Book excerpt: Amoral, cunning, ruthless, and instructive, this multi-million-copy New York Times bestseller is the definitive manual for anyone interested in gaining, observing, or defending against ultimate control – from the author of The Laws of Human Nature. In the book that People magazine proclaimed “beguiling” and “fascinating,” Robert Greene and Joost Elffers have distilled three thousand years of the history of power into 48 essential laws by drawing from the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, and Carl Von Clausewitz and also from the lives of figures ranging from Henry Kissinger to P.T. Barnum. Some laws teach the need for prudence (“Law 1: Never Outshine the Master”), others teach the value of confidence (“Law 28: Enter Action with Boldness”), and many recommend absolute self-preservation (“Law 15: Crush Your Enemy Totally”). Every law, though, has one thing in common: an interest in total domination. In a bold and arresting two-color package, The 48 Laws of Power is ideal whether your aim is conquest, self-defense, or simply to understand the rules of the game.

Mastering a small number of mental models enables you to rapidly grasp new information, identify patterns others miss, and avoid the common mistakes that hold people back. The Great Mental Models: Volume 1, General Thinking Concepts shows you how making a few tiny changes in the way you think can deliver big results. Drawing on examples from history, business, art, and science, this book details nine of the most versatile, all-purpose mental models you can use right away to improve your decision making and productivity. This book will teach you how to: Avoid blind spots when looking at problems. Find non-obvious solutions. Anticipate and achieve desired outcomes. Play to your strengths, avoid your weaknesses, … and more. The Great Mental Models series demystifies once elusive concepts and illuminates rich knowledge that traditional education overlooks. This series is the most comprehensive and accessible guide on using mental models to better understand our world, solve problems, and gain an advantage.

Book excerpt: The practice of law can be a gut-wrenching, high speed rollercoaster ride. A ride departing on the hour, every hour, day in and day out. Where its participants lock themselves in and brace for take-off. It can also be a slow float down a lazy river, traveling no faster than the current. Lawyers spend their lives taking these journeys, but they do not take them alone. The sole purpose of each is to help a client get from one place to another. The Lawyer's Song is a celebration of this profession, an exploration of the lawyer as guide. Hugh Duvall, a seasoned courtroom veteran, explores the various aspects of this work, from the passion to the pain, from the peaks to the post-journey reflections. Fellow lawyers pondering why they entered the profession and young folks considering taking the plunge will find understanding within these pages. The Lawyer's Song: Explores the complexity of legal practice, breaking it down into twenty separate topics. Discusses each topic in an entertaining, dual format - first presenting a vignette following a frontier guide in 1842 Oregon Territory and then discussing the same topic as it relates to the present day practice of law. Reinvigorates the battle-fatigued lawyer. Explains the challenges lawyers, especially trial lawyers, face on a day-to-day basis: Adhering to their oaths, negotiating fees, accepting the weight of responsibility, enduring the pain of defeat and savoring the intense satisfaction of assisting the client in achieving his or her goals. The worn and weathered attorney will emerge from reading The Lawyer's Song with renewed understanding, strength and purpose - ready to plunge head-first back into raging legal waters. The Lawyer's Song splits open the profession and lays it bare. The young student considering life as an attorney will find his or her view of this work changed, in a number of ways less romanticized and in others, more so. The Lawyer's Song is a song to "sooth the soul, to lift the spirit and celebrate our noble profession. If you are such a soul, it is a song for you. If you are not, if you are of the uninitiated, then hear our song." - from the Preface"

You have heard about it in Pay It Forward, you've heard about it in Six Degrees of Separation , but no single author has given as much consideration to the laws of influence as King Duncan does here. This reader-friendly book looks at chaos theory--how small changes can trigger monumental transformations. The example of this theory most often cited is that of Edward Lorenz, who discovered in the 1960s that the tiniest movement in the air in one part of the world can produce dramatic changes in weather patterns months later in another part of the world. Thus, a butterfly flapping its wings in Malibu might set into motion a series of events that could produce a monsoon months later in Malaysia. The Law of Influence states that one life touches another and potentially both lives are changed; through this change, potentially the entire world is changed. Even chance events--a smile, a word spoken at just the right moment, or even people like John Howard, who helped a young English journalist return home. The young journalist was Winston Churchill, and the rest is history. More important than explaining what the law of influence is, this book explains how individuals can use it to create a life worth living, and to share the lessons to create families and communities that work together for the greater good. Together, people aware of and involved with their own influence on others have the potential to make amazing things happen. King Duncan is a professional speaker and author of two other books, Amazing Grace: Humor to Heal Mind, Soul, and Body , and The One-Minute Motivator . In 1993, he was the national winner of the International Platform Association's prestigious Speaker's Ladder Award. He lives in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he owns and manages his communications company, Seven Worlds Corporation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of providing public access to the law is a critical one for librarians. It has been over ten years since the last law librarianship textbook was published. Since that time, much has changed in the profession, and with the emergence of new technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing, law librarians must master legal materials and a thorough understanding of the latest technologies in order to best serve the public. Law Librarianship in the 21st Century, a text for library and information science courses on law librarianship, introduces students to the rapidly evolving world of law librarianship. With no prior knowledge of the law required, students using this book will find practical answers to such questions as: What is law librarianship? How do you become a law librarian? How does law librarianship interrelate with the legal world? Individual chapters provide a concise treatment of such specialized topics as the history of law librarianship, international law, and government documents. Standard topics are dealt with as they apply to the law library, including collection development, public services, technical processing, administration, technology, and consortia. The textbook also includes an explanation of the common acronyms and special terminology needed to work in a law library.

Book excerpt: Behind the scenes of the many artists and innovators flourishing beyond the bounds of intellectual property laws Intellectual property law, or IP law, is based on certain assumptions about creative behavior. The case for regulation assumes that creators have a fundamental legal right to prevent copying, and without this right they will under-invest in new work. But this premise fails to fully capture the reality of creative production. It ignores the range of powerful non-economic motivations that compel creativity, and it overlooks the capacity of creative industries for self-governance and innovative social and market responses to appropriation. This book reveals the on-the-ground practices of a range of creators and innovators. In doing so, it challenges intellectual property orthodoxy by showing that incentives for creative production often exist in the absence of, or in disregard for, formal legal protections. Instead, these communities rely on evolving social norms and market responses—sensitive to their particular cultural, competitive, and technological circumstances—to ensure creative incentives. From tattoo artists to medical researchers, Nigerian filmmakers to roller derby players, the communities illustrated in this book demonstrate that creativity can thrive without legal incentives, and perhaps more strikingly, that some creative communities prefer, and thrive, in environments defined by self-regulation rather than legal rules. Beyond their value as descriptions of specific industries and communities, the accounts collected here help to ground debates over IP policy in the empirical realities of the creative process. Their parallels and divergences also highlight the value of rules that are sensitive to the unique mix of conditions and motivations of particular industries and communities, rather than the monoculture of uniform regulation of the current IP system.
