When a revision of this was first undertaken, the purpose was to adapt it to a wider range of use by the insertion of a greater variety of exercises and the addition of vocabularies. So many incidental alterations and additions have attended the work that an entirely new book has resulted. However, the logical arrangement of topics, and the clearness and simplicity of statement that characterized the earlier volume, are every where retained. At the present time the ideas of American teachers are begin ning to be fairly in accord touching the content of the elementary course in French. To meet the demands of this course is the aim of this book, as its title indicates, and it seeks to accomplish little more. It does endeavor, nevertheless, by the character and quantity of material presented, to secure sufficient flexibility to meet, as fully as may be, the diverse conditions that the American educational system presents. Such variations appear in the time allowed by the curriculum, the maturity of the class, the imme diate aim of the work, and the method of the teacher. The exer cises will readily lend themselves to the molding hand of. The instructor who strives to impart a practical command of the living language. The book is equally well adapted to serve in a second ary school and to constitute the nucleus of the first year's work in a college course that does not demand French for entrance. It was received with favor, and since that date numerous reimpressions have been made to meet the demands of the public. The present revision has been undertaken for the purpose of introducing such changes as time and experience have suggested as likely to be useful, without however disturbing the original character of the book, or changing the paragraph numbers. The use of the phonetio symbols adopted by the Association Phonétique Internationale has been retained throughout the book, wherever needed to aid in the teaching of pronunciation. The pronunciation of all French words in the French-English portion of the Vocabulary is given by phonetic transcription based upon the Dictionnaire Phonétique of Michaelis and Paasy. The most considerable changes have been made in the Exercises I-XXXIX of Part I, which have been rewritten by Professor A. Coleman of the Romance Department of the University of Chicago, who, with great unselfishness and in a spirit of admiration for the Grammar, has cooperated with the authors and publishers in their effort to make the book more useful to teachers and students. The grammatical part of each lesson remains substantially as it was in the original edition. In the Exercises an attempt has been made, in accordance with advanced methods of teaching, to provide an abundant and varied apparatus for oral practice and for training in accuracy of pronunciation, in writing from dictation, and in composition; also a section of useful Classroom Expressions has been introduced for the convenience of both teachers and students. In fact, it is everywhere emphasised throughout the book that learning to speak the language is of prime importance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A French Grammar for Schools and Colleges Having regard to the importance of securing accurate pronunciation from the very outset, care has been taken to facilitate the work of the teacher in this respect by giving a phonetic transcription of all vocabularies and paradigms, under the conviction that in no other way can distinctions in sounds be intelligibly explained. In order, however, not to confuse the beginner with too minute distinctions, half long vowels have not been indicated, and the same rule has been observed, for the most part, with regard to such stressed vowels as are optionally long or short. The elementary exercises are based almost exclusively upon connected pieces of French, dealing with a variety of topics relating to every-day life, and make provision for both oral and written practice. They have been provided in abundance so as to admit of selection and variety, and to afford ample material for review. In both the elemen tary and advanced exercises, regard has been had to the requirements of such teachers as feel the necessity for a large amount of work of this kind in order to ensure ade quate and practical knowledge on the part of the pupil. Part I. Consists of a series of lessons on the elements of grammar as an essential preparation for easy reading, while Part II. Furnishes a systematic grammar of modern French for later study and general reference. To this part a se ries of exercises has been added dealing with the various topics treated in the text. It was thought best to group these exercises together at the end, in order not to impair the usefulness of the Grammar as a book of reference by inserting the exercises immediately after the paragraphs to which they refer. Each exercise, however, is furnished with section references which will enable the pupil to turn readily to the theory upon which the exercises are based.
