Download or read book Controversy written by William Manchester and published by Rosetta Books. This book was released on 2013-10-25 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth journey through America and the world in the postwar years, from a New York Times–bestselling historian and biographer. Among his many accomplishments, William Manchester was especially known for his book The Death of a President, the award-winning account of the assassination of John F. Kennedy that embroiled him in a lawsuit filed by Jackie Kennedy. The title essay in this collection recounts the experience of publishing that book, and of his battle with JFK’s widow. In addition, Controversy includes a wide range of journalistic pieces published in the period between World War II and Vietnam, covering McCarthyism to Watergate and highlighting the insights and observations of a distinguished career that earned the author the National Humanities Medal and the Abraham Lincoln Literary Award, among other honors. “A work of love, even passion. . . . Mr. Manchester’s final telling of the death of Kennedy is most moving.” —Gore Vidal

Book Synopsis Demystifying China's Innovation Machine by : Marina Zhang
Download or read book Demystifying China's Innovation Machine written by Marina Zhang and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-07 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's extraordinary economic development is explained in large part by the way it innovates. Contrary to widely held views, China's innovation machine is not created and controlled by an all-powerful government. Instead, it is a complex, interdependent system composed of various elements, involving bottom-up innovation driven by innovators and entrepreneurs and highly pragmatic and adaptive top-down policy. Using case studies of leading firms and industries, along with statistics and policy analysis, this book argues that China's innovation machine is similar to a natural ecosystem. Innovations in technology, organization, and business models resemble genetic mutations which are initially random, self-serving, and isolated, but the best fitting are selected by the market and their impacts are amplified by the innovation machine. This machine draws on China's multitude manufacturers, supply chains, innovation clusters, and digitally literate population, connected through super-sized digital platforms. China's innovation suffers from a lack of basic research and reliance upon certain critical technologies from overseas, yet its scale (size) and scope (diversity) possess attributes that make it self-correcting and stronger in the face of challenges. China's innovation machine is most effective in a policy environment where the market prevails; policy intervention plays a significant role when market mechanisms are premature or fail. The future success of China's innovation will depend on continuing policy pragmatism, mass innovation, and entrepreneurship, and the development of the 'new infrastructures'.
Book Synopsis Modern China and the West by : Hsiao-yen PENG
Download or read book Modern China and the West written by Hsiao-yen PENG and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-04-30 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Modern China and the West: Translation and Cultural Mediation, the authors investigate the significant role translation plays in the act of cultural mediation. They pay attention to transnational organizations that bring about cross-cultural interactions as well as regulating authorities, in the form of both nation-states and ideologies, which dictate what, and even how, to translate. Under such circumstances, is there room for individual translators or mediators to exercise their free will? To what extent are they allowed to do so? The authors see translation as a "shaping force." While intending to shape, or reshape, certain concepts through the translating act, translators and cultural actors need to negotiate among multifarious institutional powers that coexist, including traditional and foreign. Contributors include: Françoise Kreissler, Angel Pino, Shan Te-hsing, Nicolai Volland, Joyce C. H. Liu, Huang Ko-wu, Isabelle Rabut, Xiaomei Chen, Zhang Yinde, Peng Hsiao-yen, Sebastian Hsien-hao Liao, and Pin-chia Feng.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book captures and elaborates on the skill of storytelling as one of the distinct leadership features of Xi Jinping, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China and the President of the People’s Republic of China. It gathers the stories included in Xi’s speeches on various occasions, where they conveyed the essence of China’s history and culture, its reform and development, and the principles of China’s participating in global governance and cooperating with other countries to build a community of common destiny. The respective stories not only convey abstract and profound concepts of governance in comparatively straightforward language, but also create an immediate emotional connection between the narrator and the listener. In addition to the original stories, extensive additional materials are provided to convey the original context in which each was told, including when and to whom Xi told it, helping readers attain a deeper, intuitive understanding of their relevance.
