By endowing drugs with new and innovative therapeutic benefits, drug delivery systems extend products’ profitable lifecycle, giving pharmaceutical companies competitive and financial advantages, and providing patients with improved medications. Formulation development is now being used to create new dosage forms for existing products, which not only reduces the time and expense involved in new drug development, but also helps with regard to patent protection and bypassing existing patents. Today’s culture demands convenience, a major factor determining adherence to drug therapy. Over the past few years, patient convenience-oriented research in the field of drug delivery has yielded a range of innovative drug-delivery options. As a result, various drug-delivery systems, including medicated chewing gums, oral dispersible tablets, medicated lozenges and lollipops, have now hit the market and are very popular. These dosage forms offer a highly convenient way to dose medications, not only for special population groups with swallowing difficulties, such as children and the elderly, but for the general populace as well. This book provides valuable insights into a number of formulation design approaches that are currently being used, or could be used, to provide new benefits from existing drug molecules.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eye is the most easily accessible site for topical administration of a medication. Drugs are commonly applied to the eye for localised action on the surface or in the interior of the eye. A major problem in ocular therapeutics is the attainment of an optimal drug concentration at the site of action. Poor bioavailability of drugs from ocular dosage forms is mainly due to the precorneal loss factors which include tear dynamics, non-productive absorption, transient residence time in the cul-de-sac, and the relative impermeability of the corneal epithelial membrane. Due to these physiological and anatomical constraints only a small fraction of the drug, effectively 1% or even less of the instilled dose is ocularly absorbed. The effective dose of medication administered ophthalmically may be altered by increasing the retention time of medication in contact with the surface of the eye. To date, Pharmaceutical Technologists have tried to develop different novel formulations like gel, ocular inserts, collagen shields, implants, liposomes, nanoparticles, penetration enhancers and in-situ gelling systems, in order to increase the bioavailability and duration of the therapeutic action of ocular drugs and polymers plays an important role in all these approaches. This book provides detailed information regarding all such polymers which have been used and shown to be excellent in improving the bioavailability of ocular drugs.

Book excerpt: This book reviews the rapidly emerging field of switchable interfaces and its implications for bioelectronics. The authors piece together early breakthroughs and key developments and highlight the future of switchable bioelectronics by focusing on bioelectrochemical processes based on mimicking and controlling biological environments with external stimuli as well as responsive systems for drug delivery. All chapters in the book strive to answer the fundamental question: How do living systems probe and respond to their surroundings? Following on from that, how can one transform these concepts to serve the practical world of bioelectronics? The central obstacle to this vision is the absence of versatile interfaces that are able to control and regulate the means of communication between biological and electronic systems. This book summarizes the overall progress made to date in building such interfaces at the level of individual biomolecules and focuses on the latest efforts to generate device platforms that integrate biointerfaces with electronics. Chapter 1 introduces the general concept of dynamic interfaces for bioelectronics and gives an overview of the importance of materials and systems for switchable bioelectronics, introducing the reader to different biointerfaces. Chapter 2 pieces together different types of stimuli-responsive polymers and applications. Chapter 3 lays special emphasis on stimuli-responsive polymers with tunable release kinetics and describes the importance of polymer design for delivery applications. Chapter 4 reviews the field of conformational switching in nanofibers for gas-sensing applications. Finally, Chapter 5 focuses on molecular imprinting polymers as recognition elements for sensing applications. As informative as it is lucid, this handbook makes an essential resource for advanced undergraduate- and graduate-level students in chemistry, as well as researchers in polymer science and electrochemistry, especially those with an interest in responsive polymers and biosensors.
