Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being a Playboy bunny is every girls dream. Betty (Dyer) Miller found the world of Playboy to be a world full of glamour, glitz and excitement when she was chosen to be one of the very first Playboy bunnies when the Playboy Club opened in Cincinnati in 1964. Leaving the Playboy Club, she made many attempts at becoming a star. The story follows Betty as she invents many strange and unusual acts to achieve stardom. One act she attempted was being a snake dancer with her supposed boa constrictor, Sheila, which turned out to be a dangerous snake called an anaconda. We all know how fierce an anaconda can be. Another act found Betty being the Dancing Corpse, actually coming out of a casket and scaring a troop of African American cub scouts when she was doing publicity shots in a public park. This chapter is entitled Feets, Do Your Duty. Among her five husbands was celebrity Kenny Jones, who was a guitar player on the Midwestern Hayride - a popular television show that was telecast nationally. She had watched Kenny on the show for years, never dreaming that one day she would meet him and even marry him. What a thrill that had to have been. Being married to Kenny threw her into the world of top name performers like Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Paycheck who would jam with Kenny at a club called Whiteys in Cincinnati. Betty also narrowly escaped being one of the Cincinnatis Stranglers victims as she encountered him one night after leaving the Playboy Club. Her encounter with him is chilling and will have readers on the edge of their seats. Readers will be memorized by her story. Should Hollywood ever get hold of it, the life and times of Betty Miller would make and excellent and very entertaining movie.

Book Synopsis Victories Never Last by : Robert Zaretsky
Download or read book Victories Never Last written by Robert Zaretsky and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely and nuanced book that sets the author’s experience as a nursing home volunteer during the pandemic alongside the wisdom of great thinkers who confronted their own plagues. In any time of disruption or grief, many of us seek guidance in the work of great writers who endured similar circumstances. During the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, historian and biographer Robert Zaretsky did the same while also working as a volunteer in a nursing home in south Texas. In Victories Never Last Zaretsky weaves his reflections on the pandemic siege of his nursing home with the testimony of six writers on their own times of plague: Thucydides, Marcus Aurelius, Michel de Montaigne, Daniel Defoe, Mary Shelley, and Albert Camus, whose novel The Plague provides the title of this book. Zaretsky delves into these writers to uncover lessons that can provide deeper insight into our pandemic era. At the same time, he goes beyond the literature to invoke his own experience of the tragedy that enveloped his Texas nursing home, one which first took the form of chronic loneliness and then, inevitably, the deaths of many residents whom we come to know through Zaretsky’s stories. In doing so, Zaretsky shows the power of great literature to connect directly to one’s own life in a different moment and time. For all of us still struggling to comprehend this pandemic and its toll, Zaretsky serves as a thoughtful and down-to-earth guide to the many ways we can come to know and make peace with human suffering.

Book Synopsis School Leadership in India by : N. Mythili
Download or read book School Leadership in India written by N. Mythili and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-28 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how school leadership plays a significant role in addressing the issues of poor learning among students in India. It presents in-depth discussions on critical leadership practices that are influenced by the interaction between leadership styles, functions, behaviours and practices of school leaders using theoretical discourse. Besides, a conceptual framework is developed to understand the leadership phenomenon in the Indian context for the overall improvement of schools, student learning and self-development of leaders. While highlighting the issues and challenges faced by schools and school leaders, the book presents a number of vignettes created from the data on various aspects of school leadership practices indicating the styles, behaviours and functions in every chapter. The nature of the analysis is also unique to the discourse on educational leadership as it culminates in tracing the path traversed by the school leaders. The analysis is thematically organised into purpose-process-outcome that spreads across seven chapters. Besides the rigour of vast data that substantiates the arguments using mixed methods, it also vividly discusses the national initiatives undertaken in India to transform instructional and pedagogical leadership of principals and improve students learning in the past one decade or so. The book will be of interest to researchers of education, leadership education and development and school education in university departments of education, management, public administration, development studies and sociology that use interdisciplinary approaches. It will also be useful for school educators, academicians, school leaders, policymakers and teacher educators not only for teaching and research but also for school leadership development for practitioners.

Book Synopsis The Subversive Simone Weil by : Robert Zaretsky
Download or read book The Subversive Simone Weil written by Robert Zaretsky and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known as the “patron saint of all outsiders,” Simone Weil (1909–43) was one of the twentieth century’s most remarkable thinkers, a philosopher who truly lived by her political and ethical ideals. In a short life framed by the two world wars, Weil taught philosophy to lycée students and organized union workers, fought alongside anarchists during the Spanish Civil War and labored alongside workers on assembly lines, joined the Free French movement in London and died in despair because she was not sent to France to help the Resistance. Though Weil published little during her life, after her death, thanks largely to the efforts of Albert Camus, hundreds of pages of her manuscripts were published to critical and popular acclaim. While many seekers have been attracted to Weil’s religious thought, Robert Zaretsky gives us a different Weil, exploring her insights into politics and ethics, and showing us a new side of Weil that balances her contradictions—the rigorous rationalist who also had her own brand of Catholic mysticism; the revolutionary with a soft spot for anarchism yet who believed in the hierarchy of labor; and the humanitarian who emphasized human needs and obligations over human rights. Reflecting on the relationship between thought and action in Weil’s life, The Subversive Simone Weil honors the complexity of Weil’s thought and speaks to why it matters and continues to fascinate readers today.
