowest criminals of France. Dislike of isolation is characteristic of the French, and naturally therefore French convicts escaping from New Caledonia found their way to Australia. Not only so but such Frenchmen are prone to dislike hard and continuous manual labour, especially so when aboriginals can be secured, by cajolery or bribes, or even by force, to undertake tropical labour. The original natives of New Caledonia having largely died out (reduced from in 1850 to in 1901) the French were early in the field in the effort to secure, often, alas, by violent means - which ultimately outraged the feelings of mankind - natives from the New Hebrides to replenish the supply of labourers in New Caledonia men for work, and women for worse purposes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Year in the New Hebrides, Loyalty Islands, and New Caledonia It is a hundred years since Cook visited and described the New Hebrides; and his account of them has not been entirely superseded, even to this day. Captains of the Navy and Christian Missionaries have given us Sketches of the People, and of their Ways, and of their Island Homes. But their narratives have been fragmentary in their intelligence, and many of them fugitive in their form. The present volume cannot claim to be much more than its predecessors. It is a contribution merely to the physical, social, and religious history of this interesting and important group. Book excerpt: For some, Tahiti, New Caledonia and Wallis and Futuna are idyllic tropical islands with a French flavour, while for others they represent continuing French colonialism, thwarted independence movements and nuclear testing. This book looks at the realities of the French territories in Oceania, and the former Franco-British condominium of the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu), as well as changing French policy in the region. This study is based on published sources as well as archival material and interviews, and is a sequel to the highly praised The French Presence in the South Pacific, 1842-1940.
