Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New multicomponent Zr free fluoride glasses are investigated for I.R. optical fiber preparation. A rotational casting technique associated with the fabrication of a new dry glove box have been developed in order to prepare tube and then core-clad preform. The glass BIZYT based ion indium and barium essentially can be shaped as a tube without crystallization. Attempts for core-clad preform design indicate a tendency of crystallites formation at the core-clad interface. Contamination of the glass by transition metals and viscosity measurements are in a early stage of investigation. Keywords: Fluoride glasses; Optical fiber; Preform preparation; Rotational casting; Transition metal impurities; Viscosity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes efforts carried out under a Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Phase II contract, whose purpose was to assess the feasibility of producing large bulk articles of heavy metal fluoride glass (HMFG). The HMFG are a family of non-oxide vitreous materials with broad range of transparency (ultraviolet to mid-infrared), and are potentially useful as multispectral optical components and optical fibers. The present report supplements and expands on the results obtained under an SBIR Phase I contract (F30602-83-C-0189) described in an earlier RADC Final Technical Report (RADC-TR-84-279). In the course of this effort, a variety of facilities, apparatus and techniques were established to upscale and improve HMFG fabrication technology. Glass compositions, laboratory-scale melting methods, and characterization techniques developed in the course of RADC in-house basic research programs were transferred to the contractor for evaluation in an industrial setting. Keywords: Fluoride glasses; Optical fibers; Infrared materials, Nonoxide glasses, Infrared fibers, Electromagnetic windows.

Book excerpt: In the past 10 years, there have been many developments in the field of infrared transmitting fiber optics. This is highlighted by the many different fiber compositions that have been studied around the world for numerous practical applications. This book reviews different fiber systems, describing material properties, techniques used to prepare the fibers and fiber properties with particular emphasis on optical properties. These fibers possess unique optical, mechanical, and physical properties, enabling many technologies. Examples of applications are described within given chapters, allowing an engineer or scientist to choose the most appropriate fiber for a desired application. The introduction gives the reader an overview of transmission theory so that the basic concepts are clearly understood by someone new to the field. The next several chapters describe the different types of infrared transmitting fibers, including glass fibers such as those based on silica, fluoride, and chalcogenide glasses; the crystalline fibers based on single or polycrystalline materials; and hollow waveguides. The commercial chemical sensing applications of some of these new fibers are described. The final chapter summarizes the properties of the fibers and highlights future prospects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluoride Glass Fiber Optics reviews the fundamental aspects of fluoride glasses. This book is divided into nine chapters. Chapter 1 discusses the wide range of fluoride glasses with an emphasis on fluorozirconate-based compositions. The structure of simple fluoride systems, such as BaF2 binary glass is elaborated in Chapter 2. The third chapter covers the intrinsic transparency of fluoride glasses from the UV to the IR, with particular emphasis on the multiphonon edge and electronic edge. The next three chapters are devoted to ultra-low loss optical fibers, reviewing methods for purifying and analyzing the fluoride glass raw materials. The sources of loss are considered in Chapter 6, while the work performed on the durability of fluoride glasses is analyzed in Chapter 7. Chapter 8 focuses on the effects of radiation on fluoride glasses. The last chapter deliberates the area of active phenomena such as doping of fluoride glasses with rare-earth elements for fluorescence and lasing, as well as frequency doubling. This publication is a good reference for students and researchers conducting work on fluoride glasses.

Book excerpt: Advancements have been concerned with the preparation of fluoride glasses for ultra low loss fibers. Composition for cone and cladding glasses have been further enhanced to provide increased resistance to devitrification in synthesis and subsequent processing. Reproducible procedures for the preparation of pure fluoride of girconium, barium, lithium, aluminum, lanthanum, and lead were obtained. An optical fiber drawing laboratory for the silica based glass has been set up. Included is the design and fabrication of a draw tower. A laboratory has been established dedicated to the measurement and characterization of the optical properties of bulk and fiber samples of glass, especially the new infrared transmitting glass being developed at NRL.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of heavy metal halide glasses (namely fluorides) is only ten years old now, but it has developed rapidly since the discovery of fluorozirconate glasses by the group at the University of Rennes (France). The main reason for this was the early demonstration of the enormous potential of such glasses for use as long-haul ultra-low loss middle infrared waveguide materials, aided in part by the scientific interest held by their unusual short range structures. As a result, significant research efforts were initiated in the academic, government and industrial sectors in Europe, the United States and Japan. However, the search for a finished product has per haps led to a partial overlooking of some of the more funda mental aspects by the scientific community. After the initial excitement, the workers in this field are perhaps at a crossroads where attenuations lower than 1 dB/Km need to be obtained for long lengths of fiber of good chemical and thermal stability, in order to guarantee continual R&D sUE ports. Therefore, there is a strong need for a critical asses sment of the potential of halide glasses for infrared fiber optics and the formulation of recommendations for future re search in this area and other related fields.

Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive contributed volume that aims to describe and explain the design, fabrication, operating characteristics, and specific applications of the most popular and useful types of specialty optical fibers. These “specialty fibers include any kind of optical fiber that has been architecturally manipulated to diverge from a conventional structure. For instance, metal-coated fibers can be utilized for bandwidth improvement, and hollow core fibers offer more controllable dispersion for sensitive medical procedures. Applications for these specialty fibers abound in the biomedical, sensors, and industrial fields, as well as in more traditional communications capacities. This book will act as a specialty fiber “guided tour, hosted by the top names in the discipline. The globally renowned editors, Drs. Mendez and Morse, have extensive experience in research, academia, and industry. *Completely covers biomedical and industrial sensor technology with emphasis on real world applications *Comparative studies of pros and cons of all fiber types with relation to test and measurement, mechanical properties and strength, and reliability *Easy to access essential facts and details at the begining of each chapter
