The objective of this effort is to define and evaluate new approaches to two-dimensional arrays of reconfigurable optical interconnections for optical computing. The emphasis is on optically controlled optical beam directors or switches which can be fabricated into high density 2-D arrays. The proposed applications in optical neural computers and other types of optical computers require reconfiguration speeds on the order of microseconds. The emphasis is therefore on devices and nonlinear optical materials with response times of microseconds but with the potential for high packing density. The approach to this research has two components: i. nonlinear optical materials; and ii. optically controlled optical switching devices which can be integrated into 2-D arrays. The materials work stresses the transport assisted optical nonlinear materials since this is the only class of materials which exhibit a sufficiently large nonlinearity, in the response time required, and with a relatively low optical energy required. In these materials, optically excited electric charge is separated by an electric field to create a space charge field which reduces the total electric field. (RH).

Major findings include: (1) Reconfigurable interconnects can reconfigure slower than the bit rate and still improve performance as long as throughput is maintained after reconfiguration; (2) A fixed control sequence does not preclude the use of runtime conditionals, so that the performance of traditional general purpose computing can be improved; (3) A system that uses reconfigurable interconnects is likely to be larger than a functionally equivalent system that does not use reconfigurable interconnects; (4) A reconfigurable approach is most effective for a small active portion of a computer, and is not needed for an entire computer in order to appreciate a performance gain; (5) A reconfigurable interconnect technology can have a significant impact on interconnection networks used in parallel processors; (6) A fixed control sequence must have some level of repetition in order to be practical; and (7) The dataflow model of computing, which theoretically supports maximum parallelism but suffers performance sacrifices in electronic implementations, may be significantly improved since the architecture can be modified to suit the dataflow graph.

The interconnection can be implemented using optical matrix-vector multiplication. The reconfigurability is achieved by changing the interconnection matrix written on a spatial light modulator (SLM). For a one-to-one permutation link of an array of N detectors, such an approach suffers a 1/N intrinsic fanout loss. In this paper, we report the demonstration and characterization of a 4x4 reconfigurable interconnection using two laser diodes (780nm) and a ferroelectric liquid crystal spatial light modulator (FLCSLM) in conjunction with a photorefractive barium titanate crystal. Specifically, we compare the energy efficiency and crosstalk of this new approach with those of the conventional approach.

The fundamental limitations of information processing today derive from the performance and cost of three technical factors: speed, density, and software. Optical computation offers the potential for improvements in all three of these critical areas: Speed is provided by the transmission of impulses at optical veloc ities, without the delays caused by parasitic capacitance in the case of conventional electrical interconnects. Speed can also be achieved through the massive parallelism characteristic of many optical computing architec tures; Density can be provided in optical computers in two ways: by high spatial resolution, on the order of wavelengths of light, and by computa tion or interconnection in three dimensions.

Book excerpt: The relentless quest for processing speeds in the range of Teraflops and beyond has accelerated the need for scalable, parallel, High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems. For these systems to be scalable and attain the desirable performance, the interconnection network connecting the processors, must itself be scalable in both size and bandwidth. However, at higher bit rates and longer communication distances, fundamental electrical signaling limitations reduce the inter-processor communication bandwidth while increasing the power dissipation, thereby affecting not only the performance of HPC systems, but also their scalability. In this dissertation, we propose an optical interconnect based architecture for HPC systems called RAPID (Reconfigurable All Photonic Interconnect for Distributed and parallel systems) that maximizes the bandwidth density, optimizes power consumption and enhances scalability using static wavelength allocation. We also present two cost-effective design alternatives of the architecture, a modified version called M-RAPID and an extended version called E-RAPID that minimizes the cost of the interconnect based on the number of transmitters required. In addition, we propose a detailed implementation and integration methodology of RAPID using current complimentary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology. In order to develop a flexible interconnection architecture, we provide dynamic system reconfiguration that further reduces the communication bottlenecks and achieves better resource utilization. Reconfigurability is realized by monitoring traffic intensities, and implementing dynamic bandwidth re-allocation (DBR) techniques that adapt to changes in communication patterns. A DBR technique - Lock-Step (LS) that balances the load on each communication channel based on past utilization is also presented. While computer-aided design (CAD) toolshave significantly assisted electronic system simulation, the field of system level opto-electronics modeling has lagged behind due to lack of simulation methodologies and tools. We present the design space of developing OPTISIM, a system level modeling and simulation methodology of optical interconnects for HPC systems. Using OPTISIM, we performed detailed simulation of RAPID architectures and compared it to several electrical HPC interconnects using synthetic traffic patterns. Simulation results indicate that the reconfigured architecture shows 35% increased throughput and 20% reduced network latency as compared to HPC electrical networks.
