Book excerpt: The origins of this book go back 30 years to the stimulation and interest generated by the political geography seminars led by John House at the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. I was very fortunate to graduate among its extremely capable, sporty and enthusiastic "class of '68" from where several academic geographers emerged. Equally fortunately, some of them and their predecessors had already blazed a trail to undertake graduate studies in Canada. At the University of British Columbia I was supervised at different times by Julian Minghi and Victor Prescott, both of whom are not only extremely capable academics but are also very fine people. lowe an enormous debt to John, Julian and Victor and to the British and Canadian taxpayers who provided financial support for my University studies. In 1974, I began an academic career at the University of Western Australia where I have been ever since, save for a two-year period from 1991-3 as Professor of Australian Studies in the Department of International Relations at the University of Tokyo. Viewing Australia and the Asia-Pacific region from this different perspective within an extremely supportive Japanese environment had a profound impact. I am especially grateful for the support provided by so many Japanese academic colleagues and friends beginning as early as 1976. Three individuals deserve special mention for their help, guidance and enduring friendship - George Ohshima, Hiroshi Tanabe and Akihiro Kinda.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many policy analysts believe China-Japan-U.S. relations to be the key triangle in world politics of the 21st century. The ten essays in this book probe the interrelations of the three major powers of the Asia Pacific region. Experts from China, Japan, and the United States examine the evolving nature of trilateral relations by analyzing the impact on their interactions of such international events as the Asian financial crisis, the situation on the Korean peninsula, and the new nuclear arms race in South Asia occasioned by India's and Pakistan's nuclear tests. Recognizing that the continuing prosperity and security of Asia Pacific is largely contingent upon enhanced cooperation between China, Japan, and the United States, the authors examine the ways in which the three countries can collaborate to resolve specific troublesome regional issues and ways in which bilateral relations among the three can be improved. The Asian financial crisis, the South Asian nuclear tests, and the exchange of visits between President Bill Clinton and President Jiang Zemin appear to have drastically changed the context for discussion of trilateral relations. The warming of Sino-U.S. relations in particular has caused some analysts to question whether in the next century the United States might make a strategic choice to downplay its close security and economic relations with Japan in favor of a broadened and deepened relationship with China. China's rise, particularly if it is perceived as having come about at Japan's expense, will call into question the objective of trilateral dialogue: Is it to develop equidistant relations, or to reinforce current bilateral relationships while maintaining the status quo? These new dimensions of the China-Japan-U.S. relationship point to the importance of developing a sustained trilateral dialogue to manage the psychology of trilateral relations, for the benefit of the three countries and the region, as well.

Book excerpt: "Japan has loomed large in post-war Australian foreign and economic policies. At the regional level, the relationship with Japan has become since the 1960s Australia[MARC]80][MARC]99]as longest, arguably most important and trouble-free bilateral relationship. The rapid improvement in bilateral relations by 1965, especially given the level of general hostility and suspicion towards Japan in Australia that had existed immediately after the Pacific War, represented a remarkable shift in policy thinking in Canberra. Yet surprisingly little has been written about the political dimension of the relationship and in particular, the level of dialogue between Australia and Japan from 1952 to 1965 on regional matters. This book examines the relationship between Australia, Japan and Southeast Asia in relation to early post-war initiatives in regional diplomacy."--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia's economy has long been typified by neo-liberal governance, foreign investment dependence, exports dominated by grains, resources and energy, and an industrial structure in which foreign multinational enterprises play the leading role. These factors have not always contributed to stable growth and a strong manufacturing sector. Further, they have not always led to the best outcomes for Australia in its integration into the regional and global patterns. These themes form the focus of this book, which presents an analysis of Australia's economic orthodoxy and its effects. (Series: Global Cultural and Economic Research - Vol. 10)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India's foreign policy has witnessed a dramatic transformation since the end of the Cold War. Though academic study of Indian foreign policy has also shown a degree of maturity, theoretical developments have been underwhelming. Scholars have introduced new concepts and examined Indian foreign policy through new prisms, but a cohesive research agenda has not yet been charted. This volume intends to fill that void. It brings together new cutting-edge research in the field of Indian foreign policy - both at the theoretical and empirical level - so as to shape the discourse on foreign policy of one of the most important players in global politics. This volume explores key concepts like 'constructivism' and 'territoriality' and analyses their contribution to the academic discourse on Indian foreign policy. Issues such as the 'Indo-Pacific' and the 'responsibility to protect' have also been examined to address the expanding horizons of Indian foreign policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most significant factors for contemporary international relations is the growth of China’s economic, military, and political power. Indeed, few analysts would dispute the observation that China’s power has strongly influenced the structure of the international system, major-power strategic relations, international security, the patterns of trans-border economic activities, and most importantly, the political and security dynamics in Asia in the twenty-first century. This book maps the growth of China’s political, economic, and military capabilities and its impact on the security order in Asia over the coming decades. While updating the emerging power dimensions and prevailing discourse, it provides a nuanced analysis of whether the growth of Chinese power is resulting in Beijing becoming more assertive, or even aggressive, in its behavior and pursuit of national interests. It also examines how the key Asian countries perceive and react to the growth of China’s power and how US rebalancing would play out in the context of Beijing’s political, economic, and military power. China’s Power and Asian Security will be of huge interest to student and scholars of Asian politics, Chinese politics, security studies and international security and international relations more generally.
